Truest quote ever.

If CF simply stated this we might all be hurt but it would be easier to understand the senseless closing of GL. But instead they needed to lie, which is the sign of a very weak company or a very weak individual.

Again the great Ray P. writes a stellar post!  Having grown up with CP all my life I don't like the way it is now.  I can only count about four coasters out of seventeen that would I consider great (Maverick, MF, Magnum, and Raptor) even though one of the four I can't fit on anymore.

There are way too many great parks and rides out there not to miss regardless if they only have a small number of coasters and rides.

Hersheypark has a triple threat with two excellent wood coasters and a superior hydraulic launch. I'm sure Fahrenheit will be equally as delicious.

Knoebel's may only have two wood coasters but they are awesome just the same. You want good air time - check out Phoenix. Twister is a lateral lover's dream.

SFGAm has an equally impressive collection of thrillers for everyone.

BGE is the epitome of what I like in a park and they only have five coasters.

Because I have several parks that I rate much more highly than CP I guess I should be expecting some backlash.

First off, I'd like to say that Skyglider's first few posts in this thread were extremely informative and very well done.  Too bad the thread got off topic because it had such a great start.

Secondly, I'd like to add Seabreeze to the list of day-trip parks.  Located near Rochester, New York, it is a well kept, small traditional park with a classic woodie, a great spinning coaster, and (imo) the most beautiful carousel in the world.  Nice water slides and some other good rides round out a great little park.

Thirdly, I'd also like to add my agreement to Ray P.'s post (and the others).  Why does it have to be park vs. park?

Lakemont (Altoona, PA) 200 miles

Home of Leap the Dips (1902), the oldest operating wood roller coaster in the world. It is adjacent to the minor league Altoona Curve baseball stadium, a great place to catch a game. Some nice classic rides and a waterpark area.

It is also home of the Skyliner, a wood roller coaster relocated in 1987 from Roseland Park in Canandaigua, New York.

All Day Ride & Slide Pass $9.95
Evening Pass (After 5pm, Wed-Sat) (After 3pm, Sun) $7.95
Individual Tickets (Rides Require 2-3 Tickets) $1.00

Delgrosso's Amusement Park (Tipton, PA) 214 miles
http://www.delgrossos.com/dap.html
Like nearby Lakemont, a smaller traditional park with some great classic flats. (It used to be known as Bland's Amusement Park). There is a Crazy Mouse coaster and also a kiddie coaster, the Revolution (Arrow Loop & Corkscrew coaster) from the closed Libertyland park is onsite waiting for future reconstruction.

The owners are famous for their DelGrosso's spaghetti sauce, so the food is pretty good.

All days rides $12.95, Rides/Waterpark & Rapids is $15.95.

Columbus Zoo 141 miles
http://www.colszoo.org/
In addition to the animals in the zoo, it has the "Sea Dragon" Wyandot Lake coaster, some flats and the new Zoombezi Bay waterpark. ?The reopening is this year, so there should be a lot of buzz in the media. ?

(Anyone know what flats they kept from Wyandot Lake?)

Try to go to Del Grosso's on Wednesday. It's Pasta Wednesday night. You have your choice of spaghetti or the featured pasta of the week. People start lining up an hour before hand. Also even though its small they have some good slides in their waterpark. The raft ride in the center is great. Del Grosso's and Lakemont are close enough you can do both in one day. Plus Wednesday is also $3.00 day at Lakemont, you can ride & slide all day at the park for only $3.00, putt-putt golf is only $1.00 that day too.

Also even though it costs extra you should pay to ride the go-karts at both Del Grosso, and Lakemont. They don't have all the rules like the ones in Ohio. My son got yelled at when I spun him out and he was blocking traffic, I didn't get yelled at even though I bumped him. Del Grosso has a tricky hair spin turn coming right at the end of hill where if your not careful you have a big pile up. After riding both courses Ohio tracks are boring.

Coaster 3:16 is the one that introduced me to Seabreeze and it has fast become a favorite of mine.  It's another of those classic, well-kept little parks that caters to the family crowd.  Their spinning coaster is identical in design to Waldameer's but seems to spin far more than the Erie version.  They also have a log flume with a pretty steep drop, a quirky in-house steel coaster, good food, and as Jeff said, the most beautiful carousel I have ever seen.  Add in a "new" Bertazzon Musik Express for 2008 (was purchased from Wild West World), a gorgeous setting on the shores of Lake Ontario and bargain prices, and Seabreeze is a park that only those who hate small parks (and parks not named Cedar Point) will not enjoy.

And in reference to DelGrosso's, in my personal opinion, they have THE best park pizza anywhere.  Absolutely delicious.

Seabreeze was my first park. It has the Jack Rabbit coaster.
My first coaster, my fathers first coaster and my grandfathers first coaster. If you saw the park in the 1960's you would never thought that it would survive. A good plan and adding an occasional ride has proved that there is a market for a family park. The place really looks good now.

If anyone goes to Seabreeze you have to stop at one of the Hamburger stands below the park.  There are 3. I prefer "Vic and Irv's". All non-chain hamburger joints  in Rochester have a unique hot sauce. You can only get it in Rochester. Most are made with finely ground beef and spices. I have never found anything like it, and I have looked every time I travel. Just order a burger with hot sauce.
It is nothing like the chili used on chili dogs.
And.........  now I'm hungry.

As for the "Park" wars. I do not go to Cedar Fair parks anymore.
I like every park that I have ever been to, even Cedar Fair parks.
But, I can and will live without CF.

So this weekend it's off to Darien Lake.

Don't forget The Flying Turns should be opening soon and should be an awsome ride.
The kiddies have High Speed Thrill Coaster.
Phoenix, in my opinion, is the greatest wood coaster still standing that I have been on. A true PTC/ Herb Schmeck classic. Sit in seat 1/3 and you'll have a grin on you face for an hour.

Unfortunately due to the many floods Knoebel's has the flying turns was behind schedule. It looks like a cool ride, can't wait to go on it. Plus like I've said before Knoebel's has the best bumper cars.

I thought most of the delays in opening Flying Turns were due to unexpected design and construction issues with the track.  More recently, there have been problems with the trains.

I'd really like to try seabreeze out. I love little parks. I am not much for the typical huge park, long lines deal. Cedar Point is like that and it takes forever just to ride one ride.

Here is a recent article from Erie, Pa. with some good information on amusement parks in the area. Being the hometown park, Waldameer gets top billing.

It is about 110 miles of mostly highway driving from Aurora. If you live in or east of Chardon, Mentor, Willoughby, Newbury, Garrettsville, or in the Warren and Youngstown areas, it is the closest major amusement park, closer than Kennywood (except for Youngstown) or Sandusky.

http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080516/LIFESTYLES01/805160333/-1/LIFESTYLES

The new wood coaster Ravine Flyer II has been getting good previews  and opens today. This along with the recent closings of Geauga Lake, Conneaut Lake and Erieview should boost their revenues this year. If you go to Waldameer, remember they are closed on Mondays (except for Memorial Day and Labor Day).  Here is another article on Ravine Flyer II that also has links to video: http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080516/NEWS02/805160409

And not to worry, they also have some kind words and good information on some other fine parks in the region such as Kennywood, Darien Lake, Cedar Point, Martin's Pleasure Island and and Midway State Park in New York.

Midway State Park (151 miles from Aurora) at 4859 Route 430, Bemus Point, New York on Lake Chautauqua is an interesting example of a small historic trolley park that has survived in a new form.  The park opened in 1898. It is currently in its second season as a state park with a museum, an arcade, a Carousel, Tilt-a-Whirl, Dodgems, Bumper boats, go karts, mini-golf, over 10 kiddie rides, games and "a couple of modest [family/kiddie] coasters, including the Dragon."

A small park, and not one that competes with Waldameer or Darien Lake in any way, but one that preserves some interesting history. Nice that it worked out that way for that park.  (Likewise, a Geauga Lake museum, Big Dipper, 1930-40s Funhouse/Palace Theater and a handful of classic flats and kiddie rides would be a great way to preserve some of GL's history without posing any competition for Cedar Point and leaving them with the other 96% of the land to sell, can you imagine the great press Cedar Fair would get?)

According to the GoErie article linked above, it is "open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with a limited June schedule." "Ride-a-Rama tickets are $15, or $20 if you want to include water rides" with Kiddie Days on Wednesdays in July and August (20 tickets for $9).
