Getting back to the "original" feel of Kings Island, or any amusement park for that matter, does not mean you sit on your hands and do nothing with the park.  (Well maybe plant a couple trees, I guess)  Every business is always planning, building or expanding for the future.  Sometimes I feel that you guys would enjoy yourselves more in a history museum that an amusement park.

Another thing I don't know if you guys understand or just choose to ignore, Cedar Fair does not write up the press releases for its parks.  Catchthebrassring writes, "What a joke. I can't believe the nerve of cf to say that the theme of KI is history, tradition, and nostalgia, and that they are getting back to being a home grown park. Considering they just closed a home grown park with 119 years of history...I've never seen another company that can speak out of both sides of their mouth as well as cf."

I highly doubt that Cedar Fair had anything to do with the comments made by the Kings Island Public Relations Department.  Each park has its own marketing and public relations divisions.  There had never even been any corporate marketing.  At the end of 2006, Lee Alexakos was promoted to the newly-created position of Corporate VP- Marketing & Advertising.  I don't think she is too worried about the press releases and statements that are made by the individual parks.  I think she deals mostly with corporate strategy for marketing and deals with the advertisement (television) aspect heavily.  My point is, Cedar Fair closed Geauga Lake.  Cedar Fair is not talking about the theme of Kings Island this year.  That is Kings Island saying that.

Coasterdad discussed how the days of putting in multi-million dollar rides and attractions, and having attendance go up are over.  Well yes, in some degree they are.  I think attendance at Cedar Point will generally always be between 3 million- 3.5 million.  Cedar Point cannot expect attendance to go up 7% or 8% anymore like it used to.  But, attendance did go up about 2% this year, in response to Maverick.  And another interesting thing to note is how "worried" you all are that Cedar Point's attendance is going to plummet because of the supposed "backlash" of closing Geauga Lake.  Heck, when I was home for Fall Break from school in October (well after the closing of Geauga) Cedar Point was packed.  You couldn't even drive down Rt. 250 (Milan Rd.) because there were so many cars.  I guess every Saturday was just packed at the park.  Three Saturday's in a row in October, Cedar Point kept breaking attendance records.  The weather was great in September and October, but wouldn't those who were not going to go to Cedar Point because of Cedar Fair closing Geauga, not go regardless of how nice or bad the weather was?  If the closing skyrocketed attendance at Cedar Point immediately following the announcement, I have hard time believing the closing will negatively impact attendance at Cedar Point 8 months later.

If Cedar Point's attendance stays the same or decreases by a small margin this year, it definitely is not because of Geauga Lake.  It would be because of the lack of a major new attraction (and possibly economy could factor in).

I honestly don't think that the closing of GL will impact CP attendance in a positive or negative light. I believe CP attendance will suffer due to other factors a possibility being no new rides and economy as amusementpark7 stated. He also states that we will not see attendance increases in the 8% range as we once did, those days as I said are over and its not just CP.

GL was never competition for CP as a matter of fact I believe they complimented ease other. I believe more than anything GL was purchased because it was "perceived" to be a threat. I never said it was a threat, some old fart "perceived" it as being so.

Again the Halloween event of 07 is brought up as to how busy it was but its has nothing to do with the closing of GL. GL had not had a Halloween event for three years and you didn't see CP's post season attendance skyrocket then. As I recall weather was terrible in 05 and 06 on most weekends. Weather, especially in the post season event, has a huge impact on attendance. This past Halloween season the weather was unusually great and advertising was way up. This is why an increase was noticed this year.

By the way - amusemetnpark7. You stated in your first post that you started high school in 2002 which puts you around the age of 21/22. You also stated you are not a roller coaster/amusement park enthusiast. Not that a 22 year old cant know a lot about parks - its just seems odd that you know so much.

I do not think that the great attendance that Cedar Point experienced during Halloweekends was due to Geauga Lake's closing.  I did not intend for my last post to imply that.  Many, many of you have stated that you believe that Cedar Point's attendance will suffer terribly this summer because, according to many of you, a lot of people will choose not to go to Cedar Point because of their parent company's closing of Geauga Lake.  I was just pointing out that is not the case.  If this were the case, attendance would have suffered immediately after the announcement, not 8 months later.  Cedar Point's attendance may decrease this summer, but because of reasons coasterdad and myself have previously pointed out, NOT because of Geauga Lake.

By the way, when I first meet people on campus and tell them that I'm from Sandusky, all they want to talk about is Cedar Point.  One person I was talking to last week, who is from the Cleveland area, told me how he and many of his friends go to Cedar Point 5 or 6 times during the summer.  Because he seemed pretty interested in Cedar Point, I asked him how many times he went to Geagua Lake.  He said he had gone maybe twice in the last 5 years.  He knew that Geauga Lake was just going to be a waterpark this year, so I asked him if he knew that Cedar Fair owned Geauga Lake and he had never even heard of Cedar Fair.  So when I explained it to him, he had absolutely no idea that Cedar Point and Geauga Lake were owned by the same company.  I really think a small percentage of the general public, outside of people from Sandusky or amusement park enthusiasts, know that.

And, finally to coasterdad- I'm 20 years old.  Like I said, I'm from Sandusky but currently am at college.  There only reason I know a little bit about amusement parks is because of that fact, being from Sandusky.  Sandusky is a small town and Cedar Point/Cedar Fair is a pretty big deal, so whatever they do makes the "news."  And like I said before many of my neighbors, friends of my parents and parents of my very good friends are the full-timers over at Cedar Point and Cedar Fair.  I have also worked in the hotel industry and restaurant business for the past 8 summers, which is directly affected by Cedar Point's attendance.  But who knows, maybe I am a 50-year old amusement park enthusiast from PointBuzz impostor like you may think, or maybe even Mr. Kinzel himself!!!!!

Just curious, what part of Cleveland? I doubt he was from the Aurora area. I could see someone from the far western areas not being as aware of Geauga Lake, and being more likely to go to Cedar Point.

Cedar Point will probably gain some people who would have gone to Geauga Lake, while at least some will stay away because of the closing. Gas prices will play a big role as well, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.  Who knows?

Sustained bad PR cannot help, though.  Cedar Fair needs to take some steps to consider preserving at least some of Geauga Lake's history on site in Aurora/Bainbridge.

No it sure cant help, although the fate of GL as we know it and BD has been decided. Keep your eyes on the news and this site the next couple days and be prepared for a shock.

I got news...everyone will suffer from gas prices... I see everyone down from last year. In order for ANY PARK to survive the amusement industry will have to adjust to make it more affordable for people to visit. I highly doubt this change...but I guarantee you change is ahead for everyone!

I can't speak for the general public, but our family's planned trip to Kings Island, Geauga Lake, and Cedar Point in '08 was scrapped the minute I found out about the closure of GL's ride side.  Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, Beech Bend Park, and Lake Winnepesaukah are on the agenda now, and possibly a trip to Six Flags Georgia if we can work it in.
