Made another pilgrimage out to the park as the family wanted to see it.   Everything surprisingly again is still intact.  Saw the Big Dipper cars (one set of red, one of blue) sitting out back by the fence where the service buildings are.

Does anyone know if the clock tower and architecture for the front entrance sold at the auction? It was very pretty and I thought it should have been preserved as a memory of GL. How did you get to service buildings?

Can't wait to see who owns BD and what he plans to do with it! Lets hope it's good news not bad!

Depot Road runs behind the park where the service buildings are.

I have some info that is alittle confusing, but to what I see in this report is some hope for geauga lake....Check Here http://www.aceonline.org/AceNewsNow/?article=72

Could this Article mean that ACE has a bid on land still and is still waiting for cedar fair approval, also says in article that ACE and Cedar Fair are still looking at possibilities. What does that mean? And why is the Big Dipper still standing! Could ACE Still be talking about a deal with cedar fair to keep big dipper where it is!(CF can backdown on the bid still cause there always spurt of the moment on idea's)

Also,Note that ACE Posted this 6/21/08 Yesterday!

If Cedar Fair is serious, they have to do something quickly. The park (landscaping rocks, copper pipe, plumbing, shrubbery, salvageable bits of historic buildings) is rapidly disappearing.

This part from the ACE News Now article is interesting, but I see it as no more than a reflection of a belated attempt by Cedar Fair to do some damage control and act like they cared about the 12th oldest operating roller coaster on the planet:

"Cedar Fair does not have to accept the bid, and contacted President Mark Cole shortly after the auction. ACE and Cedar Fair are still looking at other possibilities."

Why did they contact ACE President Cole after the auction, when press reports indicated days before the auction that no one from the ACE leadership knew about the supposed offer?

If Cedar Fair was serious about considering such "other possibilities" they would have been in contact with ACE since the news broke in November about the Herschman plan (ACE was serving as adviser) that would have preserved Big Dipper on site.

They would have held the Big Dipper back from auction or sale (it has been up for sale & relocation since November) until after the bids on the land were decided.

Cedar Fair would have taken 10 minutes to compose a letter containing their alleged offer of the Big Dipper for free to ACE and other groups, and sent it to the leaders of those organizations (and none of them have said they ever received such an offer, in writing or verbally).

Saving the Big Dipper on site would not create an island in the midst of the new development.
It sits on a small corner of the property, adjacent to a community park with a fishing dock not controlled by Cedar Fair.  From published reports, at most the preservation plan would have involved 20 acres immediately around the Big Dipper, constituting a narrow strip between Route 43 (across which is a diverse commercial strip mostly dating at least to the 1960s) and the lake, about 4% of the total.  Yet from November through auction day June 17, 2008, Cedar Fair never acted like they would even consider it.  How will this small chunk be used by the future developer?

I hope this ACE News Now report reflects that something more is going on in Sandusky, but for now I see this as little more than Cedar Fair's attempt to limit the damage after it is (probably) too late to change the outcome.

I agree with you Skyglider and I also thought they sold BD to some guy that we don't know about, but would it be the first time Cedar Fair Lied or backed out of a deal. I didn't think so! We will all just have to be patient to see what goes down.

Oh, by the way. I drove to Geauga Lake today! Saw some big yellow square-shaped metal part being loaded onto a truck.Don't know what to make of it, maybe a motor or something! Everything else hasn't been touched, except for the fence by grizzly run is gone, as it looks to be tookin out soon.

sounds as if cedar fair may be feeling the heat.....just from a business standpoint, they cannot keep ticking off people from their largest drawing market, the Greater Cleveland area....im sure almost everyone who attends cedar point from the cleveland area has been to geauga lake at one time,,,we'll see what happens but it was a huge mistake to allow Big Dipper to be bid on at the auction...it muddies up the waters.....one more thing of note...back when Cedar Fair became a publicly traded company, im sure a very large percentage of people who bought into the stock were from cleveland, my sister and I being just two of them, at that time, Cedar Point i believe may have been their only park...the threat of stockholder bailout may be the best weapon to save Geauga Lake, or at least the dipper...i of course have already divested myself of the stock.

I'm hoping others will do the same...just because of the heat with the dipper.

What is going to happen to the rides that weren't sold at the auction? Will they be relocated to other parks in the CF chain? I speculate that CP will get the carousel, KI will get the ferris wheel, Mich will get Head Spin, VF will get El Darado, BLMR?? Dodgems?? Monster?? Antique Cars?? Tea Cups??

My guesses:

Carousel and Americana will go to Worlds of Fun.

Head Spin to Kings Dominion (to replace Hypersonic) or to Carowinds,

Antique Cars are probably being used or are parts for CP's cars.

Rumor has it that Beaver Land Mine Ride is going to France.

El Dorado to Valleyfair.

Gunkey, any thoughts on the destinations for Spider (Black Squid) or Tea Party?

Also, I wonder where the Dodgem cars went, some of them were in bad shape, but they were among the first things moved out.

I wish I still had certificates of the shares I held in Funtime, Inc.  I'm sure I could sell cancelled stock certificates on eBay for a TON!

While I would love to see ACE get a hold of the land and CF actually do something good for a change, they have made it quite clear they care about the bottom line, and have no more concern for the park nor the people that used to visit.
