Wwe,
I have no knowledge of linux, Novice was in charge of this forum and we were hoping to get another person to take it over. But I understand that Linux is a free Operating System and that Vista is a hog on the OS. It requires about 2 gigs of memory to run respectably, meanwhile Ubuntu Linux can do so with only 512 MB.
What Vista are you running?... cause I understand that HomEdition is more of a beast on the OS than Business. Linux can run some windows software, but the support is spotty.
See Ubuntu Linux here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
See Linux here:
http://www.linux.org/
You can download either one of these OS and then use Open Office for your office tool and Firefox for your browser
I think you know about Open Office, I posted a thread on it already:
http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore/geeksmore-about1276.html
And at this thread you can find all the free browsers out there to download:
http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore/geeksmore-about1472.html
Here I found this article if you are interested in reading it
http://www.pcmech.com/article/can-linux-replace-windows/
Well that's my 2 cents for now... I think Fay, Rike, Jane or Repa has more knowledge on this subject.

Wwe, you should have 2GB of Ram, 1GB in each of your slots if you want to have better than average speed. 1GB is the minimum you should have for Vista.
Have you gone through Stickies 14 and 4 in the Tutorials forum? Going through these stickies step-by-step beginning with Sticky 14 almost always increases your system performance significantly. _________________ Repa

Yes, go through 14 and 4 in that order. Sticky 14 talks about increasing your RAM. For Vista, increase it to at least 1GB, and 2GB if you can afford it. _________________ Repa

Hi wwe9112,
You have probably downloaded a ISO file that needs to be burned to a CD/R using a ISO burner, heres one
(http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm)
This will give you a live CD that you can boot off from your c d rom, you may need to adjust your bios to boot from the CD.
This then lets you to try out the O.S. without changing anything on your hard drive and if you like it you can then install from the CD to your hard drive.
I suggest you join a Linux forum close to you, just Google Linux usergroups to find one close, from what I've seen they like to help out people moving to Linux

Hello wwe9112,
I'm assuming that you downloaded a ISO file containing Ubuntu.
If this is the case it needs to be burned to a CD-R using ISO burning software (your usual burning software might not burn ISO files)
This needs to be done so the CD can be used to boot up Ubuntu from your optical drive at startup.
e.g. when you power up your system, you place the burnt CD into your CD drive before Windows starts.
If Ubuntu doesn't boot up it could be that you need to adjust your bios setting to allow your computer to boot from the CD drive.
Yes you are allowed to burn it.
