Actually Sheila, Repa is right. It really depends on traffic. This morning, when everyone was in church (I have 4 within my sight from my front porch), the numbers were higher. Earlier, around 8pm, things were really slow.
I have no idea what comcast promised, don't care, as long as it is fast. Which it is most of the time. I can usually tell when traffic is high. _________________

If you are on cable, you can get inconsistent results depending on the time of day. As more users get on your line, your bandwidth decreases, and your download and upload rates suffer as the # of users increases. You may notice decreases in performance after people get home from work during the week, and on weekends. Best performance is usually after midnight. It also depends on the server load at the sites you visit. Distance isn't as much of a factor as the other 2. This doesn't happen nearly to the same degree with DSL, as you have your own, dedicated line with DSL, whereas you are sharing the same line with others on cable. The more dense the population of cable users in your neighborhood is, the more impact that has.
If you haven't gone through Sticky ?#11 in the tutorials forum, you may find that will help some. If you are frequently experiencing slower rates with cable than your ISP advertises and you can get DSL, I'd recommend it. I love it! My ISP advertises 1536Kbps download and I get pretty consistent results, regardless of time of day here. The main variable is server load at the test sites. To illustrate, below are 3 tests, one close by on the eastern seaboard, one in the middle of the country, and one at the far end of the country on the northwestern seaboard (note that the best download rate is not obtained at the closest test site, but the results from all 3 test sites are pretty consistent with each other):

You can get much faster DSL speeds in some areas, depending on your distance from your ISP's closest sub-station. I live in a small rural community and this is the fastest that is available to me at this time. |
I just went to Verizon site and checked what they have to offer...I've noted their tower or closeness to it matters as well...
Fay & Repa...you both have the fastest speeds in these tests...Fay I'm impressed at your speed...but the test shows it's close to where you live...
These are the prices Verizon has in my area...I don't know how to check how far their towers are from me...I am thinking about it but not sure...My current speed is and has always been a good thing...depending on how many windows I have opened...The messenger if I have three opened slows down quite a bit..plus I use the winks (Wwe) it seems I send them faster...
I'm paying $24.99 a month for my high speed Internet...this is what Verizon charges...

Repa,,,Do you have the power Plan? The speeds you show seem as if you do? Before I decide to change over I want to make sure I'm getting the speed and best price...
What do you pay Fay a month for those speeds you showed in this thread?
Repa...You too please...or anyone else so I can compare...thanks so much...
Thanks...have a perfectly nice day...lol... _________________

I began with Alltel ADSL at 1536kbs download and 384kbs upload. Windstream took them over. I currently pay 24.99 or 29.99 per month (I forget which it is). My contract started out as committed for 1 year, and after the 1st year has been from month to month (plus the modem/router they provided is now mine). I have had this service since Jan 2002 with very few outages. I'm pretty happy with it - just wish I could get the faster 3.0Mbs download speed, but I'm not close enough to their substation to get it (or so they tell me). _________________ Repa

Repa,
Thanks...See that is what I'm wonder about the sub stations...how close are they from my house...
I'm looking into it..but thanks for letting me know..The price of the 3mb seems a lot with one computer...plus I'm paying $24.99...I don't mind $29.99 if it ends up being worth it in the end...
Take care and have a nice day... _________________

There should be a page on the service providers website where you can enter your phone number and it will come back with what services and speeds are available to you. If you can't find where to do that, call them and ask. _________________ Repa

Sheila,
I have cable and it is kind of high. Didn't have DSL in my area when I got it. Actually they only got the DSL here in the last few monts. They had it in other parts of town but not in my addition.
I have the 3.0 MB speed and it is 43.00. It is their slowest speed I think. You can get faster.

Repa,
Yes I did check on line and entered my phone number to see if they provided service in my area...I read every sub menu they had and did speed tests as well...They didn't tell me where the sub stations were...lol...I was just wondering how that might effect service...I do intend on calling them ...thanks...I also intend on calling Cable to see which of the 3 speeds I have to date...I know I had the middle speed when I first got Cable...I'm not sure if that has been changed with out my knowledge... Possible Kim called them when I wasn't around...but your speed tests are very impressive...as well as the equipment provided and cost...
Fay,
Yes your tests are very impressive now I understand as you are paying for the 3.0 MB speed but I thought that was the highest speed...which is making me wonder what speed I'm being charged for now....After I make that phone call to Charter and find out I'll let you all know...I am thinking about changing to Verizon but need to do my homework...I like the idea of getting the router and modem which Repa has with his package...I'm going to write a list when I speak to both Version and Cable...
I have a couple of other questions which come to mind...
Say for instance I have the TV and computer on at the same time (hooked up on a 3 way splitter in the cellar 2 TV and 1 computer) could this inter fer with the computer speed?
I've also seen Verizon has a new thing which is called Fios and it sounds like they come through a cable line...They have been advertising it on TV for a while now...The last time I checked it wasn't available in my area but that was a while ago...but it would be interesting to know for future changes...I was just wondering if anyone has heard about Fios and what that is all about...The ad says...Get all in one...High Speed Internet, TV and Phone for $99.00 ...this is what gets me...We will give you a free flat panel TV if you order now...
Sure they are offering this as a package and it looks impressive but I don't need the phone (have verizon as my provider but not long distance)...What are they trying to compete with Cable's All in One Package and throw in a TV...especially the price of $99 for all...but there's always a but...After the 6 months or year contract what will it cost after...Sure $99.00 is a better deal than I'm paying now for Cable...plus those contracts...but I wouldn't mind getting a free flat panel TV...lol...Sorry just thinking aloud and wondering for the future which deals will best suit me...
thanks so much for all your input... _________________

Sheila,
WHen I got my cable intenet, I think they told me it should not be on a spliter. Don't know if that is true not but I am pretty sure hat is what they said. Can't remember if they said why.
I just checked on what they offer - tjey have 2 speeds fo rhome uses.
download 3Mb - upload 300Kbps
their site say's 32.00 but I am paying more
I think that is a promotionl rate
download 5 Mb upload 500Kbps for 53.00
download 8 Mb upload 500Kbps for 63.00
