Thank to everyone who showed up at the meet at BW3's on Saturday, it was nice to finally meet some of you. As we discussed with that group, on Saturday, April 25t we are planning a Town Hall meeting to celebrate the 1925 Big Dipper's unique place in Cleveland history as the 12th oldest roller coaster in the world! Enjoy presentations, guest speakers, park memorabilia, videos and photographs.

Download a flyer HERE and place them wherever you can.

After we left the meeting, we stopped at the Mc Donalds across the street and dropped a flyer to them. They said they would be happy to post it and spread the word! I will work on my connections to spread the word! I also talked to my dad on the way home and he would like to come. He is going look through his pictures and slides and see what he can find on Geauga Lake! I will also talk to my friend next week and see what I can come up with! HAve a great weekend guys!

Is this event intended to criticize Cedar Fair or the auction Big Dipper buyer?

No!

This event is not intended to criticize in any way Cedar Fair or the unknown individual who bought the Big Dipper at the June 2008 auction. Rather, it is meant to be a positive event that both celebrates Geauga Lake’s 120 year history as an amusement park and asks whether there is any way that future development of the park land could preserve some of remnants of that history.

Why Worry about a Roller Coaster When the Economy Is So Bad?

This event is about much more than a roller coaster.  It is about putting something on the vacant land around the Big Dipper that will create local jobs, bring customers to local businesses and generate taxes for the communities by incorporating some of the rich history of Geauga Lake.

If You Want to Save the Big Dipper, Why Didn't You Buy It (or Take It For Free)?

Very respectfully, that is the wrong question here (although I do applaud the unknown auction buyer who did purchase the Big Dipper).

This event seeks to promote the possibility that the Big Dipper will be preserved on site at Geauga Lake with some other aspects of the park's history (perhaps including the Ballroom and historic 1926 Marcus Illions hand-carved Carousel).

In fact, a plan to keep the Big Dipper on site was submitted to Cedar Fair before the deadline for bids on the Geauga Lake land in late May 2008, according to published press reports, by an unnamed developer who later withdrew that bid only after Cedar Fair auctioned the Big Dipper separately on June 17, 2008. It is possible that someone else could make a similar proposal in the future.

The time has come to explore options for keeping the Big Dipper at Geauga Lake.

The Big Dipper is located on the edge of the property, on a narrow strip of land bordered by a state highway, a fishing dock and the lake. A big part of the potential value of that land is its history. Millions who visited Geauga Lake park over the years might be enticed to return to a scaled down, local attraction that incorporates some of that history. This would not compete with Cedar Point in any way or draw Sea World-levels of traffic, but has the potential to be a vibrant part of the local community.

I hope that Cedar Fair will consider leaving some aspects of Geauga lake park's history intact. Maybe Cedar Fair, the unnamed auction buyer, the local communities and other interested parties can work together to find a way to preserve the Big Dipper at Geauga Lake as part of future development there.

The Big Dipper is an important part of Geauga Lake's past, it can be part of its future as well.

Why Is the Big Dipper Historic?

At the end of Geauga Lake's final season in 2007, the Big Dipper was the 12th oldest operating roller coaster in the world, the 7th oldest in the United States and the oldest in Ohio. The Big Dipper is also historic because it is one of the last built by John Miller, a prolific inventor whose innovations are still used on roller coasters being constructed today. Although John Miller designed hundreds of roller coasters, only a handful remain.

When Geauga Lake's rides were auctioned in June 2008, the Big Dipper was purchased at the auction by an anonymous buyer, but no plans have been announced to date.

For more information see http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-58599 (although I think this article is perhaps too skeptical of the unnamed Big Dipper buyer and his or her agent, it has some good information and links).

Stopped on the way home at Step Right Up in Hudson.  The owner sounded very interested and took a pair of flyers.  He asked if this was any new news, and I said that it was more of an information sharing and nostalgia type event.

Also:  Doughnuts are dozen for half-dozen price after 4 PM.  SOOO GOOOD!

Getting the Word Out

It is great to see places already being open to hanging up the flyer.

Anything people can do to get this flyer up will be greatly appreciated, particularly in places like libraries, stores, restaurants/bars, bowling alleys, gymns, community centers, maybe college campuses, museums, public places with a lot of traffic  -- and any other palces you can hang one. Hit the link above, print as many as you like.

Also, if people could circulate it online (NE Ohio community sites, Myspace, Facebook, Coaster/Amusement park sites), that would be great.

And please personally invite people who had an interest in Geauga Lake. This will be a neat event that celebrates the history but also hopes for the future. Why not preserve and build around some of Geauga Lake's past?

ChadV brings up an important point -- this is an event to both celebrate the history and discuss how some of that history (like Big Dipper, Carousel, the Ballroom) could be incorporated into the future development at Geauga Lake.

By the way, "Step Right Up Hot Dogs and Donuts" is on Route 91 on the southern outskirts of Hudson and is owned by August Lococo, son of Gaspar Lococo of Geauga Lake's Funtime. The place is decorated with some really neat Geauga Lake memorabilia including old signs, Fun House mirrors and photos:

Will this event only be a meet and great?

It will be much more than that. As mentioned earlier it will be a positive event that both celebrates Geauga Lake's 120 year history as an amusement park and asks whether there is any way that future development of the park land could preserve some of remnants of that history. We will be shareing our remembrances of the park through memorabilia, videos, and pictures. There will also be presentations by guest speakers to be named at a later date. And of course lastly a time to share your history for Geauga Lake and Big Dipper to others who care as much as we do.

Also, if you have any memorobilia that you would like to display please contact us at geaugalaketoday@hotmail.com
