At the beginning of 2009, I was nervous about the future of Wildwater Kingdom. From all reports, however, it had a decent 2009 and WWK passes are already on sale for 2010, so it will be around at least one more year. As the Chief Financial Officer Peter J. Crage said during the Quarterly Conference Call back in August:

Quote:
We're actively trying to sell about 700 aces right outside of Cleveland, the site of the old Geauga Lake amusement park. Again, we've had some offers on that but they were way low and we feel it's more valuable than the offers that we've had on it. It's on a lake. We do have a small water park on one side of the lake that 's doing very well for us this year. Again I think if economic conditions and the state of the economy in northeastern Ohio that prohibited at this time from getting too much interest on that property but again when the economy turns around hopefully we can divest of that excess land as well.

One thing that made me nervous early in the year was the absence of Wildwater Kingdom from "Aurora Magazine" which is published by the City of Aurora and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. Cedar Point was listed in the "Entertainment & Shopping" section of the Community Information page, but not Wildwater Kingdom. Aurora Magazine would be a good place to promote the waterpark through a listing or even an article. The season passes really are a good deal for families in the area that like to swim. Aurora Magazine is at http://aurora.imagebuildersmarketing.us/

The cancelled Geauga Lake/Six Flags/Sea World/Wildwater Kingdom employee reunion was an interesting idea, I think there would be interest in an event like that in 2010 if it is publicized a month or so in advance online and in the local newspapers (Aurora, Solon, Streetsboro, Hudson, Bedford, Plain Dealer, Beacon Journal etc.). Sites like Facebook could also be a good way to get the word out, a lot of people who worked in the parks are reconnecting through sites like that.

There are a few other things that still make me wonder about the long-term prospects for the park -- the statement earlier in the year by a Cedar Fair spokesperson that nothing new would be added in 2010, the statement a few years before that by a Cedar Fair official that with waterparks you have to keep adding new elements, you have to keep refreshing. Are they going to add anything at all for 2010?

It is not Geauga Lake or Sea World, but it is something that carries on some of the fun of both places, I hope it sticks around.

I know the waterpark is the only remnant left but if they want the waterpark to stay, it is all contingent on what happens across the lake. They need to add more water attractions to the waterpark and perhaps some other attractions like a go-kart track or an amphitheater overlooking the lake, but if Big Dipper stays on site and is developed in a way that it'll bring more visitors, then I think it will benefit the waterpark.

I think what they did with WWK last year is a kick in the face to loyal customers. Might have well just added a new Cornhole game. If WWK is to really survive it needs something new. It might be a good bargain right now for the residents of Aurora, but its not really a good value as far as water parks go. I know CF has surplus water attractions, they seem to be generous on moving stuff around these days, but the statement directly from foot in mouth expert Robin Innes already saying nothing new would be added in 2010 leaves one to wonder. 2010 will be a telling year for the survival of WWK.

Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom to add Nothing™ in 2010!

Aurora, OH-  The greatest waterpark this side of Ohio announced today that the park will be adding Nothing™ for the 2010 season.  “Cedar Fair is known for adding record-breaking attractions, and this year will be no exception as we add the world’s largest Nothing to Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom!’ said park spokesman Robin Innes.  “Nothing will join the already incredible line-up of 16 world-class slides and attractions at Wildwater Kingdom and will make the park an even more attractive option for families on a budget looking for summertime fun.”  Nothing™ will be located throughout the vast Wildwater Kingdom complex and will be included with the cost of park admission.  Mr. Innes added that while admission prices and parking fees will be increased by a nominal amount for 2010, the addition of Nothing™ will make guests forget all about that.  “The added value of having Nothing at Wildwater Kingdom should help ease the pains of the increased ticket fees.  We will continue to offer heavy discounts throughout the summer with various promotions, so keep your eyes out for special Wildwater Kingdom funday deals!”

The addition of Nothing™ in 2010 has peaked the interest of the millions of annual Wildwater Kingdom visitors as to what future additions the park may have in store.  Mr. Innes threw this teaser out.  “We anticipate Nothing to bring a large increase in attendance this year.  With that increased attendance, we can definitely look forward to Zilch™ in 2011, Bupkus™ in 2012 and ZeroPointZero™ in 2013!”

Nothing™ marks the single largest expansion at Wildwater Kingdom since Tidal Wave Bay debuted in 2006.  The enormous waterpark is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Cleveland, Ohio in tropical Aurora, OH.  In addition to Nothing™, the park also offers the largest wave pool in Northeast Ohio, a towering funnel slide, cement sidewalks, and a stunning view of a rotting, decrepit wooden roller coaster across the lake.  Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom opens for the 2010 season in late May.

Has my sense of humor gotten stale yet?  Has it annoyed some of you to the point of saying “Enough already, Ray”?  I sure hope so.  I’d hate for all my hard work to go unnoticed… Wink

I have had conversations with people from several different states, and in two different countries, who were surprised and disappointed to hear that Geauga Lake had closed.   When I mentioned that a waterpark was still there, they hesitated for a second before wistfully saying that a waterpark would probably not be worth the drive.

Give then a reason to make the drive and people with a history of going to the property (Sea World, Geauga Lake, Six Flags) and fond memories may well make the trip, even from out of state or from Canada.

I still think the water coaster form carrowinds would be a great fit for wildwater! I also wish they would have kept the nets up for the kids to dry off and have some fun. They even still use the bathrooms in that area. Has anyone heard if they are going to do anything with the buildings over there like the theater? It would have been nice for them to  bring the waterslides from the geauga lake side. they look nice in Kansas city.
