GOOD TO BE HOME AGAIN

I don't know about you but after going to Kings Island last week, my first sight of the Skyscraper and Head Spin as I approached the park seemed like I was coming home again.  While it's always good to get away once in a while there's no place like home.

As you approach the north gate you are greeted by the annual Oktoberfest display that seems to make its presence known around this time of year.  It's hard to believe that the event will be IN JUST 5 WEEKS!  That is, of course, the final operating weekend of the 2007 season.

The park was quite busy today as two companies held their picnics.  Thunderhawk was only running one train, the blue train, which I thought was odd for being a Saturday but everything else was rather light, except for Dominator.

Dominator's line actually used the first set of switchbacks in the queue line, which I haven't seen or waited in since the Six Flags days. When you think about it we may gripe about some of the things the park has done this season but let's look at where the park was back in 2004 compared to this year and there is no doubt that the park has come a long way.  Is it completely back to what it was before?  No but it has made great strides this year and I really hope Dick Kinzel is seeing the results of Mr. Spehn's hard work out in Aurora.  It's been a slow go but I think we're seeing the Cedar Fair era finally coming to fruition.

Of course Wildwater Kingdom was obscenely crowded today.  The lines for Thunder Falls body slides were all the way down the steps and then some, the second time this year I've seen that. Even Riptide Run had a line of guests just waiting for an innertube. Liquid Lightning's line snaked down the stairs and around to the gate next to Splash Landing. For me I can't see how it can be fun when you can barely walk around the water park.

I decided to try Aunt Em's today and ordered a turkey sub. While it's no Subway, it really was pretty decent for what you get. However the crew there was horrible. Why were there like five people working there yet only one was taking orders and manning the cash register?  Seemed like some of them were too busy gabbing with each other instead of attending to the line that formed behind me. One girl actually came out to the one who took my order and complained that she rang up my order without logging her out.  My thoughts were "Why weren't you attending the cash register?" and "Why don't we all get our act together here?"

This is why the employees of the park need to watch what they say and do because there are folks like me who may be the eyes and ears of the park watching you and you don't even know it. So far the Aunt Em's crew were the worst crew I've encountered this year.

I was thinking...would the park really be crowded at all if it werent for these weekend company picnics.  It seems that every weekend there is at least one, if not more, company event going on.  I guess as long as there are people it doesn't matter but I was just wondering, is there still a large enough amount of general public there also?

Very good question, geaugafairJT. However with today's picnics they all had their distinctive shirts on so it was rather easy to pick out who was with a company outing and who was the GP.

There was also at least one church outing but those aren't large enough to make the park crowded.

The main thing is that all these people, even if they are company outings, do help in the overall attendance figures.  Since there have been more outings this year than in the past three, the numbers have to be very good compared to where they've been.

that last statement you made gunkey is what i was going to say. the more groups the better because those groups really help attendence and make the park money.

Thats very true.  Groups are very good.  Thanks for answering my question Gunkey.  After reading your trip report, I really have the feeling that we will be seeing more to WWK next year.

With company picnics, that brings in revenue, and also kind of like a reminder that they should be coming back to the lake... Wink

I went to GL today too, only went to go swimming.  Arrived at 11 and got a seat by Tidal Wave, not too busy then. Then it got busier and busier. I've been to the waterpark about 4 times this summer and everytime it's been busy, guess I choose the company picnic days! A few weeks ago I stopped to eat at Aunt Em's and ordered the chicken ceasar wrap-it was surprisingly delicious! The staff was a little blank, I encounter this often at the food places=blank stares, no smiles, they are like robots. This reminds me of an encounter I had last year while waiting for my cotton candy. The 2 girls behind the counter there were SO rude they were even swearing and having a non-family friendly conversation. Who trains the associates there? I work in customer service and seeing how these people treat the customers is sad. Ok im done venting!

Actually, Group outings are a HUGE part of Geauga Lakes attendence back in the 80's-90's. Just like Kennywood, the park needs to have so many outings each year to survive.

Welcome aboard, Embers23.  No problem with the venting as that's one of the reasons these boards are here.

I see you had some similar experiences as to what I had dealt with at Aunt Em's yesterday. I guess with the season winding down and schools getting ready to get back in session the park will start having slim pickings when it comes to employees.  I know that is no excuse since this is a service oriented industry.

I mean the people who pump gas are nicer than that. Aunt Em' better be a little more picky.

I went to Geauga Lake on Friday last week August 10th, The only complaint I have about WWK is how warm the water is at Riptide Run and Tidal Wave Bay. Are they putting Bathwater in those two rides? Why was it so hot? Other than that a great trip.
