. . . at the beginning Skyglider was asking people to chime in who had heard Bill Spehn lying about the park.  I believe I mentioned it in another thread last fall, but I am just such a person.

On the very last day the park was open, I ran into Spehn over by Dominator.  I asked him if the rumors were true that Dominator and Thunderhawk were being removed from the park (which was the extent of the predominant rumor I had then heard).  He repeated his (apparently) stock answer: that we shouldn't believe the rants of some teenage kid on the Internet.  And for that moment I bought it hook, line and sinker.

What makes it even more despicable is that my five year old daughter was with me.  So he lied to her too, a child.  Evil or Very Mad

Thanks for posting that.  That is at least three members, along with Starduster and Catchthebrassring, who report being misled about the park closing even in the final hours of Geauga Lake.  Also, if the General Manager and execs did not know Geauga Lake was closing, why did they make the effort to take the final ride on the Big Dipper on the last day of the 2007 season?

On page 4 of this thread (along with a lot of other great insights, hopefully SD will post more soon), Starduster wrote:

Starduster wrote:

. . . I spoke to Bill Spehn on CLOSING day. I asked him directly about what I was hearing (without any mention of where I had heard the information).
His answer was that it was a shame that a "RUMOR STARTED BY A 16 YEAR OLD KID ON THE INTERNET" was causing such a problem. The elimination of a few rides was just a move to "REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE FOOTPRINT" of the park. Research had showed that with the configuration of the park, the "FOOTPRINT" was too large.
(Now in MY mind this does not mean that the FOOT was going to be AMPUTATED and just leave the stump. I doubt that any other rational person would assume that either). When I returned to the subject of the rumors, I was told "DON'T BELIEVE THEM!" (SO, shouldn't I figure that the FOOT was safe?)

What angers my beyond rationality is that a park manager would be talking this way to me or anyone else. I TRUSTED HIM and he knew that. I actually backed him up and told him that I felt he was doing the best he could (under the circumstances that CF had given him; which were not particularly good). . . .

In response to amusementpark7 if you don't like our comments or attitude towards your beloved cf than why do you come here? Last time I looked it was a Geauga Lake forum.

The reason we criticize your beloved cf is because of the way they either mislead the public or out right lie to them. I was one of the people your wonderful bill sphen lied to about Geauga Lake's closing. If he hadn't come out and said the park wasn't closing I would of taken more photos of my kids on their favorite rides.

Anyone else have a similar story?

For the start of the 2007 and last season of GL Texas Twister is repainted a wild orange and red color scheme. When first seen it looked kind of odd and out of place, but hey at least they cared enough about the ride to repaint it.

For the 2008 season CF moved Texas Twister to California's Great America and renamed it Firefall. Oddly enough it sports the same orange adn red color scheme from its previous year at GL. Did CF simply repaint it at GL to save time then relocate it knowing full well that GL was going to close?

You be the judge.

^I was going to add that to the other topic about Firefall.

Also notice how Head Spin's paint job got put off. Well Cedar Fair seems like they don't want it...

I went to the www.geaugalake.com website and I clicked on the comments section and e-mailed Geauga Lake's WildWater Kingdom that I was disappointed with their closing of the amusement rides section of the park.  I finally got an answer back today.  It read:

"Thank you for sharing your comments concerning the new structure at Geauga Lake's WildWater Kingdom with us.  I am sorry you are displeased with the decision to eliminate the amusement rides from the park.  Cedar Fair felt that changing the park's structure was in the best interest for the park, the company and the shareholders.  Jennifer Anderson"

I e-mailed Ms. Anderson back and said that I can certainly understand why Cedar Fair felt that changing the park's structure was in the best interest of Cedar Fair.  I told her that they have lost three patrons since I was a paying patron of Geauga Lake, Cedar Point and King's Island and that I'll be at Kennywood instead of any Cedar Fair property.

Another typical canned response, when will they stand up to the public on this?

While I think changing the park's structure being in the best interest for the park, the company and the shareholders is all well and good. Maybe someone should have told the rest of the paying public before they made such a decision. Every other park that closed did. From what I understand CF was afraid of the backlash from the public if they told us ahead of time - they couldn't have been more wrong. But this wouldn't be the first time they've been wrong.

I think even now explaining the reasoning behind not giving prior notice of the closing could do CF some good - it was more than an irrational fear of unprecedented riots, I would bet.  Maybe it would make sense, even to some of us here.

Good post myriam, my family and I will also be at Kennywood and Idlewild and other non-CF locations this year.

And don't mind CFVIP, he's from Michigan.  'nuff said!  Wink

Actually you should be glad that I'll be at Kennywood.  I always drove a Suburban with two adults and six children to Geauga Lake, Cedar Point and Kings Island.  That means there will be eight less people standing in front of you.  I go to ride rides, not stand in lines.  I'll be thinking of all you people waiting in the lines at Cedar Point.  Let's see, I think on a good day, going in an hour early, we usually averaged eight or nine rides.  I'd rather spend the day at a quality park with good food, good rides, and average lines than being in an overpriced park with lousy food.  I remember driving through the parking lot during one particular Halloweekend looking for a parking space for nearly an hour.  The jerks didn't hesitate to take my $10 for parking and there were no parking spaces.  The only thing I'm upset about is that I didn't have a last time to go through Geauga Lake and take pictures.  By the way, this is a "GEAUGA LAKE TODAY" forum.

Right on to that!!! That is what people remember and like about GL.  Younger people only know CP and if they aren't going 100mph on a ride with their hair on fire they aren't impressed.

Well... Not all younger people...we went to Kennywood and I forgot that you are allowed to picnic inside the park, otherwise I probally would of. Oh well. I'm 21 and I'm not about going 100mph or waiting in those long lines...nostalgic parks make me feel better. It reminds me of Geauga Lake 90's era if not better. Plus, where can you find "the whip" these days its pretty uncommon, just another reason I like Kennywood and Idlewild's Rollo Coaster, a classic 1938 coaster built along the land...perfect out and back coaster. Smile

I agree. Ido like my coasters, but I love the feeling of being at Geauga Lake. Also I enjoyed Conneaut. I am a amusement park nut. I know I don't always want to be go 100 miles an hour. I like to feel relaxed when I am at a park. I know many people on the board loved Geauga Lake and Cedarpoint. I loved how different they were. To me the parks were like salt and pepper. THey complemented each other. I don't know that they had to take tha away from so many people who enjoyed a fine park. I know it has been said before, but as these smaller family parks get swallowed up, the choice goes away. Like when we shop. Now you have Walmart again.

In my talks with an ex-worker on Tuesday, he said attendance for 2007 had been 100,000 over the previous year.  Most people who were previous workers that I talked to seemed to have the same sentiment, they bought it to close it.

Since I was there almost every week of the 2007 season I can believe that figure. Also remember that this increase was done with an even shorter season that 2006! The ball was already set in motion to close it well before the 2007 season begun. I also heard stories that workers were told if the attendance goes up there will be something very special added to GL next year. Yeah something special alright.

One of these days the real numbers will appear and then everyone will k ow what a bunch of rotten bastards CF are.

I have no doubt in my mind that figure is accurate. When you go to the park every Saturday and have to park in Section A4 or in B3 or C1 (which is back towards the old graveyard) then you know those numbers had to be up.

Didn't the photos I took last season prove that the park had busy midways, busier than they had been in about three or four years?  Everyone who had been there and post in these forums will also attest the increase of guests in the park.

There were a few instances where Thunderhawk's queue would be full or near full.

I actually had to wait in the queue area before the steps on Dominator a few times.

I had to wait in line just to ride Head Spin a few times.

There was an energy in the park that had been missing for quite a while and the crowds for Oktoberfest were great last year.
