Here is some great news.....

Century Village Receives Part of Geauga Lake’s Raging Wolf Bobs Roller Coaster Burton, OH, August 18, 2008:

In 1988, as part of its centennial celebration, Geauga Lake Amusement Park unveiled the Raging Wolf Bobs roller coaster.  At a cost of $2,000,000, this wooden coaster was 3,506 feet long, and reached a height of 80 feet above ground.  With the cars obtaining speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, the ride took all of 2 harrowing minutes to complete.  It ceased operations in June of 2007 shortly before Geauga Lake Amusement Park closed its doors forever.

The current Raging Wold Bobs owner always loved the Raging Wolf Bobs coaster.  When he obtained the coaster after the auction held at Geauga Lake in June 2008,  he was eager to find a way to have at least some part of it saved for future generations to see.  He contacted the Geauga County Historical Society and thus began a partnership to save a part of the coaster.

Last Friday, August 15, his efforts paid off, when, with the donated help of ARMS Trucking and Ronyak Paving Company, both of Burton, OH, a 16-foot long by 9-foot wide by 5-foot high section of  the coaster track was delivered to the Historical Society’s Century Village in Burton.  The chassis of an original coaster car manufactured by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company was also delivered.  The car will need renovation and the Society is seeking donations for this purpose.

The Historical Society was recently given the building that housed the Haybaler ride at Geauga Lake and is developing plans to reconstruct this building at Century Village to house a welcome center, museum store,  exhibit hall, offices and storage for the museum’s 15,000 artifacts.  Also the Society hopes to develop a Geauga Lake Amusement Park exhibit in the Haybaler building over the next few years with Ray’s gift of the Raging Wolf Bobs track and car being centerpieces of the exhibit.  A funding plan is currently being developed.

Great job theparkb! Thank you for doing that, that will be a great thing to visit.

I hope this gets some coverage from the TV stations, Plain Dealer and Beacon Journal. So far WTAM and the local papers have them scooped on the Geauga County Historical Society developments.

Hopefully the funding will come together. As a Society rep said in a recent article, with the Hay Baler barn, pieces of the Raging Wolf Bobs and also Geauga Dog & Shamu already in Burton,  "this is a for real project."

The WKYC article states that they purchased the Palace theater. From what I recall they only purchased some of the contents. Does anyone know if they also are moving the theater?

No, just some of it's contents. Chalk that up to more bad reporting.

The Aurora Advocate made the same mistake, the GCHS bought the contents of the Palace Theater. They plan to recreate the marque and saved some of the interior fixtures, but as far as I know (unless there has been a dramatic recent change) the wood is so old and has enough dry rot that, considering the funding issues, they were not able to relocate the entire Theater. Sure seems that it would be more feasible to maintain it on site if CF would be willing to let a future owner do that. It might not be a good candidate for relocation but it sure seemed to be doing fine where it was.

The loss of the Palace Theater will be a sad day. One of my most vivid memories of my first visit was the old distorted mirrors in there back when it was the old Fun House. Dating back to at least the late 40s it is one of the oldest structures up there.

The Geauga County Historical Society is moving ahead with their plans for the Haybaler building. They had hoped to have the exterior shell up by now but are still working on raising the money to re-erect it and install an interior. For now the building has been carefully covered for the winter. Even so, things are definitely moving ahead.

As someone from the Society said, "this is a for real project." They are continuing to gather Geauga Lake items and have some good drawings of what the building exterior and interior will look like. A large part of the first floor will be a Geauga Lake display area, plus a separate display gallery, reception area/coffee shop, some offices, and museum store. A new second floor will be used as storage for their artifacts. The back door of the building will open directly into Century Village while the front will face the main parking lot.

The exhibits will include the donated Raging Wolf Bobs track, Raging Wolf Bobs cars, a Haybaler car, and a recreated Palace Theater area (including the marque, curtains, steps that led up to the stage and show props) as well as Geauga Dog and Shamu and other items.

They are collecting things like maps, if anyone has extras they may be able to use them.

I give the Society a lot of credit for quickly raising the money to get the building top Burton last summer. I also give Colleen Murphy and others at Cedar Fair credit for cooperating with the local historical societies. I'm glad they did that, and still hope that in the future we will be able to give Cedar Fair credit for the preservation of the Big Dipper as well.

In the first part of 2009, there will likely be a campaign to raise additional funds. There may even be fund raisers that some of us could volunteer at. So keep your ears open and look forward to having a piece of Geauga Lake to visit in the future.

That is cool about the updates with that! I hope that something good will come out of all the lastest things and maybe a happy ending will come for the Big Dipper at least! I know I just posted about the news for Conneaut Lake park. I will Cedar Fair would decide to maybe take part of the property and turn into a mini Geauga Lake of something! I know that I miss Geauga Lake already andit has only been a year! I am glad that we still have Cedarpoint and Kings Island. I do love my Ohio parks!
