I know that the info smacks in the face of people who loved the park- but I'm certain that CF has a committee that made a decision that the land was best marketable as a empty lot; sad as that sounds. |
The land was marketed as being "cleared".
The land wasn't cleared before because of the auction.
I'm sure if a buyer wanted something to stay that wasn't sold, it would have to be a real sweet deal for CF to go along with it.
CF is going to get every penny, anyway they can from GL.
The bids have been submitted and are being "reviewed".
If they can't come to terms with one of the bidders on the property that's they only reason they would have to "market" the property an further. But considering they extended the bid time frame out two months, I don't see them getting to much more interest on the property. _________________ Money, power, fame: the roots of evil, and others heartache. |

I think those will soon sleep in our memory.
What I am thinking should be preserved, for now, is some of the historic stuff like the Ballroom (dates to the 50s) and the Palace Theater (old Funhouse, dates to late 40s), maybe even a few of the newer structurally sound buildings like Beachcombers restaurant.
If the residential deal goes through there is time to clear that. If it doesn't, having that there might make that area more marketable to non-residential uses -- put in anything other than houses, and it can be used to market to some of the millions who went through there over the past 120 years. Nostalgia sells.
Putting in houses in the area where the Big Dipper sits does not really make sense to me. It is very close to a major state highway, across the street from a commercial area, parts of which date back to the 1960s or earlier, and adjacent to a fishing dock. I can't imagine someone wanting their luxury housing there. And if you want a lake view, there are a lot of those around in more tranquil areas. _________________ "It's a very special ride. Had I won the lottery prior to the auction what you just proposed was almost exactly what I'd planned to buy.
Ballroom for museum, Beachcomber's as a working seafood restaurant, and appropriate land for parking and a couple exterior features for the museum.
If it was a large enough lottery I'd buy front-midway to keep BD intact as well as the boardwalk (and Wharf) to build a Legacy Village type complex.
Oh wait, that basic plan was already under proposal. Guess no money would have been enough to save even a piece of history. _________________ Positions Held:

Was at the park today. you can't help but look across the lake. I could see a back hoe, (?) (not up on the names of this equipment), the claw digging in front of Grizzly Run.
Don't know if this was a while ago, but I just notice it being real wide open in that area, it looked to me that the stage and stores along that stretch have been demo'd, could see the arcade building still standing. It's getting harder and harder, with buildings being wiped out daily, to be able to tell whats missing compared to whats left.
The ride side was a very busy place today beside the backhoe, there were trucks small and big going back and forth every time I looked. _________________ Money, power, fame: the roots of evil, and others heartache. |

Being that Cedar Fair is planning on holding on to the land, is their still a rush to level the rest of the park. Probably! |

Well I wonder if that hold will effect demolition...I mean they do have to pay the people.... What would be funny if they completely stopped demolition because they couldn't afford to continue because nobody would buy the property so it wouldn't pay off. It really wouldn't suprise me. _________________ Geauga Lake I will miss you! |

Took a ride past GL. The main gate, space needle, Dipper, and RWB are the only things really standing. Most of the shops are being gutted out with backhoes. debris everywhere and about most of the concrete pillars from Thunderhawk and Dominator are gone. Seems like they are ripping it apart like it didnt even mean anything. Someone mentioned that it looks like a tornado ripped through the park. _________________ 1888-2007

Another shock to myself, I drove around the backside of GL on Saturday late afternoon, the maint. buildings are gone, erased, history.
I wasn't ready for that.
Friday, we were at the waterpark, from the top of Liquid Lightening you could see trucks going back & forth all day. Seems to be a pretty busy place. I'm sure they want to get it all gone asap, so they don't have to worry about any security. Don't look for any sec. for whats left when what can be demo'd is finished. _________________ Money, power, fame: the roots of evil, and others heartache. |

You are correct-no need for security for vacant land. If you leave anything standing, it attracts the vandals, next you know you got a fire (Con. Lake, Idora, etc..) last thing CP needs at this point is a fire and someone gets hurt or killed-see how fast they get sued when some little rich kid gets hurt goofing around in a deserted park. If the BD doesn't get moved ASAP I really see something bad happening to it-it won't survive being left there. |

I agree with that oldfuzzster, I too fear for BD if it stands there too long. Even if a fire never happens it could become very weathered in no time. Or am I off with the weathered? How long could it stand and hold up to the elements? Without maintenance that is...... |

My feelings on whether BD is saved or not.
To me, it no longer matters. It's in my memory and my kids memories, the rest becomes legend over time.
This mystery buyer issue is just junk. _________________ >>>>>Feuer FREI<<<<<<

Yes, its time to move on. Moving the Big Dipper to me isn't a big deal.
I'd say donate the cars and maybe some track to the historical society as well as may of the signage and be done with it. (oddly, i think that they should have done this with many of the rides instead of selling them for scrap, i.e. double loop, a dodgem car, some others). Ideally, they should have put a small GL Tribute barn at Cedar Point, although i'm guessing they don't have room anymore given all the coasters)
Anway, the best thing is to move on as riding the Big Dipper anywhere else wouldn't be the same.
Also, the fact that CF did get rid of Geauga Lake, and to the average person, quickly and as part of a plan, rather then selling a shell of the park to continue operating, is really just business.
And thus, after it is all said and done, hating the management does nothing except prevent us from enjoying some good times. I can go to any park and pick apart all the bad things, but you gotta enjoy life.
Heck, WWK isn't great, but its close by and my 2 and 4 year olds love it, so hopefully i can run over there next year( i did refuse to go this year). _________________ Sea World Operations back in da day |

the park may be gone but at least I hope someone saves the dipper. its a great coaster and if its moved it wont be exactly the same BUT, it will still be The Dipper. look at some of the great old coasters that have been saved and moved. they are getting great revues in their new homes. |
