I sincerely hope that I don't have a major problem!! Our desktop computer is an HP running Windows XP. I'm not sure of the model number, but when we got it, it had XP on it already; we didn't upgrade at all. My point is, it's not all that old. I'm writing this from my laptop computer. I turned on the desktop computer this morning (the switch has been touchy, so I barey touched it to turn it on), and it turned on and got to the Users screen, I tried to move the mouse to log me on, but it wouldn't move, so I was just going to restart the computer, but it wouldn't turn back on.
My question is does anyone have an idea of what is wrong? Could it just be a bad switch and the mouse thing was just a coincidence? _________________

Ruth, here is Microsoft's troubleshooting webpage:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/support/nostart.mspx
Select the link they give on this page that best matches your problem - most likely the one that says:
"Your computer does not turn on."
Sounds like it could be a powr supply problem or perhaps a faulty on/off button. _________________ Repa

Thanks for the link Repa! You were correct, it is the page that says "Your computer does not turn on". It does sounds like it could be the switch. I was an electronic technician for over 10 years, so I have a multi-meter and checked that voltage is coming out of the power cord, plus there is a clock plugged into the same outlet strip that is working just fine . I physically can't get down to probe the power switch, but it sounds as if that's likely candidate.
Thank-you!!!!! _________________

Sorry to say, it doesn't look like the switch. Things are pointing to the motherboard. Big !!!! We have to take in to get looked and maybe fixed, so I'll keep everyone up-to-date. _________________

I'm writing this from the desktop computer! We took it in yesterday, and Repa was right, it WAS the power supply! Thank goodness that it wasn't the motherboard after all!! I guess that I had convinced myself of a very bad scenario...maybe preparing myself for the "worst".
Thanks for your help Repa!!!! What would we do without you?
Now, I can be taken off of the "list" of people with sick computers!! _________________

Glad you got yours fixed.
I am still waiting to get mine back.
At least I have this old one. Can't do much on it, but can get onto the internet and get my e-mail at least.
