Sheila,

The actual speed should only be a little less then what your internet provider says you are getting. (see advertisement from your provider or contract)

For example, lets say that your download speed says its 3Mbps (Megabits per second) you are getting a 968 Kbps (kilobits per second) which is pretty below. Your upload speed is 491 Kbps (kilobits per second) - again check to see your provider to see if that is what they offer.

I also notice that you choose the server all the way to NewYork... isn't there one closer to you?

Check again and try to choose one that is closer to you.

Sam...I just took the test and no there wasn't a tower closer to me...

I was just wondering what would show up..

I'm happy with the speed I get but wondered what would show up...Not sure what I get from my ISP...

Thanks,

I did another test this morning...The closest tower is Portland Maine...

Since I installed IE7 my computer is sluggish and the start up speed is slower...The last two mornings (not this morning because I opened Charter Web Mail) my email Microsoft froze so I had to shut it down with the task manager...I guess I have to wait a couple of extra minutes when I start up in the morning before trying to check my mail..Or use Charter which is supposed to be safer ...

I am pretty happy with my speed most of the time...I did disable the phishing website because that seems to be what is making it slow..

I also went to System properties by right clicking my computer>Advanced Tab>Properties and set it for best performance...This morning everything seems to be working faster..

Of course when I did that test above I had a few windows opened...

I haven't opened Office this morning but by now I'm sure it won't freeze...Strange because when I opened it yesterday ..My Home page didn't freeze...but I was able to reopen Office and everything was fine once I shut it down and reopened it...Maybe setting my Advanced options for best performance has helped...Smile

Confused...so am I...but not worried...the test doesn't show much difference...Smile

Confuse... a teeny tinny bit Killer Laugh

Nahhh... just kidding.... Sheila I'm surprise at your speed... you have broadband plus your computer is much bigger than mine.

My old computer takes about 4 min. to boot up... after that I can have as many programs I want open and they do not freeze.

Your computer is not behaving properly and most likely Repa will tell you to check for viruses.

But here's a tip... don't check with the scanners already in your computer... they will never find anything that is already part of the system... you should check with the free ones in Repas tuts

Let me see if this computer can get a speedtest (nope I can't... I need Macromedia 9)

Sam...Lol...

I do have something at start up that I don't want to start up...Wink
I'll have to do a screen shot and show Repa..I know I'm on selective start up now but some of those programs like Photo shop and my printer and software...I checked it out with Spy Sweeper (paid version) and was surprised at how many things show...

Last week before I installed IE7 it wasn't this slow...I don't believe I have any virus's...I sweep and clean more than most ...Just got done don't an anti-virus sweep and have Spy Sweeper set to sweep 3 times a week...I sometimes do a sweep if I download as well...Just think it's what starting up when I boot up in the mornings...I don't seem to have any problems during the day otherwise...Even with lots of windows opened..

As far a Charter..they have 3 different speeds..I believe I had the middle one but since my partner in crime here has been going down to Cable ranting and raving about the changes in prices/ As well as changing my name to his and finding better packages that only last a few months for say $77.00 a month everything included plus a few premium channels and access to on demand..meaning I can watch or look for a movie on HBO, Stars and Cinemas (anytime) plus other crap...It's possible they have lowered my speed..Not sure what I have...Don't know how to find that out either on my computer? The bill I know is $25...a month for Internet...Now we are paying $114..a month for all..These packages they advertise are only for a few months 3-6..I didn't mind paying the $77..including HBO, Cinemas and Stars and the internet...

Oh well I'll think of something...Smile They are now offering the phone service, internet and premium channels for $90..a year..but I don't need the long distance phone..I guess premium channels are included...

Maybe Verizon will send someone over to install..One of my mail reason for not going with them..I did look it up on the internet but they send the modems via snail mail.so I would have to hook it up myself..not sure I can do that..or if the speed is any different than what I have now..If so I do think it's less expensive..Just wondering about the speed...

Take care..It seems like I've been writing this for a while and lost some info and had to edit this...cyberspace for ya..

If you are on cable, you can get inconsistent results depending on the time of day. As more users get on your line, your bandwidth decreases, and your download and upload rates suffer as the # of users increases. You may notice decreases in performance after people get home from work during the week, and on weekends. Best performance is usually after midnight. It also depends on the server load at the sites you visit. Distance isn't as much of a factor as the other 2. This doesn't happen nearly to the same degree with DSL, as you have your own, dedicated line with DSL, whereas you are sharing the same line with others on cable. The more dense the population of cable users in your neighborhood is, the more impact that has.

If you haven't gone through Sticky  #11 in the tutorials forum, you may find that will help some. If you are frequently experiencing slower rates with cable than your ISP advertises and you can get DSL, I'd recommend it. I love it! My ISP advertises 1536Kbps download and I get pretty consistent results, regardless of time of day here. The main variable is server load at the test sites. To illustrate, below are 3 tests, one close by on the eastern seaboard, one in the middle of the country, and one at the far end of the country on the northwestern seaboard (note that the best download rate is not obtained at the closest test site, but the results from all 3 test sites are pretty consistent with each other):

You can get much faster DSL speeds in some areas, depending on your distance from your ISP's closest sub-station. I live in a small rural community and this is the fastest that is available to me at this time.

I won't show mine just now. Let's just say it is too unbelievable for me. I did it at 1am and it was high.  I just did it and it was even higher.  I have HighSpeed Comcast.  These numbers were way over what I had in Ft Lauderdale. I will check again later.
