Hi Amanda,
Samantha (pepperpot) asked me to look at the problem you posted over in the community forum. I answered your post, but noticed it was set to Resolved, so didn't know if you would return there or not. Thought I would post the same thing here since it might be of interest to others as well as yourself.
Here's what I posted in the FPB community forum:
On one occasion when I went to your forum, the ad bar at the top of the webpage was blank and I got the following message at the top of my browser:
“Your security settings do not allow Websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for options.”
This only happened once out of several visits to your forum. It seems that some 3rd party was trying to download and execute an ActiveX control, probably through whatever ad happened to be in the window at the moment. This is probably when bad things happen to you if you logon to your forum when that particular activity is displaying, whatever it was. My IE Security settings prevent this from happening on my computer, thus perhaps that is why I do not see the things you say you see at the bottom of your browser, unless you are referring to viewing the Privacy Report, but it sounds like that is not what you are referring to? I do see that if I double-click on the Privacy Report symbol (red symbol with white dash through it on the bottom right of your browser), that a.tribalfusion.com, c7.statcounter.com, and www.altavista.com cookies are being blocked from my computer.
There are things that you can do to prevent cookies from these sites being downloaded onto your computer, as well as prevent any unwanted ActiveX controls from being installed and run on your computer. Here are a few suggestions:
Internet Explorer Security settings:
1. Select Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > click on the Internet Zone symbol > select the Custom button.
2. Under ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins:
a. Set “Automatic prompting for ActiveX Controls” to “Enable”
b. Set “Download signed ActiveX controls” to “ Prompt”
c. Set “Download unsigned ActiveX controls” to “Disable”
d. Set “Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not Marked as Safe” to “Disable”
e. Set “Software channel permissions” to “Medium Safety”
3. Now, select the Restricted Sites Zone symbol and then the Custom button:
a. Set everything to “Disable” except the following:
i. Software Channel Permissions – “High Safety”
ii. Use Pop-up Blocker – “Enable”
iii. Logon – select “ Prompt for user name and password”
These settings ensure that Internet Explorer will block all cookies from Web sites in this zone, and block other malicious activity based on the security settings.
4. As a quick fix to stop cookies from tribalfusion, statcounter, and altavista from being installed on your computer, do the following:
a. With the Restricted Sites Zone selected, click on the Sites button. Add the following sites to the Restricted Sites table that appears as follows:
i. *.tribalfusion.com
ii. *.statcounter.com
iii. *.altavista.com
Other Steps you can take to prevent this from happening:
1. Go to our message board at Geeks, Geeks and More Geeks at
http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore
2. Go to the Windows Computer Help category and Select the Tutorials Forum. Note: you must be a member and logged in to view this forum. I know you are a member there, but others reading this may want to check it out too.
3. Select "Sticky #3, How did I get infected and what can I do to prevent it.” Pay particular attention to the following steps and follow these if you follow none of the others (I recommend you follow them all to make your computer as safe as you possibly can). Installing the following on your computer results in thousands of bad and risky sites being entered in your Restricted Sites table, thus preventing cookies and other objects from these sites from being downloaded onto your computer:
a. Step 6. Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster
b. Step 7. Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy
c. Step 10. IE-SPYAD
The above are your best defense against receiving unwanted cookies from potentially malicious, risky, or annoying web sites. Update them often.
4. Practice safe surfing by only surfing the internet in a Limited User account or (for XP users only) download DropMyRights developed by Microsoft to surf in a restricted mode from the Owner/Administrator account. By using DropMyRights to surf, you will not have to switch user accounts.
You can use DropMyRights to create safer shortcuts for your browsers, your email, and your Instant Messengers. This prevents any application from being installed on your system while you are in this restricted mode, making your computer more secure. You can read all about DropMyRights and how to install and use it in the Tutorials Forum at “Sticky #12 Alternative to surfing the web in Limited User Account.”
5. You mentioned the following in your post about your problem:
“Windows/PCHEALTH/HelpCenter/System/RemoteAssistance/Interaction
/Client/rcreen6_head.htm
The rcreen6_head.htm is the a.tribalfusion.com cookie the most dangerous cookie to hit the internet…”
Actually, rcreen6_head.htm - when opened - loads Remote Assistance. Unless you use it, make sure you have Remote Assistance turned off on your computer. To do that:
a. Right-click My Computer and select Properties from the drop-down menu that appears.
b. Select the Remote tab in the Properties window. Make sure that the box beside “Allow remote assistance invitations to be sent from this computer” is not checked.
c. If you are using Windows Firewall (or another software firewall for that matter), make sure that Remote Assistance is not checked in the “Exceptions” table. In the Control Panel select Security Center > Windows Firewall > Exceptions. As a matter of fact, nothing there should be checked except those exceptions related to your anti-virus and anti-spyware applications unless you are on a LAN and do file and print sharing between computers.
6. Use ccleaner to help keep your computer and registry clean and uncluttered:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download
7. If you think you may have a virus, spyware, or other malware on your computer, check out “Sticky #6 Step-by-Step Virus and Malware Removal Procedures” in the Tutorials forum. This has proven to be a very effective step-by-step procedure for our members in cleaning an infected computer.
8. As a final thought, if this problem only began just recently, review what you had installed on your forum prior to that and uninstall things one at a time to see if your problem clears. As I mentioned above, I don't have the problem you describe when I visit your site because of my security settings in IE, and I also use DropMyRights whenever I surf. Dizzler.com does not appear to be a problem site, but you never know for sure. Check out where you are getting your smilies from too. _________________ Repa

Thanks so much for this tutorial, Repa. I read it, then followed the step by step instructions. After completing the instructions, I wanted to make a thank you post. When I click the submit button, this entire page went white and then nothing.
I logged back on the internet and headed to Ravenz Den. Nothing happened. It never finished loading...not even a page not found. Everything at a complete standstill. I came to this forum without a problem.
I'm not sure what the problem could be. Something is definately wrong and it happened just recently. I hadn't installed anything on my site just various posts, graphics, zip files. I had the board since May 2007 but didn't become active on it until the last seven (7) days.
The only problem I had was the Cash MOD not working; so, I posted for help at the FPB forum for the first in months. It was there that I received assistance from Driftwood. He was the only one who didn't post rhetoric as a response to my cry for help. LoL
That's it! Drift designed the theme and did an awesome job.
It's almost as if my forum has been taken from me by FPB for some reason that's unknown to me. I spent days filling that forum with information that I stayed up many nights to prepare; tutorials, preparing images.. the whole 9-yards. As always, as soon as I'm done and ready to share with the public, something happens to the board.
Thanks for your help Repa and to pepperpot for even going out her way to get you to help me. Since I can't log on my forum anymore.. I'll play my flute for a while and just work on some graphics.
Check ya later.. and thanks again!
*Edited
I decided not to give up so easy. I re-read your instructions to make sure I had everything correct. I scanned my computer in safe mode, changed my IP address and guess what... I was able to log in to my forum. Not only that, there's no activity on my hard drive and running as smooth as silk!
Thanks Repa! I owe ya one (or two)! |

FPB was having a problem or doing an update earlier, and I experienced the same thing you did. Could not get to this message board until just a few minutes ago, although I had something else I was busy with, so things may have cleared up earlier and I just didn't know it. So, don't give up on your forum just yet - stuff happens and it isn't your fault!
I'll try to spend some time on your forum and see what happens.
Thanks for the tutorials in Photography, BTW. They're very nicely done! I don't have Photoshop, but do use Photoshop Elements. So far, I've been able to do everything I've wanted to do with Elements, but someday I'll probably have to break down and get the real thing. _________________ Repa

Amanda, there is something I forgot above that you need to check concerning your privacy settings.
1. Select Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > Advanced button.
2. In the Advanced Privacy Settings window under cookies, check the following:
a. Check the box beside "Override Automatic cookie handling
b. Under "First Party Cookies" select "Accept"
c. Under "Third Party Cookies" select "Block"
3. I leave the box unchecked beside "Always allow session cookies."
4. Click OK twice to get out of the windows.
Sorry I forgot about this earlier. Oh, I just now saw your edit in your post above. Glad things are working ok now. I still recommend that you set your Privacy settings as stated in 1 - 4 above if they aren't already set that way. _________________ Repa

Something else is going on I think. Are you able to link to my board? Sandra says that when she tried to link back to the board the only thing she could see was the banner, I think. Everything else was gone.
Ever had that happen before or heard of something like that happening? |

I saw her message over there, and I don't have a clue right now - I'm not having any problems. Everything looks normal to me. I tried changing themes, and everything still looked ok. _________________ Repa

All I can see is the banner and writing, all the background and forum bars and colors are gone. I can see all the board and forums. just theme is gone BUT only when I use the link on my board. Is it a private board? surely not since I can see everything except the theme... REALLY STRANGE another freaky halloween happening...
***edited.
OH and I just noticed when I click on anything on the no background Ravenz Den, it will not switch to the forum. I can click anything on it but it will not take me where I want to go. It just stays on the index page. How will anyone join using my link if they cant even sign in/register???

Wait a moment... I don't get it.
Are we talking about Raven's board?
If so I can see everything just fine too.
I don't know if it has to do with the stuff on the portal... but I had to take a lot of stuff out of our portal.... because things would conflict and make the page load slow.
Raven should try to turn them off... and gradually add one by one... as you add... log off, clean cache... log back in... I've done so many experiments with out portal and things on at the footer that I just give up... some of the scripts clashed

Raven
Out of curiosity... what browser are you using?
It could be a problem with your session cookies.
I found this article on the net
What are session cookies used for?
Without cookies, websites and their servers have no memory. A cookie, like a key, enables swift passage from one place to the next. Without a cookie every time you open a new web page the server where that page is stored will treat you like a completely new visitor.
Websites typically use session cookies to ensure that you are recognised when you move from page to page within one site and that any information you have entered is remembered. For example, if an e-commerce site did not use session cookies then items placed in a shopping basket would disappear by the time you reach the checkout. You can choose to accept session cookies by changing the settings in your browser. _________________
