|
|
I have so many favorite memories of Geauga Lake and would love to hear other people's favorites too.
I remember being taught to treat people special and with respect. I also remember hearing, "people will always remember the way they were treated and how special they were made to feel." Now think about the way that Cedar Fair treated Geauga Lake and their patrons...I doubt that I will ever forget how poorly we were treated.
I remember back in 1993 when my family and I were stuck on the space spiral for about two and a half hours. By the time they got us down, there were news television crews on hand to tape us coming off the ride. We were told to meet at the Wharf restaurant and that lunch would be on the park. When we went to the restaurant, we were told to order anything we desired and that they would pick up the entire tap, including the tip. We were then instructed to stop at the main gate later in the day and that our park admission fee would be refunded and that we would be given free admission tickets to return to the park on another day. How's that for compensating a family for spending two and a half hours stuck on a ride? That was when the park was owned by Funtime.
I also remember about ten years ago, when Geauga Lake was owned by Premier Parks. I had taken my two daughters there, along with my nephew. Sometime around 4:00 in the afternoon, they had to close the park. For some reason, they were expecting a really nasty thunderstorm with lightning and hail and they decided to close the park. It didn't bother my children and I since we had season passes and we were there just about every week, but my nephew was a bit annoyed since he didn't get to ride everything he had been hoping to ride. As we were leaving the park, the attendants at the entrance gave us tickets to come back to the park on another day.
Over the years, I have taken at least 15 people with us on our outings to Geauga Lake. Sometimes it would only be an extra person or two, sometimes it would be two or three different cars in our group. Geauga Lake just had that special atmosphere where you could have fun like that. We were season pass holders at Geauga Lake for close to about ten years. We were Cedar Point season pass holders for two or three years, but we never had the same kind of family fun there that we did at Geauga Lake.
I am so thankful for having had the opportunity to "raise" my children at Geauga Lake. My children have been to other parks such as Disney, Kings Island, Cedar Point, Hershey, Kennywood, Darien Lake, Six Flags Great America and Busch Gardens but none are quite the same as the feeling we got at Geauga Lake. Probably the second best family parks would be tied for Kennywood and Darien Lake. Sure there are parks with bigger and better rides, but when it comes to quality family time, Geauga Lake was the best.
I hope to hear from others that had the same experience. Who knows, maybe sometime we'll meet at Kennywood since it's the next closest park to Geauga Lake.

| I have way too many but I guess my best hang out was the Arcade building that housed both Laff in the dark and the dodgems. There were two animated cowboys just outside Laff in the dark in the arcade. One was always broken but the other would mumble some things about pardner and stuff, then tell you to "Draw". Even though I rasied my arm and shot him before he raised his, he'd always win and tell me I was too slow, never failed. |

There are a lot, but my favorite memory is taking my son on his first big coaster rides. He loved the Big Dipper and the Double Loop. I think I must have taken 20 rides on the Double Loop that day as he just loved it. He really like to Big Dipper too, but I think Double Loop was his favorite.

I always enjoyed Oktoberfest. I loved going when I was in college, we didn't care how expensive the beer was then and we kept our glasses full. Then when I got a little older, I loved going to Oktoberfest and eating so many different foods and I looked forward to getting my rootbeer and desserts.
I will also always look back and remember by daughters face the first time she rode Villian. I thought she would be scared to death but she loved it and always wanted to ride it over and over. Last season she was finally over 48 inches, so I got to enjoy more rides with her. I'm thankful that I got to share the park with my kids. |

Every time I was in the park and it was running, I rode the Monorail (Bellaire/Park View Express) and loved looking at the park from above. I also loved riding in a boat through the trees on the Log Ride (Cuyahoga Valley Logging Co./Pepsi Plunge) and the way the Sky Glide took you into the woods and out over the Big Ditch.
My first visit to Sea World in 1973 with my mom, dad, grandfather and brother. The petting zoo and Captain Kid's World, Winterfest and my last SW visits in 2000. I loved Shamu Stadium at night, particularly with the neon cups or glow rings lighting up the hillside. I loved the way the cool air would hit you when you entered the Penguin Encounter and watching them swim around. Feeding the fish on both sides of the lake. Seeing the Big Dipper from across the lake with the sun setting behind it.
I love the memories from my first visit to GL with my grandmother, mother and brother in 1975 and riding the Tilt-a-whirl and Caterpillar, all the way up through visiting with my kids in the summer of 2007. Being half asleep at home after a company picnic at the park in the 80's and suddenly having the sensation that I was hearing screams and dropping down the Big Dipper's first hill. Watching the lights of Kiddyland and the Spider from Lee's Chicken across Route 43.
Too many other favorite rides to name - among them the Carousel, Rocket Ships, Merry Oldies, Needle/Skyscraper, Double Loop, Dodgems, Fly o' planes, Flying Scooters, Matterhorn/Haybaler, Super Cat, Corkscrew, Scrambler, Raging Wolf Bobs, Thunderhawk, Dominator. The old arcade and western village. That shooting gallery where you could make the guy play the piano. Paddle Boats and the Wave.
I also loved taking a break and just looking at the lake and trees. I hope that whatever happens part of the land will be open to the public to do that and, maybe, feed the fish. _________________ "It's a very special ride. We want to make sure it has a proper home." | Wow, I forgot about the shooting gallery. That was a great memory. I have never seen a shooting gallery I like as much as that one. The one at CP is stupid. The one at DW is almost as fun as the GL one. Thanks for reminding me about that old treasure. |

I have about at least 20 years worth of memory of Geauga Lake...I wouldn't know which one to choose, to me they were all good memories. _________________ Geauga Lake I will miss you! |

| Two of the most funny memories of mine took place on the same day. This was back in the day when the Sky Ride was there. We were going across the lake when it stopped and one of my flip flops fell off (I think it fell in the lake but I am not sure since I never found it. I was able to buy another pair (not cheap!), and we decided to ride the Double Loop. Guess what, I lost another darn flip flop, this one someone on the ground saw and one of the ride ops went and got it for me. I went back to the car and got my tennis shoes for the rest of the day. |

| Going to the wave pool and swimming, Hooks Lagoon. The log ride I used to ride at the end of every trip. Walking around with the map and my friend and I talking about where we should go next. |

| My favorite memories include time with my family and best friend riding over and over again. Mind Eraser and Yukon Yahoo marathons were the norm in my childhood. And my first and last rides on Big Dipper - those memories just got a little more treasured after today. |

One thing that was sheer magic was seeing the Sea World fireworks reflected in the lake at closing time, from the area between the Shooting Gallery and Sky Glide station. _________________ "It's a very special ride. in 1994 I was near 42 inches in height, which was the height required for the Double Loop at the time. It was a nice summer evening as my parents took me in line, as I waited I wondered what it would be like. Finally, it was time to board. The platform was full, and the tension grew as I stepped in the train, but before my harness was locked, the ride operator took me out for a measurement. The height stick was put behind me as the ride ops discussed for what seemed like an eternity. Then someone started chanting “let him on”, and before long the whole platform was chanting. It was determined, to the delight of all I was 42 inches exactly. As I went up that 95 foot lift, It felt so high as the climb seemed to last forever, 90 seconds later the orange train of which I rode returned to the station. When the train stopped the crowd cheered loudly.
My love affair with coasters started that night. My other favorite memory is riding the rockets at night. _________________ Confidentiality is telling one person at a time. |
