With the recent news and photos showing Skyscraper coming down I felt it was time to finally finish the GLT's auction coverage.

http://www.geaugalaketoday.com/A_Final_Goodbye_Pg5.htm

This set of photos begin at Beachcombers and winds through Turtle Beach, Hurricane Harbor, 50's Midway, and back to the front entrance. There are also a few bonus photos from Grizzly Run included that I forgot to add when I first put this section together as well as a few that I felt like adding.

It is not my intent to re-ignite any harsh feelings against the ones responsible for the death of our park but more like bring some quiet reflection of what was and what could have been.

Thanks for sharing those Gunkey.

You and Coasterdad continue to do a great job of documenting the park's history online and keeping us up to date on current events like the Skyscraper deconstruction that the media just isn't covering.

It is sad how much Geauga Lake which was a large part of many lives in this area have forgotten it already!

It's not that they've forgotten, they just don't care anymore and that seems to be the general attitude nowadays.

Like the old 80's song, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. I think Bainbridge and Aurora are finally realizing that.

Aurora, Bainbridge, Solon, Streetsboro, Twinsburg, Kent and other surrounding communities absolutely have to be feeling the impact from the closure of this major attraction area.  I know for fact the hotels that were built to support all the tourism have suffered immensely and are trying to find ways to compensate.  Aurora Farms outlet mall is tanking (funny, part of the reason is AGAIN all the zoning and anti-business policies Aurora has enacted against the Farms).  Restaurants are suffering.  Gas stations are suffering.  Local merchant stores are suffering as are local produce stands and other novelties people did as part-time jobs during the summer tourism season.

The FIRST big mistake was not supporting the parks over the past several decades.  The SECOND big mistake was allowing Sea World to leave Northeast Ohio and not intervening in some capacity.  The THIRD big mistake was never allowing the widening of SR 43 for all those decades the parks begged to make traffic flow less congestive (what is the point now after all the tourism is gone?!?!).  The LAST big mistake was allowing Cedar Fair to close the park.

I challenge these communities to do the RIGHT THING and maintain the zoning only to allow some sort of other attraction management company to take over the property and return it to a strictly for-profit leisure entertainment venue.  It can be done.

ScrewCrew I totally agree. Maintining the zoning will be important if there is ever to be another attraction on the site again.

I remember YEARS ago when I was in middle school (Mid to late 80's) all my frieinds joked on how Geauga Lake was nothing compared to Kings and Cedar... to the point where I believed them, but still enjoyed my visits anyway.

GL never was an exceptional park, just a "nice" park, but it still brings up great memories of my youth and my parents taking me.... my favorite Geauga Lake years was when I was a young kid and my dad would take me on what I would call the "Big Kids rides" (Trabant, Spider, Skyride)

So sad.
