Kennywood Amusement Park Announces
Launch Roller Coaster as New Ride for 2010!
West Mifflin, PA – Kennywood is proud to announce the addition of a
seventh roller coaster for the 2010 season! Joining the ranks of the Lil’ Phantom, Exterminator, Jack Rabbit, Racer, Thunderbolt, and Phantom’s Revenge, the new Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) launch roller coaster, designed and built by Premier Rides in Maryland, is unlike any other roller coaster at Kennywood.
“This roller coaster will provide a thrilling new experience for coaster lovers at Kennywood,” explains General Manager Jerome Gibas. “The use of LSM launch technology will allow riders to blast from 0 to 50mph in three seconds and offers our first roller coaster with inversions since the Steel Phantom.”
Kennywood’s new launch coaster will feature many exciting and unique features including three
inversions and a 0-50mph launch in three seconds! After the high-speed launch, riders will experience a vertical ascent to 95ft before a brief cliffhanger pause at the top and a 90-degree drop into a maximum G-force pullout. The riders then enjoy extended airtime as the train races into an inverted top hat element, passes into a barrel roll and goes vertical again through a twist up leading to another pause.
Riders experience a second vertical free fall followed by another maximum G-force pullout on the way into a highly banked fan curve. After a traditional corkscrew, a curve to a zero gravity hill, and a series of wave turns, riders finally return to the station.
The new roller coaster will be placed in the current location of the Turnpike, a ride that has been at
Kennywood since 1966. Guests will only have to say ‘see you later’ to the Turnpike since plans are
already underway to bring back the ride in the near future.
The project is expected to be complete in May of 2010. Official coaster name and logo information
will be released in the coming weeks. Click Here for a preview video and updates.
Ride Statistics:
Track Length: 2100 feet
Maximum Speed: 50 mph
Ride Time: 65 seconds
Number of Trains: 2
Number of Cars Per Train: 2
Number of Riders Per Train: 12 |

To me, this is a pretty un-Kennywood addition. They better not ruin the beautiful entrance midway. And with the mention of the Turnpike returning eventually, maybe the park is getting ready to do that expansion they've been wanting to do for years.
As for the ride itself, seems like it should pack a punch. But I think length might be a concern. I wonder if when you ride it that it will feel too short. |

Sigh. They are ruining a great area of the park for this steel monster. Does Kennywood hate all that's green???
If I were you I would head to CP next year instead for their new woodie. _________________ Cedar Point: The BEST amusement park on the planet for 12 years in a row!

If I were you, I would just take a walk into Lake Erie and never come back out.
I think the ride will be a hit. People have been saying when is Kennywood going to add another coaster, when are they going to ad another coaster. Lets just hope it doesn't have a lot of downtime like that 25 million dollar short ride up at CP. _________________ "What we do in life, echoes in eternity."

Can you really comment on a park that you never been to? Besides there is no proof CP is getting a woodie next year, in fact there is no proof its even a coaster. _________________ Confidentiality is telling one person at a time.

Oooh!
So it's a mini version of Top Thrill that does more than just a single hill?
It actually looks pretty fun.
And is it just me, or is that the same announcer/editing team that did the Mind Eraser commercial for GL back in '96? |

A few thoughts...
VG, I agree. This addition is very un-Kennywood but at the same time they needed to start looking forward, if you know what I mean. I would have never expected a launch coaster in West Mifflin but maybe a Ravine Flyer-esque type wood coaster using the terrain.
Interesting that they went with Premier. It's great to see something come from them since they don't add new rides very often (the last being Italian Job/Backlot Stunt Coaster at KI). Trains will be short like Italian Job so the line will be loooong.
I think it's great that they plan on bringing back the Turnpike in the future but this is going to be horrible being right at the front of the park. The line's going to stretch all the way back through the tunnel and entrance ramp on those very busy days. _________________ On September 21, 2007, a historic 119-year old amusement park had been secretly murdered. I doubt they'll run the queue through the tunnel, and there is room further down that direction... Maybe this is the start of expanding behind Garfield and Turnpike/Unnamed Launch Coaster. |

I think this is going to be an excellent addition to the park. Although some people have questioned the placement of the coaster right in front of the park, I think the setup of the queue lines are going to be designed in a way to prevent overcrowding of the entrance area. Also, they may have to remove a lot of trees to add all the footings but I see them adding new ones and hopefully keeping some existing ones as well. You have to admit though with PR and Palace in the picture, the park's going to change, and hopefully for the better. |

KW just blew away anything that CP can come up with for 2010. Way to go KW, too bad CP will be losing more guests to KW again in 2010. _________________ GL's demise was caused by one mans foolish greed.

I like this trend of building smaller, twistier steel coasters (Crossbow, Maverick, Wicked). I'm looking forward to hearing more about it. Lets hope they can get away from using OTSR's on it.
Surprised about it going in the Turnpike's spot.. thought it was going where Log Jammer is.
I wonder if they will play off the old "Laser Loop" name as far as branding. |

Does Kennywood get over 3 million visitors a year? Don't think so.
Whatever Kennywood is building will definetly not blow away CP's new woodie. I will bet you a million dollars CP's new ride will give more rides than this new ride Kennywood is building.

Having 3 million guests per year (and falling) is not an indication a park is great. This new addition makes KW a much better value than CP. Any one of KW's woodies blows away any of CP's current woodies, and I don't think the new one (if they get it) will change that. Sorry Parker, CP is losing and you just cant take it. _________________ GL's demise was caused by one mans foolish greed.

You're so wrong Coasterdad.
How in the world is Kennywood better value than CP? Kennywood charges $10 less than CP and has less than half of the coasters CP has, less the amount of rides, shows, restaurants, a beach, and is a way smaller park. All that for $10 more. If anything, Kennywood is bad value.
CP is not falling. After Halloweekends they will be back to normal.
While, not sure what CP is getting, I bet it will be great. "Whyte Lightning" is the expected name and that sounds great. The big announcement for the new woodie will be coming very soon! We will just have to wait and see as to what ride looks better.
Blue Streak at CP is also an awesome coaster. Historic and gives a great ride. _________________ Cedar Point: The BEST amusement park on the planet for 12 years in a row!
