Oh yeah, I remember those.  This is where Cedar Fair is dropping the ball.  They could make one hell of a Haunted park with the way it looks now, and I bet people would turn out in droves.

I was asking for those photo's, but some are missing, like the one where it shows him standing on top of double loop just before he tear's it down and another whole shot of double loop from top the lift hill! Wish john Peck would put those up on site.

Thanks for link kidcoaster.

Hi. I'm new here. Just would like to ask..... I worked maint, until Summer of 79. I heard that the Labor Unions came in later. If this is true, would this be a reason GL went belly up? Bob Seitz

I don't know if maintenance was different or if the year-rounders were or if the live entertainment managed to get Equity membership but I can tell you, working from late 80's to mid 90's in multiple departments there was never any unions at the park I knew of, no talk of organizing, no vote cards...

I worked a lot of ancilliary groups so maybe we were out of the loop but I never heard anything about unions at the park.

But no... as much as I hate unions (and I do) labor unions had nothing to do with closing the park.  There was a couple companies that didn't realize what the park was and why it was successful under FunTime, tried to change it, didn't work so they sold it (over and over again) until finally they dragged it down enough and managed to sell it to someone so cash strapped that they had to take a crappy offer for some liquid capital.  Sadly, the company that had that capital was a company that wanted little more than to rape it for a couple rides, dig it into the ground, then close it in a way that no other park has ever been closed before.

This is one time we can't blame trade unions (if they were there at all)... this was just poor management, bad business models, and a final company that wanted nothing more than to destroy a landmark.

Thanks 4 your reply. I came to GL from CP in 1971 to work in maint, and as I stated left in 79. I had a good time working at GL. Man! Do I have some great memories while doing so. Looking at photos of the park as it is today in decay & abandoned, looking like a war zone makes me sad indeed.

I remember those! Even though i was a year ago, it is still so sad to see them ripping the rides apart like that! At least the trains from the rides are still going on other rides!
