They also would have the Swinging Gyms at Portage County Randolph Fair in the old days. I remember my sister, two of my cousins and I getting into one cage and we actually got one to go over the top!  It took an 8 year old (me) my 9 year old cousin, my 10 year old sister and her 12 year old sister to do it, but we did it!

Does anyone know what happened to the Rocket Ships that were removed in 1995?  I've seen a few websites calim that they are still sitting in storage at Geauga Lake.  From what I have learned, these rocket ships were the originals of Euclid Beach Park.  I'd hate to find out that they were scrapped or tossed aside.

Bluestreak81 welcome to GLT.

I had already answered this in anopther post but since it is relevent here I will repost it.

GL and EB had totally separate Rocket Ship Rides. EB's were quite large and built in house, GL's were pre-built by a manufacturer, I forget who. Two of EB's cars are still in operation today. They were converted to be drivable on the street (a 60's or 70's Toranado drive train) and are used in parades and other special events. They are in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst area so I see them all the time and have taken many rides in them.

GL's Rocket Ships were stored behind RWB in 95 until they were moved to make room for the path. The tower was still sitting in the junk (to right of Villain's lift hill) yard last I saw. The Rocket Ships cars were all there and one last made an appearance at The Haunt in 2004.

I am sure they are scrap now that they are in the hands of CF memorabilia destroyers.

My 6 year old daughter went on her first grownup roller coaster this summer at geauga lake, it was also her first steel one, and first time going upsidedown, and first time going backwards. We took this pic of her afterwards.

and then she got to drive a car

then we stopped for a pic with charlie brown

then she went on haybailers all by herself

while mom and little brother took a break

then i took both kids on a pirate ship ride

i still havent told the children that we wont be able to go on the rides ar geauga lake next summer, anybody have any ideas about how to do it, they are only 6 and 4 and understand business decisions even less then i do.

When I was little in the late eighties I was afraid of roller coasters. I graduated from kiddie rides to the Muzik Express, The Scrambler, The Octopus, and The Rotor. Anyone else know the legend of Rotor Man? I remember being so scared to go on the Corkscrew and Double Loop, but then I liked them after all and rode them again. I remember nearly flying out of the Big Dipper more than once. I really loved going on the Rocket Ships and would beg my mother to take me, even though everyone else in my family was bored on them. I loved the Turtle...I have to go somewhere and experience the adult-sized tumble bug before it's too late (Kennywood, I think?) I remember an airplane movie in the cinema 180. I remember when there was a boat that would take people out on the lake, and wanting to ride on it, but we never could because it cost extra. I spent a GREAT DEAL of time at Geauga Lake as a child (both my parents worked there); the way it was in the late eighties and early nineties is sharply impressed on my memory, and it's so painful to accept that it's all gone forever now. I have to take it in small doses. When I was little, I didn't even know or care what Cedar Point was. It was just Geauga Lake for me, and I loved it more than anyplace in the world. I can still conjure the ghost of that feeling, when we would come up the back way and Geauga Lake would come into sight and my four year old self would be ready to pee my pants with excitement and anticipation. So bittersweet, it feels like a part of me is gone too.

I have to start off by saying that I have been visiting Geauga Lake since the early 70's. First with my family as a young kid and then more so with friends as I got older and able to go by myself. I have so many memories of Geauga Lake and when I read through this thread I just had to register and respond. I recall almost everything that has been posted in this thread. My favorite memories of Geauga Lake have to be in the late 70's and early 80's and I have quite a few favorite rides but my all time favorite has to be the Big Dipper! I have ridden that thing so many times and it never got old. I sure HOPE something happens and the Big Dipper is saved... It sure would be nice to see it operating again in its original location. I have numerous comments about the many rides throughout the years and will mention a few here and leave the rest for future postings. The recent comments on the Swinging Gym/Cages were a nice suprise because I had myself forgotten about those being at GL. I don't recall going on those myself but do remember walking on by them and watching people trying to get those things over the top. It was nice to see some of the older pictures of them. Another big favorite ride of mine was the Rock-O-Planes which was a ferris wheel of sorts but you sat in a cage and were able to spin yourself round and round. The Rocket Ship ride was right next to the Rock-O-Plane ride also and can remember watching those all the time when waiting in line. One vivid memory I have of the Rocket Ships was when they were starting up and ending the ride the cables would always rub around the circular platform above you and when I was little I was worried about the cables breaking from that. Whew! it sure is nice to recall so many memories from years past. Fortunately we have GeaugaLakeToday.com!!!! With so much info and very well put together. CoasterDad's Time Machine is priceless and put so many thoughts into my head of when I was a child having so much fun at Geauga Lake. Thanks to everyone that has contributed and for the wealth of information I have read about things through this forum...

Ok here are a few questions I have about the old park =D

First, how does/did Grizzly Run work? I was curious as to how the currents were produced, how the water was pumped from the Reservoir all the way up to the top of the ride and yeah, I think you get the idea. If anyone does know or at least has any hunches let me know; this intrigued me the most.

Lastly, for the old wave pool (when Geauga Lake was actually still Geauga Lake), how was the wave created (I'm big into how things work ok Rolling Eyes). That and I remember as a kid going to the park and thinking the wave was actually a monstrosity. Now I was a kid then so yeah, everything was big but what was the actual size of the wave produced, I'm sure my mind makes the memories seen completely different size wise (I used to believe the Dodge Ram my grandfather had was a beast of its own ok).

Now thats all I can think of as of now but I'm sure as time goes by I will raise more questions without a doubt. Thanks to anyone who has the answers for me or at least a guess as to the answers. Until next time...

I have been to the park once. I went back in 2006. It was ok, just not my cup of tea. We got there at like 11 and were ready to leave by 4. There we NO lines at all and it was a Saturday! The longest I waited was for the flume and that was maybe 20 minutes. When I left I knew the place wasn't going to last much longer.

Both worked with machines

the wave was created by pushing water down. GR ran by channel. and rushing water.

for all of you sexy people who live near GL, (im about a quarter mile behind the seaworld side) do you remember listening to the seals bark at night? its weird how they were somehow the loudest things in the whole park. i could hear them clearly from my backyard.

i went to geauga lake every summer until sea world was gone. when they changed it to six flags. i had this bitter anger that since they changed the name it wouldnt be the same. Alot has changed since what i remember as a child. I loved Rainbow island. my favorite ride was the Turtle ride. i wish i could find more pictures of that. i also remember the Wave. i was never really in it cause i cant swim. but i remember watching it and hearing the screaming. i remember when i got older i was kicked out of butch's hightide playpark because i was to big. i loved the little kid water rides though. On the log ride my dad's hat flew off. on the skyglide my dads sandle fell off. i miss the monorail. i miss the silver flying bullets. A guy that owns one lives near where my mom lives i see him driving it down the streets sometimes. i remember that ride being close to the edge of the street made it kinda scary. i remember them playing the beach boys music in butch's play park. i would love to find more photos of the wave, rainbow island, or butch's play park. in the early 90's i went to geauga lake with a friend and used one of there audio music recording booths. it was Ace of base "the sign" song.. and they played it throughout the park. lol. my whole 7th grade took  a field trip to geauga lake in 1997. my mom says she remembers pushing me around in a stroller in geauga lake. its to sad my kids will never see it.  i feel like a part of my childhood is gone...i did go with my husband to geauga lake in 2006. i wish i could have gotten more pictures. that was the first time since the early 90's that i was there.
