Fay,
I'm not ok but thought you and the others might want to know what I'm up too. I've been looking at new computer towers...I don't have a clue which one I may buy. I just wrote my computer engineer friend with this problem. At this point I don't care if I lose everything...I guess my mood isn't very good...thanks for asking... _________________

Hi Repa,
Hummmm! I am still not sure what is wrong...I had to uninstall some software that came with my monitor because I was getting application hangs...I believe I need a different cord for that software...when I shut down the screen blinks digital analog..then it shuts down but the light (shut off light) will blink unless I shut it down...I actually think I need another cord to plug into the back of the computer...
The computer still has that same screen just after the HP screen...Here is my problem...or one of them. I know I can get this fixed...I'll just send it over to my friends house...I think it's always a good thing to have a back up computer...It may need a new graphics card..the old monitor and this one...when I shut down It shows a red line in the Windows is shutting down which is the only time I see that line...its almost like there is space which should be filled in...do you understand what I mean????
This is a brand new 22 inch lcd monitor and when I installed the software I could get a beautiful picture...It still is great without the software...
So my problem is what Dell to buy...I see some packages but they come with monitors...so should I keep this and set up two computers...can I use 2 monitors if I buy a Dell with a monitor...
The biggest problem seems to be which Dell is going to suit me...I want a good one...I don't understand what the processor are...I would like 3 GB of memory and a decent hard drive probably 500...I went to Dell.com and looked at a lot of them...Its very confusing they ask to pick from Processor
Intel Core 2 Extreme
Intel Core 2 Quad
Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel Pentium Dual-Core
Intel Celeron
http://www.dell.com/content/products/results.aspx/desktops?c=us&cs=19&dt=SmallGrid&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
This links shows all desktops...another thing I don't understand is the cd and dvd drives...it says they burn cd and dvds...but it doesn't say if they play them...I guess I need some help figuring out what to get...I also wouldn't mind watching a movie...lol... ...Kim likes to see herself from time to time...
BTW...a while ago I lost some money...I just found it so I can afford a pretty nice computer...My computer friend says after 3 years computers are old and opposite... which I don't really agree...I love this one but not the hard drive...crashes...
The error is with my D drive...HP recovery ...I did what you said to try and fix the bad block...It didn't work...I was thinking if I hit F1 instead of F2 to go to set up what would happen...I have all the recovery cds...but with a bad block would that work? Or would it be better to have my friend fix it...I also want to make sure this monitor is compatible with a dell...
Its a Samsung 22 inch SyncMaster 226BW ...
So as you can see I have a problem figuring out what to do or buy...If you wanted a good Dell which would you get? Up to $999... ...a little more if needed...You see I put that money away for a rainy day and it's raining ...well on my computer would be the right way to say where it's raining...
Feeling a little better today and thanks for asking...You picked the right day to ask...Oh! If I hadn't bought this monitor I would have picked up a nice Dell with a 22 inch monitor at Staples the other day...of course I don't know how to set up a new computer....
Gees I haven't talked this much in a long time...
Thank You my friend who is older than dirt...don't worry I'm right behind you...I'm almost as old as dirt...
Have a nice day... _________________

Sheila, no, you don't need a different cord - it's working just fine! It is normal for a Samsung to have the power button light blink after your computer shuts down and it will continue to blink until you turn your computer back on unless you power off the monitor.
You can get a Dell with or without a monitor, choose your processor, Ram size, hard drive size, etc., by configuring the purchase for what you want in the computer. Take a look at this one:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspndt_530?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&~oid=us~e n~29~inspndt_530_anav4~~
The difference in Intel Single Core, Dual Core and Quad Core is explained here:

Note that you can configure this computer anyway you want. All you do is click on the Customize Button and follow the prompts to choose the options you want for your computer configuration.
The difference in the various processors available is explained here:
http://www.intel.com/en_US/Consumer/Learn/Processors/index.htm
This computer comes with the following for the price stated on the webpage with the $100 discount:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4600 (2MB L2 Cache,2.4GHz,800 FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition
19 inch SE198WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel Monitor
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
1GB3 Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs
500GB2 Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
1Yr In-Home Service,4 Parts + Labor,1 24x7 Phone Support
You can get the faster Intel Core 2 Quad processor (in terms of computing power and multi-tasking) for an additional $50. You will have to decide if your needs justify the extra money. The quad comes in handy if you are a serious gamer. It won't speed up your browsing, although it might help some with image processing in Photoshop Elements.
You can choose to not get a monitor, which saves you $170.00.
I suggest you go with Windows XP Home and do not get one with Windows Vista, but that is your choice. Vista is a bust with problems, and may be replaced sometime next year by Windows 7 - see this article:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9911470-56.html
I have little doubt that XP support will be available until Windows 7 and beyond.
The DVD drive will burn and play both CDs and DVDs.
It comes with 1GB RAM. You can select 3GB RAM for an extra $100 - well worth the price!
It comes with a 500GB ATA hard drive - just what you wanted!
I would not get the Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 - that is tied to your motherboard. If you have to replace it, you also have to replace the motherboard. Get the NVIDIA GeForce 8300GS 128MB card instead for an extra $60.
I would get the 3yr warranty instead of going with the 1 yr included warranty. That will cost you an extra $170.00 - well worth it if anything should go wrong in the first 3 years. They will usually replace failed hardware the next business day.
The computer doesn't come with speakers. You will need them if you want to hear anything. I would go with the Dell A525 30 Watt 2.1 Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer for an extra $50. A cheaper pair is available for $30.
The suggested changes above (if you choose the Core 2 Quad processor)will bring that computer's price to $939.00. Shipping is free for 3-5 day delivery and taxes will bring the total to just over $1000.
The above are just suggestions - things I would consider if I were buying another Dell.
If you want to get your current computer working as a backup, I suggest you let your friend do it if he knows what he is doing, and save yourself the time and grief that the stress of doing it yourself will bring. _________________ Repa

Repa,
Well I answered this and when I hit submit I had to log back in...
I'll make it shorter this time...
Thanks for helping me decide as well as understanding...
Windows 7 coming out makes it a little difficult ...I sure don't want to get one now and have problems or an obsolete computer...
I have speakers now so that isn't a problem...I put a sound card in myself a while back...I also sent you an email with a screen shot of error messages with Avast..computer management Anti virus...It maybe nothing but I thought you might want to take a look...It maybe something to do with my present problems...Looks like it also could be a conflict between Spy Sweeper and Avast...Of course it might just be not finding a file to scan...
The most important thing I wanted to say was thank you very much for all you time and help...
I have a decision to make soon...I'll keep you posted...
Have a great day and do as I said in that email...
I bet I got everyone thinking...
God Bless, _________________

I wouldn't worry about that now. Windows 7 was originally scheduled for 2010, but Vista is such a bust they are trying to accelerate it's debut. Don't count on it, however (have they ever delivered on schedule?), and I'm sure XP will still be around and supported 3 years from now. I know I'm not going to get Windows 7 when it first comes out - will wait until we get reviews and let others test it and deal with the early problems.
I don't think it is a real problem - looks like Avast can't open the files you showed in the error message dialog box because Spy Sweeper is using them. I would check to see if you have any quarantined items in Spy Sweeper and delete them if you do, and delete all the Spy Sweeper log files. Then, reboot into Safe Mode, login to the Administrator account and run your Avast scan from there - you'll have to manually start it from Start > All Programs..... In safe mode in the Administrator account, Spy Sweeper will not be automatically started and running, and neither will a lot of other stuff - only those applications that Windows needs bare bones to run. That should allow Avast to access most files that it cannot in Normal Mode because something else is using the file. This should resolve most issues you were having and not understanding. If you still get something you don't understand, write down the error message or whatever it is that it asks you about what you want to do, and post it.
Have a great day and do as I said in that email...
I bet I got everyone thinking...
Sheila! Are you sure that you really want me to do that?!!!
Now, I bet we've really got 'em thinking!

Repa,
I wanted to let you know how things stand now. The new computer is not an option at this point. I am glad I waited.
I haven't done this as of yet: Repa said
| Quote: |
a. Select Start > Run and type cmd in the text box and click ok.
b. A dark screen will appear. Where you see the flashing cursor, type the following:
chkdsk d: /f
and press the Enter key. Note the space between chkdsk and d: and the space between d: and /f. |
When you say Note the space between chkdsk and the d: and the space between d: and /f It should be typed exactly that way with the space?
This is really the only question I need answered if I were to do it at this moment I would type it chkdsk d: /f
All in all if that window didn't appear at start up my computer is working just fine...You mentioned it could last a year so maybe my luck will change...In any case I'm thankful for your help as well knowing I have someone close by if I need him to fix this...
My best wishes to you and Mrs Repa always, _________________
