I have always had a bit of an odd obsession with queue lines, and I have been wondering about some of Geauga Lake's queues (or lack thereof) for some time. Specifically, it seems that most of the major coasters, with the exception of Villain and BD, had either a few switchbacks or simply a path leading directly to the entrance. So, my question is, does anyone know why there is such a lack of queue space? Did they originally have larger queues that were removed over time, or were they always like that? I am especially curious about Dominator and Thunderhawk. Both of their queues seemed awfully small for such major rides, especially when compared to the queues of other rides at major parks.
So, any help with this would be appreciated.
Wow, that was odd, wasn't it? _________________ Save the Dipper! |

Every coaster at GL that I can think of has or had a large que area. The two you mentioned both had very large que areas. Dominators switchbacks were to the left of the entrance, as I recall when they were full it took nearly 1.5 hrs to get through. Thunderhawk also had very large ques right before the ramp leading to the station. I recall when TH opened (Serial Thriller) all switchback ques were full and the line spilled all the way on to the midway. _________________ GL's demise was caused by one mans foolish greed.

Double Loop had a pretty long queue area too. |

I seem to remember Corkscrew had a fair-sized queue on the ground, but the station (like Double Loop) was up almost 2nd Story level, and from the stairs on up to the per-car queues was just single-file. |

Coasterdad, now that I think about it, I guess that you're right. To me, the area next to the cobra roll looked so small and narrow, like it couldn't hold very many people. And perspective wise (bing maps), it looks very small compared to Raptor's queue. But I do remember those 1.5 hour days, so... _________________ Save the Dipper! |

Batman's queue area was narrow but they were able to squeeze two sections of queue lines in there. I remember waiting in that area but at least you were treated to seeing the train in action.
Villain and Superman had the largest queues followed by Mind Eraser/Head Spin, Double Loop, Raging Wolf Bobs, and Big Dipper. Only once had I seen Superman's queue filled all the way back to the ride entrance (2000). After that it was just a waste of space and annoying to go through since there was no direct path to the section below ground level.
Kind of strange, in a way, that they didn't install switchbacks for Double Loop back in the day but that entrance queue was quite long (but nowhere near the length of Darien Lake's Viper queue, which can almost be an attraction by itself - lol) _________________ On September 21, 2007, a historic 119-year old amusement park had been secretly murdered. The Double Loop queue was the original from its inception back in 1977. Ride operators always knew it was time to add a second train when the line got to the point of the queue guest covering where the track heads into the brake run.
I can recall days back in the 80's when the line for the Double Loop, even with 2 trains running, could reach out on to the midway when the park was packed on weekends with company picnics, family reunions, etc. With 2 trains on the Loop capacity was near 1200 ppl an hour. The longest I ever saw the Corkscrew queue line was out to the entrance, down along the fence heading towards Euro-Racers, U turn along that railing and heading down the midway to the Matterhorn..we asked guests how long they had waited and it was around 45 minutes! I always worked hard on those days to fill every empty seat possible to see if we could set a record hourly total. The only park I see make that kind of an effort still is CP, otherwise most ride operators don't seem to care anymore.
Makes me wonder where all those folks are going now, we know it isn't WWK and it sure isn't CP. How do a million+ people simple "vanish"????? |

I rember during the Funtime ownership of the park how all the employees seem to have a good adituded. This is something that I never got a Cedar Point. During the ownership of Taft Kings Island had cheerfull employees. I am not sure amout when Paramount own them. I donot know why anyone would want to work for CF. Lets save the BD where it is now. CF want no reminder of Geauga Lake. |

I remember in the 80's the wait for the DOuble Loop and the Corkscrew! Even the Monorail all the time I spent on the stairs waiting. The line I remember the most was the Log ride. I loved looking through the holes and picking at the paint! When I was at the auction, I took pictures of the log Ride, plus the hole and the paint! At first, my family thought I was crazy, but Now they know why and think it neat! _________________ Life is like a rollercoaster. It is full of ups and downs! |
