I must admit, Cedar Fair ran Geauga Lake out, but why are the cities of aurora and bainbridge not getting any flack?
I thought that the attitude was generally "oh well" when it came to the parks closing, and there was a general feeling that the parks were a nuisance to many people.
There was no outcry or so it seemed from where i live(in twinsburg) that anyone in bainbridge/aurora tried to maintain or save the parks at any point. At the very least, it would seem that the city officials would have re-zoned the land for housing or have promises in place to do so?
I suppose they may be, but it seems everything is anti-Cedar Fair, and the communities are to blame as well. There seemed to be an attitude from the 2 cities that they didn't really get much $ from the park, so they didn't care whether it left or not. Plus since most hotels were in streetsboro, a lot of that tourist money was also outside of those cities.
I can't recall specifically, but it didn't seem like anyone really cared. I tend to think that with all of the relocating to the area, most residents probably didn't care about some "dinky little park" and didn't have all of the memories. |

I would LOVE to see pics of the old arcade...and fascination as well. I believe I've requested pics of them before. Wish I had taken some pics back then. |

Agreed... I'd love to see those... even ones of the pizza stand that used to be in the corner (now who's dating themselves?). _________________ Positions Held:

Actually, fascination was across from the arcade in the game section. The arcade had ski ball and then the pizza/popcorn stand was in there too. i think if you exited out the back of the arcade, you came to the 180 degree movie tent.
The arcade was a dump of a building actually, but it was awesome. |

Dump yeah but it was great working there the year I was in coin-op. We had a small merchandise cage in the back with a stack of olympic commemorative plates from some summer games in the 70's that we couldn't get rid of. If you had a bad day or a guest got to you, you went in the back and broke a couple plates and immediately felt better.
I remember there was one of those gypsy-grandma fortune teller coin-ops back there that I always wished I could have found a way to get out of the park. I wonder whatever happened to that old-timer. _________________ Positions Held:

Anybody know what's been inside the aquarium building for the last 4 years? What's going to happen to it now? It's curious that CF didn't tear it down like everything else over there when they took away the animals and started talking about PHASE II. I wonder if maybe the tanks are still there. Hell maybe some of the fish are still in there!!!! |

The old aquarium building still has some of the tanks inside but is basically a mess at this point and not worth salvaging. |

Plain Dealer (in addition to a longer Big Dipper article) has some updates on the Geauga Lake land:
http://www.cleveland.com/business/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/business-7/121671555050620.xml&coll=2
The 11 acres including the hotel is under contract for sale to a non-profit organization (another nursing home or Anna Maria expansion? YMCA?) (All in Aurora)
Sale of the 440 acres including the land where the rides are/were is being negotiated with a buyer who wants to put in a housing development (anyone think it is not Glenwood Homes, whose trucks have been in and out of there for months?) (Most of the amusement park is in Bainbridge with a small chunk behind the Ballroom & Big Dipper turnaround in Aurora; plus additional parcels outside of the park in both Aurora and Bainbridge)
Sale of the 100 acres at the west edge (Geauga Lake parking lot and adjacent areas closest to the existing commercial areas) is being negotiated with a buyer who would put in a "retail complex." (All in Bainbridge) _________________ "It's a very special ride. We want to make sure it has a proper home." Cedar Fair's Innes on Big Dipper, 12th oldest roller coaster on Earth.

What about that huge stadium? I can't really consider WWK a waterpark when there's still buildings standing from sea world =/ _________________ 1888-2007

One thing I have been pondering since the conference call is PJ's reference to one of the land bids involving a "joint venture." That is news (although CF mentioned joint ventures as a possibility in the land brochure, this is the first indication that one of the 3 bidders actually wants to do that).
What piece could it be?
From past reports, the hotel parcel is under contract with a non-profit. Don't see Cedar Fair entering a joint venture with a non-profit agency.
That leaves the 400 acres being considered for a residential housing development or the 100 acres in the vicinity of the GL parking lot that will be used for a retail complex (and the PD article made that one sound like an outright sale).
So is Cedar Fair getting into the housing business or the shopping mall business? Would either choice be a good one given their debt levels and today's economy? Housing seems the most likely given what we know, why the heck would Cedar Fair be considering a joint venture to build housing in Aurora?
PJ does not make it sound like anything with respect to those 2 parcels is a done deal, and we know how negotiations with Cedar Fair can go from the situation out in Calfornia. All the more reason to leave at least the Ballroom, Palace Theater and Big Dipper standing, for now.
Conference call transcript from Seeking Alpha:

Hayley Wolff - Rochdale Research
"Can we get any information on the Geauga Lake sale?"
Peter J. Crage
"We had a few interested parties on various parcels, three different parcels of land, hotel, 100 acres, another 400 acre parcel, so we continue to talk with them. It's a soft market as you know. We'll talk with those three parties and discussions will continue to see if something makes sense. One's an outright purchase; another one is a joint venture, so we'll just see what happens." _________________ "It's a very special ride. We want to make sure it has a proper home."
