Hi peanut_cracker
Do you have Home Edition? Is your Pop-up blocker working?
Exactly what does the popup window says... Does it show a path... something like this
c:\WINDOWS\System32\mshtmpre.dll
I think something could be missing in your reference registry and it might be something as simple as running "msconfig" and unchecking the reference in the startup routine
but wait for further assessment on this please as I do not know how to carry you through these steps _________________

The warning message you get should tell you the name and location of the missing dll. You need that information in order to fix your problem. Once you have that, go to Sticky: #15 Missing a .dll file? Here's how to fix it! in the Tutorials forum. _________________ Repa

Ok, peanut_cracker, here's one way of getting around that. You will need your WinXP Pro CD to do this:
Windows XP has a utility called scannow. This is a great tool for troubleshooting Windows XP problems. The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.
One of the problems it can address is when you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt or missing system files using scannow sfc.
To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow
and click OK.
This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem or is missing. There will probably come a point in time where you will get a window asking for your WinXP professional CD. Insert the CD and click Retry. This process will take a while, so go get a cup of coffee or something.
Note: If you do not have an WinXP Pro retail CD, but you do have a restore CD from your PC manufacturer then determine the path on that CD to the folder named I386. you may have to explore the CD to find the folder. Do the following:
Step 1
Locate the folder called:
I386
on your restore CD. Copy this onto your hard drive into the system root; that is going to be C:\ so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:\I386
Step 2
Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files needed for scannow sfc on your PC. We do this in the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:
SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive (D:\), and that is why it will ask you for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to:
C:\
To do that, simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
Now restart your computer and run sfc /scannow!
Note: you can do this with your WinXP Pro CD as well, if you have it and want to, and then when you run scannow sfc, it will not call for the CD, but will look for the files it needs at C:\I386.
This may or may not solve your problem, but it's worth a shot. If it doesn't fix it, post back here and I'll suggest something else. I'll need to know what CD you have, the WinXP Professional or the manufacturer's Restore CD. _________________ Repa

Repa, I ran the request and it did ask for the windows xp cd. All of the dll files were ok. I will just assume it is some program that is trying to run but something I don't need.. with the window showing I still can do every thing I need ..also I can just x out of it and it never comes back up unitl windows has rebooted but nothing seems to be wrong....so thanks for the help...peanut_cracker |

Sorry that didn't work. It fixes a lot of problems, but there is no guarantee.
I noticed that your original post is 16 Oct. If your problem started then, or shortly before, and you have a system restore point that pre-dates when you think your problem started, do a system restore back to that point in time and see if that fixes your problem. I should have suggested this first - sorry, I don't know where my mind is lately. Getting old I guess!
If that doesn't work, download ccleaner at:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Run both the Cleaner and Issues options. If you have an invalid link in the registry, the Issues option may find and fix it.
If that doesn't work, you can do a non destructive install of WinXP without losing any of your installed programs or data files by carefully following the step-by-step directions given here:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
Search down the page until you find a link that says "How to Run a Repair Install" and click it. It will take you to a procedure on how to do a repair install. The procedure will reinstall Windows over itself without reformating the hard drive or destroying the programs and data files you have on your system.
You should back up any important datafiles just in case something goes wrong. You will have to run Windows Update upon completion of the above. Do not go anywhere else on the internet until you run Window Update.
Note: just for informational purposes, another approach is given here:
http://www.informationweek.com/windows/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897
This one is especially useful if your system won't boot into Windows. _________________ Repa
