When I started up my computer this morning I got a black screen with writing...almost looked liked I was in safe mode..
It said something like this...showed the computer settings I thought I might be in Bio's but not...Then at the bottom it said hit F2 to continue and F1 to start setup..I think I hit F2 to continue because I had no idea of what setup meant...
Then I got on the board and automatic downloads started...Usually I have to click to start the downloads...It downloaded by itself ...It booted and I got that black screen once more and had to hit F2...
This has never happened to me before...I have not rebooted I just wanted to ask if this is something that has happened for a reason????
I have a feeling when I reboot it will show again...I'll let you know the next time ...I think I'll do it now to be sure...
Thanks, _________________

Runs the scans in safe mode first.... if the scans do not find anything I would restore to a prior date.
But wait on What Repa has to say... meanwhile run the scans _________________

URGGGGH...I rebooted and it came up again...I scan all the time so this I can't figure out why this is happening...
The screen gives the computer information but this is what it says at the bottom...
Primary Master Hard Dish S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad
Warning immediate Backup you data and replace you hard disk drive
A failure maybe imminent
Press F2 to continue F1 to enter Setup
I pressed F2 to continue as I am not sure what Setup means...then the computer started normally...This screen comes inbetween HP blue screen and Welcome to Windows
I have no idea of what is going on...I checked my computer and not many error..right click computer & manage...
Screenshot not sure if this helps..

Pressing F1 for Setup will take you into the bios setup screen. You don't need to go there now.
Restore you computer back to 2 days ago (don't use the most recent restore point). When your computer reboots, if that screen comes up, copy down word for word everything it says. Then, go ahead and hit F2 to get to windows. Once there:
1. Post what you copied down from the error message you got on that screen in this thread. Then....
2. Backup any data that is important to you in case the message about your hard drive is correct (I thought you just got a new one recently?).
Then do the following:
1. Go to My Computer and right-click on your C:\ drive. Select Properties from the pop-up menu that appears.
2. On the Properties window, select the Tools tab, and under Error-Checking click the “Check now Button.” The “Check Disk” window will appear.
3. In the Check Disk window you will see 2 check boxes:
a. Automatically fix file system errors
b. Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
Check both boxes and click Start.
If at any point you get a message telling you something like you need to reboot in order for it to continue or fix errors it finds, and gives you the option to reboot, do so. Let it do whatever it is asking your permission to do.
This process could take awhile, 1 or 2 hours wouldn’t be unusual. If it finds and fixes stuff, great. Any prompts you get, let it do whatever it wants to do.
If you have more than one partition, do the above for each one.
Try rebooting and see if your problem is fixed. _________________ Repa

Repa,
Thank You. I understand everything but: If you have more than one partition but one, do the same for each one. ??? What do you mean partitions? Or what are partitions? I put that screen shot so you would know or get an idea or what drives I have.
I can remember what you told me to do. I tried to copy and paste into Notepad but it was non responsive...I will give it another try it once tonight...If I can't print it out don't worry I get it...Do the restore point first and hopefully it will fix the problem...or keep my fingers crossed... ...they are...
When I reboot tomorrow I will write down everything on the screen...
I wish I could remember the order of windows starting and which screen showed first at start up. It looked normal but somewhere in between the normal start up windows that black screen (almost looking like safe mode but not) then I believe the next screen that showed was Windows XP...I guess that isn't important as the start up was normal except for that screen that shouldn't have been there...
I've noticed when I replied to an email it took me a long time to reply...I feel like I was on dial up extra slow...Too bad I can't take a screen shot of that page....It did not look like an error page at all except what I read at the bottom of the message and posted. I also thought F12 was the key for the Bios.
I did get a new hard drive about a year and a half ago. I think around September 2006. It crashed in Feb of 2007 and my tech friend switched the old hard drive and put the new one in as my back up drive G...He was able to wipe the old hard drive clean and reuse it...Drive C..
I know because Norton expired this Feb and I installed Avast...So a year from Feb last year until now I've had pretty good luck...I babied it since and have tried not to dl anything I didn't need...It has been a learning experience with this particular computer for sure...I'll never buy a new reconditioned computer again or a HP...Lol...I was naive at that time and thought I was getting a good deal...Not...I could have bought one from Staples right out of the box for the same price...I know I paid over $800 with out the monitor plus tax...gurrr...live and learn...
Anyway I wanted to thank you for all your help...I'll start tomorrow it's been a long day and I'm much too tired tonight to tackle this...
Thank you...Sorry for all the babbling... _________________

Sheila, that screen shot wasn't showing when I read your post earlier. Sometimes the images aren't showing in the posts - seems to be happening more frequently lately. Anyway, do what I posted above on your C: and G: drives. You should be running on the newest hard drive - did I understand you correctly that you are still running Windows on the old hard drive?
Don't forget to copy and post that error message word for word if it appears again when you are rebooting. And don't forget to backup your important data and image files while you still can. _________________ Repa

Repa,
Yes you understood me correctly...The old drive is now my C drive...the new one crashed and he switched it, so he made it my back up drive which is G drive...I did take most of the programs off of it because my scans were taking hours 5 or 6 when I had Norton...So I was hoping it would be less time...Not really...So if I had to switch drives..I would have to install some things I deleted..Unless they back up automatically...my pictures do for sure...So I don't need to back them up...

If windows are the program files then yes ...my C drive...Which is where I go to start menu program files...
I'm glad you mentioned to do the G drive (back up drive) for checking for bad sectors...I would have just done the C drive...
Do I have to do anything with HP Recovery D drive?
Sorry the screen shot doesn't show...I can see it just fine...Maybe I should have made it smaller...sorry about that...
Let us hope this is just a glitch and not a big problem...I think all my questions are asked...
The computer seems to be running quite well right now...I had problems when I started my all in one to print out these instructions...I believe I did not wait long enough before hitting print...
I'll either shut down tonight or maybe leave it on and do a reboot in the morning..I haven't quite decided...I am a little afraid it might not start up again...
I'm so tired I'm probably not making much sense...We will get it done...
Thank you very much Repa...Linda and Samantha too...sorry I didn't answer but I was in a hurry as I had appointments to make...I appreciate your input...
Have a nice evening, _________________

I don't think so, not at this time. To scan it with disk check, we would use a command prompt. Let's see what happens after you restore back to 2 days before this happened, and then run check disk on C: and G:

I can see it fine too, it must have just been a problem when I first read your post. Seems the images at postimage.org have been doing this more and more lately.

Repa,
This is what my tech friend did with my drive last year in February...2007
Yes - Your older drive that failed before) is now your Windows System disk and the newer disk is the Data Disk G ...back up now
Lasst time you had a disk failure there were disk read errors in the "System Event Log".
I just thought this might help you understand why he did the switch...
I can't do this until later on today hopefully...I wanted to tell you so you don't worry...I'll post wen I'm going to start....
Thank you, Have a nice day...I will check in later after all my errans are done... _________________

It was not clear to me what was going on until I read your email:
| Quote: |
This is the D drive which is Hp Recovery drive...I just decided to check and see how far it went back. Right-Click My Computer > Manage > Expand "Event Viewer" > select "System" and look for errors. I can’t do the restore this afternoon. I thought this might be helpful to you. I guess this has been happening since 3/17/08 or maybe earlier.
Because PostImage isn’t showing very well I decided to send this in an email...Is this something that might help with a restore before the 17th? I can wait until you post on the board. I have a busy day today and tomorrow...It might go back further than the 17th but this is as much as I’m able to check back |
This is a pretty good indication that your hard drive may be dying. It could go tomorrow, or it could last for another year - no way to know. Since you are having other problems, i.e., you did mention something about notepad not responding and very slow email? Here's what I would do at this point:
1. This is a hardware error, so restoring your computer isn't going to help. You've been getting those errors for a long time, but I don't know why that screen just started showing now. It is an indication of a serious problem with your hard drive.
2. Back up anything on your C:\ drive that you don't want to lose - favorites, settings, whatever.
3. Run chkdsk from a command prompt on the D:\ drive (a hidden partition on your C:\ drive where hp puts the recovery programs). to do that:
a. Select Start > Run and type cmd in the text box and click ok.
b. A dark screen will appear. Where you see the flashing cursor, type the following:
chkdsk d: /f
and press the Enter key. Note the space between chkdsk and d: and the space between d: and /f.
This could take a long time to run. When running chkdsk, observe the following:
1. To run chkdsk on a fixed disk, you must be a member of the Administrators group.
2. For chkdsk to correct disk errors, you cannot have open files on the drive. If files are open, the following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
If you get this message, type Y and press Enter.
Restart the computer if replying Y doesn't do it for you. As your computer restarts, chkdsk checks the drive and corrects errors automatically. If the drive partition is a boot partition, chkdsk automatically restarts the computer after it checks the drive.
3. Be patient and wait for an indication that chkdsk has ended. It could take several hours.
4. After chkdsk has completed, reboot your system and see if you still get that screen with the error message. Periodically check the event viewer for more errors to appear.
5. If chkdsk fixed errors on D:\, you should also consider going through the same procedure on C:\.
6. I would plan to get a new hdd soon. Maxtor provides a cd with a utility to copy your C:\ drive to the new drive, making it bootable. They also have a good customer support and will walk you through things on the phone if you have questions. You then plug the new drive into where your current C:\ drive is, and it will automatically become the C:\ drive. Other manufacturers probably have a similar utility - but check first. _________________ Repa

Repa.... ....
I can't believe this is happening again to my hard drive. I've had soo much trouble since I bought this computer. I am upset at the moment...sorry...
I'll copy this and do it when I get a chance. If I can't do it I'll look for another computer. I can always send this to my tech friend but I'm getting tired of buying hard drives...The new one I bought crashed a little while after he fixed it...That is when he swiched them and used the old one. He said he wiped it clean the old one and that is what I have as my C drive now. I don't understand why he didn't fix the new one ...that's life...
I did copy that impormation you asked for. I'm not sure if you need it now...If you do I'll type it next time I come here...
I have to go out today. I'll copy this and give it a try soon.
Thank you very much for all your help...I really appreciate it...
You have a great day... _________________

I haven't decided what to do but I wanted to let you know I'm still around.
I guess I'm waiting for the computer to not start and then I'll make a decision.
I did write down what that screen said if you want me to type it out.
Thanks for all your help... _________________
