I have received word that Norton Auctioneers has been hired to auction off what's left of Geauga Lake. The date is June 17 and 18.

I think this may be a great as well as last opportunity to go and get something to remember the park. |

| That makes me so upset! It is amazing how this park with its deep roots and history is being treated like this! |

Just so you guys know, I went to one of these Norton auctions out near Chicago when Santa's Village closed down and everything was auctioned off.
Anyone is invited to attend for like a $10 cover charge. You can walk the park and take in the last visit. However, if you want to bid on something, forget it unless you have alot of cash. They won't auction off single items in like the giftshops. It will all be a bundle bid.
But anyway, head out there on those dates to just walk the park and take pics. |

wow.. I'll be there..
As far as buying single items, like it was said above, they are usually hard to bid on, but in the past I've teamed up with the guy with all the cash and purchased the single item off of him after he bought the lot. The people that buy this stuff are usually just going to resell anyway. |

Here is some good information and 37 photographs of Norton's Williams Grove auction last September that give a good sense of what that auction was like:
http://whispers.smugmug.com/gallery/3501272_5ChLe#P-1-15
It sounds like most of the Williams Grove rides went to other parks with a few to collectors. $50,000 range for newer rides and $4,500 to $5,000 for older stuff similar to our Spider, Matterhorn and Scrambler. I hope ours find good homes.
At Williams Grove the wood coaster, dark ride and some waterslides were not included in the auction. I wonder if Big Dipper will be auctioned in June, the "entire park" description is pretty inclusive. _________________ Ohio and North America have few structures that rank as high as 12th oldest in the World. Well hopefully some of the PA parks (Kennywood, Waldameer, etc) will get some of the rides so we can still enjoy them. I know that Idora's Scrambler went to Del Grosso's and it is cool to go there and ride it again.
Also I wonder if the carousel will be included in the auction? I would guess that would bring close to a million dollars if not more. _________________ Cedar Fair is an ignorant company!

If it's anything like the Norton auction at Wyandot Lake in November 2006, there will probably be an Inspection date. I went to the inspection day at Wyandot and you could just walk freely around the park and take pics, with no cover charge and very little crowd. I basically had the place to myself, there were only 3-4 other people there. _________________ Donald

| ^^I do not think the carousel will be auctioned off. I think CF is planning on keeping it along with Americana and Head Spin. |

I'm glad that the auction date is set for June instead of April. With bids on the land due on May 23, there is at least a hope, however slight, that Cedar Fair will realize the money to be made by selling to someone who would preserve the Big Dipper on site.
Great PR, good press, unique attraction to bring potential WWK customers to the area, and a chunk of land sold in a slow real estate market. A historic park and coaster may well make the other land more attractive as well.
It will be interesting to see what is included in the brochure when it comes out, I heard they are typically released 30 days before the auction. _________________ Ohio and North America have few structures that rank as high as 12th oldest in the World. Remember the Big Dipper. |

I would love to see the Big Dipper stay on the land more than anyone, but if Cedar Fair is selling the land to developers who plan to put lakefront housing or businesses there, I just cant see it. I would think the noise and site of a roller coaster would devalue the property. I sincerely hope I am wrong, however. I read a post months ago about reopening the old waterpark with WWK and keeping the Big Dipper running with it. Personally I think thats an awesome idea given the circumstances, but I just dont see it.
As far as the auction, this sounds very much like what I heard was done at Six Flags Astroworld. That anyone could go, but unless you had mounds of cash, youll walk away with nothing.
Maybe this would be another good thread topic, but I am just curious if money were no object, and you could take something from Geauga Lake, what would it be? |
