This is a good thing but I would have thought the Big Dipper would have been recognized long before those other coasters were.

Anyways, neither here not there. I'm glad for the acknowledgement.

So 2010 marks the Big Dipper's 85th birthday.  One can only hope she'll have more than just a birthday to celebrate.  But this certainly is a milestone.  I just hope CF doesn't get all the praise for this distinction.

^ I agree probably if possible Cedar Fair can reopen Big Dipper for its 85th anniversary and keep it running from 2010 and beyond?  hopefully, this designation may shine a brighter light into GL's future.

Long time no talk... been lazy about visiting the forums. I'm glad to see Big Dipper finally got its ACE Recognition as a Landmark. Lets just hope that maybe someday we will all be able to see it living or even be able to ride it again someday!

Welcome back! It is good to see Big Dipper recognized, there is more and more interest in it as time passes. This story is not going away.

Great opportunity there for the Big Dipper owner and Cedar Fair (as owner of the land) to make money, build good will that will make money in the future, and put an end to all the negativity by saving it.

Sorry guys, as much as this is cool, it isn't going to mean squat whether this coaster runs again or not.

It does mean something. It shows that people in a large national group recognize what a great ride it is. Alot of people love this ride and the park it still sits in!!

I don't reckon it could hurt though.

Here is another story that ran today:
http://www.hudsonhubtimes.com/news/article/4707713

It is easier to tear down than to do something constructive. I give credit to those who worked to build recognition for something that is important to them and the community.

Another excellent article from the Youngstown Vindicator.
http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/nov/11/coaster-gets-special-designation/?newswatch

This story is not going away, even if the ride goes away.

It is not just an Internet thing, there is a lot of anger out there among the general public about the closing.

The owner says he wants to preserve it. Cedar Fair as owner of the land has some say on that outcome. They have had little to no good Geauga Lake PR since the closing, this seems like a good opportunity to win back some hearts and minds.

Overheard in the Cedar Fair board room….

Dickie K: “Hey Billy, why is that Giant Dipper roller coaster still standing on the Cleveland property?  Didn’t we sell that relic two years ago?”

Sweaty Bill: (quickly trying to finish the third of his four Wendy’s Triples) “Actually we did Mr. K.  Some mysterious fellow bought it.”

Dickie K: “Then why hasn’t it been removed?  I have had plenty of offers for that land but have turned them all down since they haven’t been anywhere near what I am expecting to get.  And remember, what I say goes.”

Sweaty Bill: (now working on a 15-piece bucket of KFC Extra Crispy Chicken) “Ain’t that the truth Mr. K?  I guess the owner is trying to rile up the folks over at some insignificant website devoted to the old Cleveland property.  He says that if people keep saying bad things about us that he will tear the coaster down.  It’s sort of a ransom thing.  I’m not sure if you knew this or not, but there were around 30 people that actually cared that you closed the park.  I still think that was a work of genius Mr. K!”

Dickie K: “Of course it was Billy.  Everything I do is a work of genius.  There isn’t a man alive that is smarter than me.”

Sweaty Bill: (now nearly finished with a 16-cut deluxe deep-dish pizza) “Yes, sir Mr. K.  Anyway, what do you think we should do about the Dipper?  A bunch of people fatter than me just declared it a Historic Coaster.”

Dickie K: “Hmmmm…. (strokes his chin several times)  Actually, I think we’ll just leave it where it is for now.  Get a hold of this owner fellow and have him rile up the folks at that website some more.  I hear they have said some pretty harsh things about me and we all know that it is completely unfounded.  That coaster will continue to stand and fool those 30 people on that website into believing that there is still hope that it will open again one day.  That ride will never run again as long as I’m in charge.  Ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa (lightning and thunder strike in the background) Ah ha ha ha haaaaaa!”

Sweaty Bill: (who is now enjoying a large serving of biscuits and sausage gravy) “You’re the best, Mr. K!”

Ray, that was pure genius. I predict getting a message to delete that post because the news media feeds off this stuff.

Actually its not too far from the truth, although Bill has cut back and he is down to Wendy's doubles, an 8 piece bucket and a personal pan pizza. Keep up the good work guys, people in Sandusky watch this site like a hawk.

The positive feedback CF would get from letting The Big Dipper run again is astounding, Richard being the stubborn person he is will never say he made a mistake.

You know, I just love taking pot shots at the tools in the Sandusky offices, but I can't help but think that a lot of ill will could be undone by making a decision to re-open the Big Dipper.  It's great to see there is still interest as we were all told repeatedly (and in a rather factual way) by the owner of PopWorld, LLC and his @ssKissers that "no one cares anymore".  Apparently, a few people that don't visit this website actually do care.

Personally, I would never go back to ride the Dipper... mostly out of spite.  But I would think that many other folks from the area would be happy to see it run once again.  The only way I'd be caught on the former Six Flags Ohio grounds is if a new park rose from the ashes.  Since I think hell freezing over is more likely, I'll always have my memories of the park and its classic wooden coaster.
