They might be doing some clearing. They acquired some land down by the old Train shed down the hill.

What's the time frame for their expansion? I take it there's still plenty of cleaning up to do before any construction can take place.

they said by 2011 they should have built a 1 or 2 coasters, a hotel with an idoor waterpark, a few flat rides, and a bunch more stuff i forget. Its suppose to be big. ther suppose to add half the size of the park know. 1 thing is for sure cedar fair isnt going to be happy. this will probaly put kennywood as one of the biggest parks in the us. I cant wait cause i live in pittsburgh and go there every week and im going on tuesday. The expansion is going to be huge.

P.S. Cosmic choas the new ride their is horrible.

Just out of curiosity but why do you think Cosmic Chaos is horrible?  I enjoyed it - another great family ride.

i like spin rides like the wipeout and musik express, but this ride wasnt that great. I hate at the end it takes like 5 minutes to get off the ride. I went last sunday and it was closed. Something must be wrong with it idk. Im going this tuesday and im going to check it out. The thing with kennywood is they have so many rides that r shaped as a u or a pendulem and they all feel the same when u ride them. This isnt one of my favorite rides there. If u go ride the swing shot, that has to be the funnest ride their, but the best is the phantom's revenge.

The entire expansion is totally dependent on the completion of the Mon Valley Expressway.  One portion of the $5 billion project linking Pittsburgh with Morgantown is the PA Route 51 to I-376 Expressway which includes exits in the West Miffliin area near the park.  This expressway is going to give people much better access to the park and is going to open up to opportunities for the park, that is of course why they planned this expansion.  The only problem is, the highway is still several miles away from the park and construction I believe is halted right now due to lack of funding to complete the project.  Jerome Gibas, Kennywood's General Manager, said no work on the new expansion is going to happen until the expressway gets a lot closer to the park.

I can easily see the park investing in some new flat rides, maybe a new wooden coaster since you can get a good one for about $5-6 million, but until the expressway is finished, I don't see the park building the expansion.  It could be several years since they are struggling to get funding right now, so it could be another 3-5 years before we even see any work beginning on the expansion.

I doubt Kennywood would ever become that huge. They want to keep it classical and keep it traditional. What I would like to see them add is a really nice woodie and they haven't added one in like 50 some years. They have the hill as their advantage and they could easily make something that is 2x the size of Boulder Dash.

Actually he is kinda right...Jerome Gibas did say that in the near future he wanted to add two new coasters: one wooden and one steel.  And yes they have confirmed that they want to build a hotel and indoor waterpark along with a ton of new rides in the expansion, but like I said in my last post, none of this is going to happen unless hte Mon Valley Expressway is finished up to West Mifflin.  Again like I already said, this could take several years and maybe longer if funding is seized for the project.  So it could be 2011 or it could be later, we just have to wait and see.

im telling u i looked up this one thing on kennywood and it said its one of the most popular parks. With the expansion it'd be like adding 3-5 big attractions. We will just have to wait and see. they will build something real good in the next 2 years. U can qoute me on that.

Do I expect the park to add several new flats and maybe even a new coaster before the expansion gets built, yes...That's only because flat rides and a small wooden coaster, like a GCI doesn't cost a lot.  If you think about it, the park has probably spent around 6 million maybe the past two years building SwingShot and Comsic Chaos, which is roughly the cost of a new GCI wooden coaster.  Do I think the park can afford a new wooden coaster?  Heck yeah I do, I think that'll be the first new coaster they get.

However, you're not going to see construction on the expansion, whether it be numerous new flats in a single year or a large steel coaster like a large B&M which costs upwards of $15 million, until that expressway is done.  Kennywood is not as financially stable as you think and aren't in the position to be spending $15 million on a new steel coaster.  Once the expressway is complete, its going to open up a lot of major new opportunities and larger crowds, and once Kennywood starts bringing in large crowds and large sums of money, then we'll see the additon of a big signature steel coaster and lots of new flats in the new expansion.

Until that time comes, I expect Kennywood to continue with what they are doing right now and that is sprucing up old rides and adding a new flat ride every season or two.  Maybe we'll get lucky in two years or so and see construction on a brand new wooden coaster.

I don't think KW would ever add a B&M. It doesn't seem like them. Its either a wood coaster or something by Vekoma(seeing as they were gonna get a SLC).
