Yep, I don't want a beta version on my computers. Better to wait until it is an official and critical update.

Believe me, I have no intention of adding anything to my computer unless is it necessary.  Especially changes to the OS.

Reading back on this I can't say for sure now if I have it or not...No Repa I don't have any special influence with Bill Gates...Wink...possibly Kim does...
You know her...Wink

I just checked the help about IE and didn't see Service Pack 3 listed as being installed...I do have Office Pro installed so possibly some of the updates were for that...

I'm not one to install anything beta...not anymore...plus I've done some restore, uninstalls and restore back...Jane you know that feeling...I'm guessing I just got updates for Office Pro...I did see some custom updates but they didn't look important so I left them alone...

If I can't find it I'll cancel it...

Here's the thread, Sheila:

http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore/geeksmore-about1840.html?highlight=sp3

As I mentioned in replying to your PM, I would advise against updating to SP3 for now. Updates for SP2 aren't going away, and the reviews for SP3 are not good overall - too many problems are mentioned by too many users for me to trust this service pack. Fay said she downloaded it without problems, but I think with no noticeable improvement in performance either. I'd be curious to know how she feels about it now that she's had it for awhile?

Sheila,

I have SP3, but I will neither recommend or  discourage it.  I think Repa still discourages it and did post some links to articles about problems with it - not sure where those links are.

Fay,

I just happened to catch Repa through a PM...He suggested I cancel it...
It can as an automatic update...I hit advance so I could see what was updating. If not it would have updated automatically...

With my computer in the state it is now I am really trying to be careful...
I downloaded Spybot the day before yesterday. I planned on getting rid of it today...I don't want it to start up during my reboots or start up...I think I found the solution in the advanced options..I felt like I was on dial up this morning...of course it was scanning...Everything is alright now..I have not rebooted again so I'll have to wait ...I read the help and it didn't make a lot of sense for some thing..Some yes...I get into trouble with the advanced options but the wizard was slower than my computer at download of Spybot...so I didn't know...I know you must be confused on this one...

Serive Pack 3 says to make a restore point before downloading it...I did click on the link in this thread...

Thanks, hugs

It must be my lucky day today...Wink

I cancelled the download...I can always get it at a later time...The reviews were not good. A couple of them went alright but the majority of geeks did not see a difference or did not like it at all...

I'm glad I check to see what update it was...otherwise it would have updated automatically...Who knows it could have helped. I would rather wait until I decide...

I do have Service pack 3 for my Office Pro Updates...Yea Kim has lots of influence with Bill Gates...but she doesn't share them with me...

Received this in a newsletter from HP today. Kind of interesting. It seems now everyone has to make a patch for SP3 to work.

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs -  About Windows XP Service Pack 3

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature.
CAUTION:  If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors .

For more information, the following support articles from the Microsoft Web site can help:
322389 - How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack (in English)
936929 - Release notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (in English)
NOTE:  One or more of the links above will take you outside the Hewlett-Packard Web site. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site.

I'm very puzzled why you would want to get rid of Spybot, Sheila. This program gives you a lot of protection without hogging resources. The resident shield should be left on, but teatimer should be turned off. Teatimer does take resources and can be very annoying. If teatimer is what is bothering you, turn it off, but leave Spybot on your system and update it regularly. Spybot, in combination with Spywareblaster, gives you a lot of protection without hogging system resources.

To turn off teatimer, run Spybot and on the menu bar select Mode > Advanced Mode. Then, select Resident in the left-hand column. In the window that appears to the right, make sure that "Resident Teatimer" is unchecked, but leave "Resident SD Helper" checked.

Repa,

I saw this a little too late. Sad

Everything seemed to be running fine (except hitting F2 at start up) until I downloaded Spybot. I have SpySweeper paid version and I'm not sure if that interfered with Spybot or not?
Anyway I did a system restore to get rid of it because for some reason it didn't want to uninstall.

I also went to msconfig to stop some things from starting when windows starts but on the System Tab one of the essential Microsoft Programs is not checked and I'm not sure how to check it to start...I tried. Is there a secret for this fix?

BTW...Thanks for all your help. As you know I'm very busy and not much time for my computer or quiet time to think straight...

Another problem when I change my settings Display Properties System Tab; Rainy Day comes back on a reboot or start up. I can't seem to keep Windows Classic or Windows Standard on the second drop down box. The funny thing when I had Spybot I was able to keep these settings...Crazy Computer don't you think...

Maybe I should dl Service Pack 3 what's the worst that could happen. Wink
I need Kim to come home...

Have a nice day...I just wanted to let you know what has been going on...

Hi everyone sorry I haven't been around much. I'm missing all of you...

Well, normally Spyware programs don't interfere with each other like anti-virus programs do, but I suppose it's possible. If SpySweeper has the same protections as Spybot, you could turn Spybot's resident shield off and just use it as an extra scanner.

I also went to msconfig to stop some things from starting when windows starts but on the System Tab one of the essential Microsoft Programs is not checked and I'm not sure how to check it to start...I tried. Is there a secret for this fix?

Which program is not checked? Is the checkbox there but unchecked, or is the checkbox shaded so you can't check it? Exactly what did you do that didn't work?

Hmmm, did you at one time save Windows Classic as Rainy Day.theme?
