Earlier this month when I was using the Media Player, a dialog box appeared saying there was an update, so I installed it.  In Add/Remove programs, it has Windows Media Player 11.

In this month's Windows Update, for High-Priority Security Update,
it has Windows Media Player 6.4 KB 925398.  I googled this KB but could not make anything of it.

I am puzzled because of the '11' in the Add/Remove programs and the '6.4' in Windows Update.  Does this mean 6.4 version 11?  Is it o.k. to install this update?

Hi Ingrid

Alright its been a while since I've answered a computer question besides a slow pc.

Thats 6.4 KB which stands for 6.4 Kilo (thousand) Bytes (eight bits). There are 8 bits "small (b)" in a byte.

I know all of this sounds confusing right now but you'll come to understand it. The windows media 11 is the version number. The next version will be windows media 12. Unless they change their name.

The 6.4 KB is the file size which is very small. So I'm assuming its an update for your windows media 11. Do get it as its most likely a security update.

Some may disagree with me but I always accept all updates to my files. Especially security ones as that will keep your computer safe.

There are optional updates in the Windows Update site. You can find out if you need or can use those updates by checking out the information provided.

Here is a link that will explain about file sizes and stuff. It may sound a little technical but in time you will come to understand all of this.

In control panel / automatic updates you can set the updates to automatically install. You then don't have to worry about missing one or delaying a critical update. If you ever want to uninstall an update you can do so in install / uninstall programs.

Ingrid,
you can set it so it will download them automatically, and then notify you, so you can install them at your own leisure, one by one. That's how I have it set. Then I don't miss any, but I still have control over the install.

This Windows Media player  11 was actually made for the Vista system rather than for the XP OS, but will work with XP.
