Amusementpark7 I really pegged you as being a lot smarter than the smartass comment you posted above. Boycott or not the main reason for this thread was to show people that there are other places to go than CP. I think we all know what CP has to offer without your ramblings that reads like it was written by the boneheads that are the CF PR department. I mean come on, who put you up to this?
So CP has 17 coasters, that’s great. How many are really worth the trip? Honestly, can you name more than four? Their resorts are so overpriced it’s a crime. Beaches are all over Ohio and most are free. The “Best Amusement Park in the World” honor is simply an opinion and a very poor one at that. I can think of several other parks who should have won that honor and none are CF parks.
So before anyone starts commenting or thinks they have smarter a** responses, don’t do it because it will get deleted.
EDIT: one post deleted (guess who), anyone want to try and be number two?
EDIT: that person is up to three deleted posts now. |
Yes, yes, amuesmentpark7 totally missed the boat on this one... BUT Cedar Point is as much a part of Ohio history as Geauga Lake was. Kings Island was "created" in total by a corporation. To denigrade CP as a whole is wrong... and there are many great coasters there... Dragster, MF, Magnum, Blue Streak, Maverick, Raptor, Mantis... all unique rides and worth the trip... but I digress...
I'm an hour and a half away from Kings Dominion, and am having trouble bringing myself to go there- because of the emotional sting of what happened to the park I grew up frequenting. Next weekend I'll drive right passed KD to get to Busch Gardens where my 5 year old will ride his first coaster. I was hoping that it would be on the Dipper... but... well...
I will go to Cedar Point this year... always have... every year since I was 7. (23 years and counting). Not going to CP won't bring GL back...
I do regret not having been to GL in three years... I would have loved one more ride on the Dipper... and the Villian (which I actually loved!).
Amuesmentpark7 may be a shill... but there is a point to be made there.
I guess I'm too emotionally twisted to make any sense here... |

Welcome to the boards in edan.
What you say makes sense, boycotting CF parks will never bring back GL thats for sure. What I am trying to say is that there are many other wonderful options in the area. I was at one time enamored by CP and its great coaster count. How in the world could there be a better park I thought. Then I sat back and realized CP wasn't really all that. I no longer need to stand in line for two hours to ride a coaster, even if it is a great ride. As an example I just got from five hours at Waldamer. In those five hours I rode 15 rides and had lunch! That would never happen at CP as most of that time would have been spent waiting in a friggen line!
While I may miss some of the rides at CP I don't need to line the pockets of a rich bastard that has no thought for any of the guests entering his park. All he sees are big fat dollar signs above their heads.
So until their is a major change of ownership (which I feel will happen sooner than later) I will never step foot into another CF park. I am not saying that everyone should or can, but step back and think about it, do you really need to go to CP? I think its obvious by this years attendance that many have already asked themselves that question. _________________ Greed is what caused GL's demise and that just makes me sick. Lets do what we can to rat out Kinzel - hes a snake.
In the end the truth will come out and we will then see whos laughing at who. |

I agree with CoasterDAD on this one, but I know I'm not the only one. Ask yourself this, Would you go to a park and want to pay almost 45 dollars a person to sit in line for 2-3 hour's or go to a park that costs about 32 per person and ride 10 rides in the same amount of time! Isn't going to an amusement park supposed to be fun or do you guy's love wasting money to sit in lines.Just think, Cedar point open's at 10:00 am - closes at 10:00 pm, thats 12 hour's right? Now, factor in 2 hour's in line per major ride. That's only 6 major rides in 12 hour's, That's out your freakin mind! Go to another park and ride 100 times more than that number! _________________ (ACFG)Anti-Cedar Fair Group |

| I know how everyone is feeling! I am really having a tough time this summer when it comes to the fact that no matter what park I choose to go to , from my house I have to drive 1.5 hours or more to ride any type of coasters! I also have been having trouble finding people willing to go with my boys and me! I know as this summer goes and the reality of the fact that Geauga Lake is turning into rumble makes the pain even worse. I do enjoy going to Waldameer, Cedarpoint, Kings Island, but I hate the drive especially when you have to do it alonelike me with your kids! I know in a couple weeks I am going to Kennywood with my family. I am looking forward to it, but I know where ever I go I won't have the same happy feeling I used to get when I would drive up 43 and see the Needle!! That feeling will stay with me in my heart always!!!! |

I do agree with coasterdad... that's why I'm driving passed Kings Dominion to reach Busch Gardens on Friday! I've been "informing" everyone here in the mid atlantic that "Dominator" is not a brand new coaster as it is being advertized, rather a representation of another piece of my home (northeast ohio) that has been destroyed.
I'll admit that I shed a tear when I read of Geauga Lake's demise... I don't think people realize what a great thing the Lake was! The concept of a small "family" amusement park got lost over the last ten years. This area (DC) is the prime example of that... a Six Flags park, a Cedar Fair park, and a Busch park. Hershey Park is about 3 hours away, Knobles Grove is about 5, and Kennywood is on my way home- I am absolutely stopping this summer.
But having a park that you could run to after getting home in the evening... as my dad used to do with me... and get in for a reduced price... just to have a heart clogging dinner and ride a quick coaster (or four) and maybe a log flume...
Parks like Geauga Lake used to be standard! Every city had one... but now they are gone. All that are left are the cookie cutter parks. All with that same Vekoma SLC, an 80's Arrow Looper, probably a Vekoma boomerang, and a pair of Bolliger and Malbiard creations...
If you are lucky there is an old fashioned woodie that will bounce you off your seats... (my prime regret about going to Busch Gardens... apparently they do not believe in wood).
I do feel that Cedar Fair made a HUGE error... as gas prices increase and people are feeling more of a crunch, a park like Geauga Lake could have been exactly what is needed to keep people heading out to the park.
It's not hard to see that the amusement industry is on the ropes...
big ride instilations are way down, attendence is down, quality of experience is way down (Six Flags is KILLING people!). Six Flags America is a horrible experience... every day is gang day!
Cedar Point itself has lost alot of it's charm over the years... Especially since "Top Thrill" was installed. It's begun to look like a six flags.
Hopefully Cedar Fair is broken up...
The company has lost it's way.
The bastardization of local icons will never breed success. I believe that is where six flags has gone wrong. A "Batman" at every park... the same experience at every park... only recently have they started getting creative with the GCI woodens again.
Ugh.
Overall, it is frustrating. Supporting parks like Kennywood and Knoebles is a GREAT idea, because no one wants to see CF or Six Flags buy them and make them crappy and so expensive that no one attends and then strip mine everything valuable and close them down.
...and of Kennywood... it is a unique experience for a coaster fan. Three absolutely classic woodies (including the US's only continuous track racer) and the Phantom's Revenge- wich is a great morgan reworking of an arrow disaster). And they have a tumble bug!
I'm sorry to ramble...
I've been stewing over this for months, and finding this fourm has kinda let me get it all out if you will! My wife is from Green Bay, and just doesn't understand why I'm so angry over this.
...and later this summer when I do end up at Cedar Point for the annual trip, I will be sporting a Geauga Lake shirt!
Thanks for having this site... and this board.
It is truly therapy.

| I know when my family went to King Dominion two weeks ago and we were going on the Dominator, we told everyon about where the Dominator was from! Is sad the CF puts people under the false idea that Dominator is brand new! I am hoping the people of King Dominion will enjoy the Dominator, but it still hurts alot that they tore it away from the people that the ride was originally was built for and that was for the park that is now in a rumble!!!!! |

Amen to everything you've said eden. I couldn't have said it better myself!
Please DO sport your Geauga Lake shirt while at CP this summer. And remember to speak your mind about what happened with the park, as well! I can almost guarantee that you will see Bill Spehn (former GM of Geauga Lake) walking around in his long sleeved shirt, tie, and sweat pouring off his face (he's a BIG guy!). Make sure you tell him how you feel...he's a bumbling idiot and CF has him brainwashed, but it's still fun to get him riled up a bit... |

All we can hope for is that when this corporate amusement park era is over (and it is quickly coming to an end) that there are some parks left. Just like anything else corporate, they grew too big too fast... always aquiring because they COULD without ever pondering wether they SHOULD.
I for one wish that they would have contemplated selling Geauga Lake whole (take their precious Dominator with them...). There had been an operating amusement park at that site for 117 years! It made it through the great depression... But Cedar Fair couldn't make it work?
It certainly seems that the decision to close GL was made years ago... when X Flight was removed... then Steel Venom... they were slowly softening up the park. Meanwhile both rides were placed in storage for years...
On another topic... I live in the DC metro, and the X Flight clone here at Six Flags America, Superman (there are 2 superman coasters... gotta love the imagination!) stalled in the loop and the train had to be evacuated. Six Flags has been generating some GREAT PR lately! At least no one was decapitated...
The amusement industry is in for some big time changes...
The next few years may be ugly! |

You are correct... it is Batwing...
The local fox channel's coverage recalled the accident involving Superman at Kentucky Kingdom last year.
My mistake.
The pictures they showed were of the stalled Vekoma flying dutchman...
...ahhhh... and at SF America Superman is the intamin hyper coaster next to it... it is slooooowly coming back to me now.
Last summer the same thing happened on Two Face... the suspended shuttle coaster... again train stalled in the loop.
Maybe some bad wheel bearings and poor maintanence? |

Welcome to the boards, eden. Glad that we can be some sort of outlet for you to share your thoughts.
I'm rather jealous that you live within driving distance of Busch Gardens - absolutely wonderful park. They may not have a wood coaster but everything else they have makes up for it. _________________ On September 21, 2007, a historic 119-year old amusement park had been secretly murdered. I honestly think that CF closed Geauga Lake, cause they knew that the economy was going to take a hit with gas prices and didn't want Cedar Point looking bad. Just look at all the parks suffering! Geauga Lake would have been the #1 park to go to this year and they destroyed it over jealousy. They would have hate to see Geauga Lake taking all the glory!(Cedar Fair Makes me sick)
Also, just to let everyone know! I heard today was going to be the start for The Villians Destruction and Double Loop, so I'm going to try and get some pictures today. _________________ (ACFG)Anti-Cedar Fair Group |

It really is a morbid curiosity... I don't WANT to see pictures of my childhood being torn down (okay... I was like 20 when villian was built)... but I CAN'T LOOK AWAY! This is like the longest funeral imaginable...
Think about it! Geauga Lake is like a close relative to most of us... I know that park BETTER than I know several aunts and uncles...
So imagine your favorite uncle dies... and you go to his funeral... and they DON'T LET YOU LEAVE FOR 7 MONTHS! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!
Brutal.
Please post the pics. No don't. Yea... post them...
I can't wait to get to Busch Garden's this weekend. I've never been... Too bad Drachen Fire is gone... it could have served as some self flagulation as reprisal for not making it to Geauga Lake for THREE YEARS! |
