I also heard stories that workers were told if the attendance goes up there will be something very special added to GL next year. Yeah something special alright.
I guess that "something special" was a reduced admission rate to the park on June 17th 2008. |

Raging Wolf Bobs Derailment
On June 16th, 2007, Raging Wolf Bobs suffered a derailment. There were no serious injuries, and the coaster sat idle for the rest of the season. ?It was only the 22nd day of the season, with 78 more days to go, yet no apparent attempt was made to get Raging Wolf Bobs repaired. ?It appears that management knew the ride side would be closing and money spent to repair the ride would be wasted. |
On that same day General manager Bill Spehn met with a group that attended Coaster EXT. When asked about GL's future he was very evasive. Spehn was also asked about Kennywood advertising and he denied they were doing it when in fact there were billboards all over the place. This all confirms rumor that park official were told to lie lie lie about any questions regarding the parks future. _________________ Greed is what caused GL's demise and that just makes me sick. Hey CoasterDAD, did anyone find out the reason why RWB wasn't running for the rest of the 2007 season, cause when I went to the auction I noticed that somebody ran into the fence which was crumpled up into part of the structure of RWB. Also, I watched this video ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4679506139556327917&q=geauga+lake+last+day&ei=sDRcSNz1Go-05 ALDvtDwDg&hl=en )which shows part of the RWB track cracked at the bottom. Maybe we can find some more dirt on CF that they could care less about the park, even before they closed it! Just makes me wonder if they was tearing up the park before they even closed it. _________________ (ACFG)Anti-Cedar Fair Group |

I am sure the reason that RWB never ran again was because they didn't want to spend any more money on it as they already knew the place was going to close. i am not sure exactly what happened but from what I understand the train did not make it up a hill and valleyed. When it did the last car derailed and ripped up some of the track. The person in the last car suffered some scratches. I kept this picture but now sure who took it otherwise I would give them credit.

Thanks for the info, coasterDAD. But, I still wonder if the accident was caused from a blow to the structure by an unknown object before derailment accured. As The Fence was smash pretty good when I saw it at the auction. _________________ (ACFG)Anti-Cedar Fair Group |

I agree with coasterdad. CF is well known for always having their rides up and running. And if there is some legitimate reason why a ride can't be up and running, they let the public know quite quickly. The fact that RWB mysteriously closed with over three months left in the season with no official statement from the park about it, and no work ever really done on it (that anyone saw), I'd say thats a tip-off they knew the park was closing and just didn't want to bother. The fact that they could then go on and auction it off indicates the problem wasn't that severe. _________________ www.ipetitions.com/petition/geaugalake

Does anyone know wether any attempt was made by cedar Fair to sell the park as is? even Six Flags had the good sense to sell it off rather than shut it down... and they are as money inept as any corporation has ever been.
It doesn't make sense that a park that was solvent for 119 years would suddenly be such a cash drain that it wasn't worth keeping open... especially when you just bought the darn thing three years earlier. It's like Art Modell not being able to make money with the CLEVELAND BROWNS. He moves the team, can't make money in Baltimore either... and had to SELL the team.
The problem was Cedar Fair, and will continue to be.
Hopefully there aren't too many other victims.
Sad. Stupid and sad. |

I'm sure some of the people here who are "in" the industry would know better, but if they did try to sell the park whole, it would've been without Dominator or Thunderchicken, as those were being disassembled within a week of closing. And with most of the kid's rides going to Cedar Point to re-do the kid's area up there, I don't know that there would've been anything other than the what was in the auction left. GL without the Big Dipper and that particular Illions carousel would not really be GL.
(And honestly, if there was nothing left on the GL property but the Big Dipper, Wolf Bobs or Villain, and the Illions Carousel, any parc [sic] company that wanted to could bring the rest back.) |

Congrats to Dick Kinzel, Cedar Fair, and the entire Board of Directors and major shareholders!
Today Cedar Fair's stock (NYSE: FUN) dipped to it's lowest point over the last 10 years. At the time of this posting it is trading in the low $17.00's (the last time it was this low was in 2005).
Just goes to show what an exceptional leadership group like Cedar Fair has available to avail themselves of can do with the right motivation and decision making skills.
Keep it up guys. Maybe FunTime can get back together and buy you out when your stocks are below $1 in a few years. _________________ Positions Held:

No, that wasn't an option. Lets say Dick had a lemonade stand and there were 100 people lined up to get his lemonade. Jane decides to open up a stand across the street and one of the persons goes over to Janes stand leaving Dick with 99. Believe it or not, Dick now has competition. In Dicks world that 25 cents means everything. So Dick buys Jane out and sends Bill over to operate Janes stand. He instructs Bill not to paint the stand, make the lemonade taste terrible and just flat out make things ugly. Now that Janes old stand is not doing well, Dick decides to close it and auction off all of it's contents while crushing the rest out of personal rage as I forgot to mention Jane was Dicks old girlfriend who left him for better ideas. Now Dick's in his glory as everyone will be comming to his stand. But wait, there's still alot of kids on Janes side of the street and they cannot cross because their scared or heard some bad things about Dick's lemonade. But that's ok, because 2 blocks down on the same side as Janes is another stand and the boy who operates it, his name I think, oh yea, Kenny Wood. Kenny does a fine job and attracts alot of Dicks customers and now Dick has to explain to his parents what to do with all that lemonade they bought. You can bet after this mess, Dicks parents will be kepping an eye on his next big adventures. Man, the people they let on this site. |

Obviously, this was the plan all along:
1 - Competition is gone as soon as Sea World, my great former employer, was destroyed.
2 - Why would the GM of a park that "failed" be moved to a sweet job at the Flagship park of the company if his job was to succeed at Geauga Lake. i'm not sure of names, etc.
3 - Halloween weekends were cancelled
4 - Route 43 looked like a garbage dump vs a fully operational amusement park based on all the crap rides they left there. the inside of the park also showed very little in the way of maintenance or improvements as you walked around either.
5 - Real Estate market crashed so a quick exit to maximize value was needed in case the fall continued, as it has. Therefore, Cedar Fair just to the F out. Granted, from a business perspective, they did what they had to do, not giving the park a farewell tour was horrible.
6 - Kennywood became a huge presence in NE Ohio 2 years ago, coinciding with Cedar fair. I can't imagine this is a coincidence. |

I still can't figure out the overall logic, though...
Geauga Lake, 600(ish) acres, close to CAK, CLE, etc. Was able to draw 3/4 of the crowd CP does, with 1/2 the coasters and less than 1/2 the overall ride count, plus Cute Aquatic Aminals.
Cedar Point, <400 acres, close to... Sandusky Airport? IS there a Sandusky Airport? Or is DET the closest? And isn't there some hullabaloo about Sandusky not being able to handle infrastructure demands from CP anyway?
Why would they see Geauga Lake as potential competition? I would've seen it as a better location than their current flagship, with more room to expand, marketed CP and GL together as being a combined trip, and started routing the heavier crowds to the more-suited-for-expansion GL.
Granted, then I wouldn't have wanted to go to GL anymore myself, but at least it still would be here. |
