You are most welcome, Sandra. And thank you for the kind words! It is so nice of you to offer the gifs - it's more than enough - and I will use them from time to time. My interest is more in photography and photographic restoration, but you and Raven are peaking my interest in graphic art. I've done a little, but nothing like you 2 ladies do, so now I can learn from you! Thank you!

I am glad my gifs are ok. I found another way to say thank you though. Not that it is any use for you either...lol, but you can sign in to FPB support and you may find something there as well.

Hi Sandra,

You are so nice! Unfortunately, I cannot find what you are talking about at FPB support. I logged in, noticed that I had a PM, but cannot access it as I get a message telling me that "Private messaging has been disabled on this board." So if that is what you are referring to, I cannot get to it. Is it perhaps set up for board staff only now? I didn't find anything on the message board itself.

BTW, Sandra, I added a post in the thread about Raven's problem concerning Privacy settings. I had inadvertantly left that out in my original post (actually, I forgot lol). Be sure to check it out as the settings recommended give you protection against 3rd party cookies for web sites that might not be listed in the Restricted Sites table.

Guess I'm a little paranoid when it comes to computer security, but I don't have problems, and that's the way I want it. I can put up with the little inconveniences that the added protection gives - it's worth it! My computer is not a toy.

OH I am sorry, I forgot to mention that pms are disabled on the support forum. When you get a pm in support, you need to look at Transactions. The pm is telling you that you got a donation, that is all. Sorry I thought you knew.

I see NO ADS, not anywhere in any of the forums!  A BLESSING for sure... and that came from you, I know it. I had been seeing all the ads everywhere even after I followed your tutuorials. But when I cleaned my system last night and turned off the computer then logged on this morning.. POOF all the ads are gone!  So thank you, thank you a million thank yous!

I'm so glad everything is working good for you now, Sandra.

Thank you very much for your gift over at FPB Support! I finally found it! But I am embarrassed to confess that I have no idea what to do with it or how to use it. I don't spend very much time over there unless there is a problem with this message board that Sam and I can't solve together. So, I'm kind of ignorant about what to do. I guess those are the Powerbucks I see under my username when I post? If you'll tell me what to do and how to use them, I'll try to do so. It's the thought that counts, and I really appreciate it! You're very kind!

When you have enough Pb's, you can go to the supports shop, and buy stuff. Domain name, search engines and I don't know if they added anything else.

I figured if both you and Sam are on there you can transfer pbs to buy something the board may need sometime.

Thank you Sandra. We'll try to make good use of the pbs. Sam has been wanting to get a domain name, so maybe we'll use it for that in the future. I know she has a lot of pbs.

I'm really not much of a forum person and sometimes struggle to find where things are on the control panel as far as configuration goes. None of it seems intuitively obvious to me like it does to the younger folks like Sam. Man, she's great and has done so much for this board - always coming up with new ideas! I was "drafted" into this position in 2006 when I came to this board seeking an answer to what I thought was a problem with my computer, and ended up answering my own question. I stuck around for a while and helped some folks out, and the next thing you know, I was made an Administrator. All of the originators of this board are gone now except for 1 - prophotoimages. We do hope that Keith (Novice57) will come back someday, but things will have to get much better with his wife before that happens. He's much more technically knowledgeable than I.

I do enjoy helping folks whenever I can. Isn't that what God's purpose for our life is - to try to make things better for our fellow man and help whenever we can? So, I do enjoy the board and interacting with the members. Glad you came and decided to stay - you are contributing a lot, and you have our gratitude.

Sandra

I'm glad that it the "NO ADS" has worked for you too... I did try leaving hints at the FPB Support a while back... I couldn't blatantly say how to do it there because Chris would want my head on a silver plater if I had done so Rolling Eyes

But this Ads thing is not good for any of us... we now know there is a way to "hide" them... we don't see them.. but potential members would and not knowing that there is a way... they would just leave to never return... I know I would be one.

I know this is a free service... Chris knows that the way he needs to survive on the net is to show that he has a ratio of constant traffic... what he does not seem to understand is that he needs us... we are the ones brining the traffic to his service and how are we to do so with these ads?... All I can say is that he has to find a better way.

I too was drafted here - lol - I join this group in partially to get web page building help... as this was a way I met Novice57 - at first I was a lurker... but I saw how the members interacted with each other and became pretty much attached with quite a few here - I too enjoy helping folks whenever I can.. with a chuckle or two

In Repa words... I'm glad you came and decided to stay - you are contributing a lot, and you have our gratitude. Please know as well that between you, Wwe and Raven; are also peaking my interest in graphic arts.

Yes I had read several people say they could not see the ads, I could not figure it out. I hadn't even while here, I still saw the ads you guys didn't. But I was having problems with the loading and shut down of my computer. I didn't know what to do, until one day there were no new post's. whenever there are no new posts I go to some of the unanswered posts and just read. I have pulled up a couple of old thread I found interesting and posted on those.

While there of course I saw 3 pages of stickies...hehehe. I am going wow what is this, I have read most of them, then I saw the shut down one, I am WIDE EYED, Yaaaayyy, this is just what I need!!! Followed directions and it ALL worked. I still need help, when I run AVG, it takes AVG 3 and a half whole hours to scan my whole computer..lol. At 1 time I had 1100 running process's and 598 running... Ooops I forgot what you call it...

Since the stream line the running processes were reduced by half, but it still took avg 3 and a quarter hours to scan...lol.

Thing is I have no idea what is needed to run my computer and what was installed and running on it on this old computer that my daughter in law gave me. I would hate to remove something I need because I don't have the cd to replace it, and my daughter in law can not find her discs.

Well back to subject...lol. I also followed a recent post about protecting my computer and when I restated my computer the next day, poof the ads were gone.

AWESOME, and all thanks to you guys!

Sandra

Sandra,

I think that was a beautiful thing you did for Repa. I have been reading this thread and can see how nice everyone here is towards each other. Always willing to help out all of you.

Sandra, that is way too much stuff running - even cut by half. You shouldn't have more than 25 or 30 processes running at any one time at the maximum! And the other 598 things running - are you referring to applications? The only applications you should see running are your open browser and any programs that you, yourself started. Avg doesn't take near that long to run unless you have a lot of resources tied up, and it sounds like you do.

Try to be more descriptive about what you have running, but it sounds like you really need to go through Sticky #6 Step-by-Step Virus and Malware Removal Procedures from beginning to end. Also, have you gone into msconfig > Startup tab and unchecked everything that is not associated with your antivirus application and security application if you use something other than Windows Firewall?

I also followed a recent post about protecting my computer and when I restated my computer the next day, poof the ads were gone.

Which post is that, Sandra? I have no problems, but I do see the links to ads in the ad banner by Google at the top of the page just above the menu bar. I'm curious as to why others don't see that and I do, unless those that don't are using IE7 while I'm still on IE6?

LOL, I followed everything you told Raven to do in her problem, even the other one you forgot to add the first time..lol. and of course the, shut down and start up, plus I think there was one more, the security setting one too in the sticky section.

As for....msconfig >, yes I did that part. BUT there is so much in there, that I don't know what is security and what is not, I did take out alot though.... Hmmm,

I will be back. Let me go take another look.

Sandra

I am sending you something through pm.

Repa,
As you all know, my host files got hijacked about 4 months ago and I follow your Sticky #6 Step-by-Step Virus and Malware Removal Procedures

As my host files where hijacked I could not access none of the "Security Sites", in order to recuperate them I follow one of the cleaning steps of the tutorial: Step= 3.f... but as I read and investigated further I found a more update version of it -> http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm <- I tell ya... it works like a charm... I see no ads... no banners, no pop-ups on FPB... not even the ads at places like Cnet or PCWorld.

Here is an excerpt:

"You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems."

You are to download the list... about 200pages of urls... this block all ads, plus blocks you from going to sites loaded with ads

It may make your machine run a bit slow... as it has to read all the urls listed before accessing a site... but I prefers it.

As you know... technology is always being updated and I'm cleaning up the Gateway computer.

My sis found this other one... it works like the "Host files"... it blocks most Ad sites but not Ads from Goggle and such... which is what FPB is using.

Here is it:
Spyware Blaster
Some of the nastiest kinds of spyware--autodialers, home page hijackers, and others--install themselves as ActiveX controls. Spyware Blaster protects you against them, blocking the installation of ActiveX-based malware and other types of spyware, and eradicating tracking cookies that might otherwise invade your privacy. The program works with Firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer, and it prevents your browser from being diverted to dangerous sites. One particularly nice touch is the utility's System Snapshot, which (as you'd expect) takes a snapshot of your PC; if your computer gets infected later on, you can revert to the clean version.

Download Spyware Blaster

This was found on PcWorld.com from the free lance writer Preston Gralla

Yep, the hosts file would do that. I don't want a lot of stuff in mine, however, as I have the other safeguards, and the ad banner doesn't bother me. What I'm curious about is what post Sandra followed that seemed to eliminate the ads from her view. If I wrote it, it didn't work for me, and I want to find out why.

Spywareblaster is mentioned in Sticky #3 and is a major tool - along with Spybot and IESpyad - for blocking the installation of ActiveX-based malware and other types of spyware, and eradicating tracking cookies that might otherwise invade your privacy. Each application does the same thing, but the combination of the 3 adds to the number of URLs entered into the restricted sites table, as each lists some that the others don't.
