That site sucks...I hope a similar story is run in another paper where you don't keep reading the same page when you click "next page."
I'm glad I haven't felt SoB's wrath. My brother survived it, with some bruised knees though. _________________ I don't like a certain company so everything they do MUST be wrong, even if it's right. And that makes me look like a bigger fool.

Until someone gets killed or permanently disabled they wont. I rode it in its second year and after I got my spine realigned I refuse to ride that SOB ever again. It needs to be removed but that costs more than the upkeep and ride count status I would imagine. _________________ GL's demise was caused by one mans foolish greed.

I have ridden Son of Beast. Not with the loop, wish I did, but I didn't think it was so horrible that I couldn't ride again. That, was Mean Streak.
I wish the back of those of trains were up a little higher then where they sit now. They sat right below my shoulder blades and I kept getting hit by the back of the train.
If they let it run full tilt, it wouldn't jerk so much. Unfortunately, it runs 80+mph and it will shake. It's what happens when you run a coaster that fast. _________________ Katie |

I used to LOVE SoB. I rode for the first time in 2002 and was blown away. Rode again in 2005. Every bit as awesome. Rode it back in May... it sucked. The Gerstlauer trains were NOT built for this ride (although being honest, neither were the originals) and the lack of the loop was a bigger disappointment than I thought it would be.
And like Radius mentioned, it is a shame that America's Premier Authority on Roller Coasters, Amusement Parks, ROI, Business Practices, Music, Employment, Video Games, Women, and basically everything else wasn't quoted. Although if he was, I'm sure it would go something like this:
"My fellow theme park insiders and I did not enjoy Son Of Beast. Therefore thousands of other schmucks that visit my website also do not like it because as we all know, what I say goes."
Yes, I'm sure that is exactly what would be said.
I sure love digging my grave deeper by the day... _________________ http://rayp.smugmug.com |

Swapping the Premier trains for the G-Trains improved the ride quite a bit in my book, but the lack of padding of both kept the ride awful. I prefered the reprofile over the original, though... the loop was okay, but I don't miss it.
Well, Son of Beast merchandise (from what I read) is 75% off now... Get it while you can, and get your last pictures of that PR nightmare they call a coaster.... it should be gone by January. |

Sounds to me like SOB is getting The Bat treatment. Ive ridden SOB 5 or 6 times and NEVER had a decent ride. One ride was so brutal I couldn't walk after riding it. I cant imagine the pain that the G trains must inflict on the riders. This is one ride that will not be missed by me. Maybe they can get a two for one deal and remove MS at CP at the same time.

^ What essentially made the G-Trains feel better was the fact that your riding position was improved so you weren't squished into the train and the lap-bar wasn't big and bulky like it was in the old premier trains where it hit your stomach and chest.
So basically, the G-Trains made things much better, but in the end it's the rosebowl design that just kills the ride speed, comfort and enjoyment.
What I would do to greatly improve the ride within a reasonable cost-factor is to remove the rosebowl all-together, add an out and back layout with a high turnaround and low to the ground return that meets back up with the block break, so they can keep all hardware and the same trains.
However, with all the bad press this thing has gotten, the smartest move is to just pull it down, which is what they will do from how it looks.
Maybe 2011 will feature a nice full-circuit B&M Inverted in it's place. |

I would have to agree with your statement there. Remember riding it for the first time this year since the loop was removed and the "new" g-trains were put on. The ride was fine until you get to the rose bowl area, then it just beats the heck out of you. Might be able to save it if the redesign it or reprofile it, but I think SoB has turned its last laps. _________________ "What we do in life, echoes in eternity."

SoB's trains were actually decent when the ride first opened; they just modified them by the second year by raising the floor and making it quite uncomfortable. Seat 6-2 was my money seat. That was the only place I would ride since it wasn't on a wheel and it gave a rather decent ride.
I rode it right after the Gersts were put on. A slight improvement as far as you weren't squeezed into the trains but after the newer trains were put on and fully broken in it was still a bit brutal in the rose bowl.
Without the loop the ride really is nothing special however I will admit that the first drop is among my favorites on a wood coaster.
Bring on a the B&M invert, John. That is my number one wish for Kings Island. _________________ On September 21, 2007, a historic 119-year old amusement park had been secretly murdered. Never forget it. |
