Seems like there are a number of us here experincing computer woes.  I now join the crowd.  My computer is in the hospital Smile.  RIght now I am on an OLD computer I had.  One I bought used quite some time ago.  It is win 98 and very slow.  Sometimes it works and sometimes when I try to bring it up - the video is garble.d - small bolocks of color - flashing.  It is a mini tower - I opened the case to try to see if the card was loose, but it is very difficult to see anything in the small case, from what I could see it looks like on-board video.  I  blew it out with canned air and  hooked it up again and it worked ok, but not sure about next time.

My main comptuer was getting intermitent bsod screens.  And also - would seem to lose the hard drive, After I would re-boot things would work ok for a while then it would happen agian.  I really don't have the energy to mess with it - so I took it to the shop.  Not sure If i'll get if fixed or go ahead and get a new one.  I had the hard drive crash last year and concidered getting a new one then but to save money just had the hard drive replaced.  The computer is 5 years old  and I hate to start being out more money on it -  So not sure if I'll get if fixed or get a new one.  I don't have energy either to mees with a lot of reserach on what is available- I know I shojld -but it is just not going to happend.  The guy at the shop is  dell reseler - if I get a new one I may just get one from him - but waiting to see what he finds about the old one and what he has available.  I think he did say I could still get one with xp maybe - or xp pro -  I don't hink I want  VISTA.

I think he said the ones he sells comes with 2 g of memory which should be fine for xp pro - I only have 1 now.  But,  I will probaly have the computer for a while, and when VISTA replacement comes out - I may want to upgrade the OS.  If I do get one - I may want to see about going ahead and getting additional memory.  Anyone having suggestions for how much I might want thinkiing about the possibility of an upgrade.  Probaly can't answer this - since there is probably no way of knowing what might be reqired for the next os.

Mainly jsut wantd people to know what is happening in case I am gone for a few days.  I may be able to use this old coputer to get on - but might not be able to get it up some times.

We are in the same boat again Fay....although Repa did explain about the new ones and suggestions on what I might get if I buy a new one. This is doing alright and I was thinking of maybe getting it fixed but will have to email my tech friend and see what he thinks...I'm rather attached to this and hate to see it go...So I'm still trying to decide too...Good Luck to both of us...

Sheila,

I don't know what I want to do,  I kind of go back and forth.  In one way I think I would like to go ahead and get a new one now while I am still working - and can still get xp pro.  But I don't know.  As I told you, you can probably watch what I do and do the opposiite Smile

I still do not know if I will get a new computer or not, but I spent just a little time looking at dell website.  I need a parallel port and it looks like to get one I will need to get one of their business computers.

One that I was looking at had a couple of choice for the video: the build in adapter or a 256MB ATI Radeon card.  Does anyone know anything about that video card?

Ladies, I really am sorry for your problems.  i probably shouldn't be in this thread because it might be contagious. Question  I am knocking o wood while typing.  I sympathize with you all, but this will be my last contact in this thread.  My computer (knock on wood) is just fine right now.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!! OnPC

I just talked to the guy working on my computer.  He said the disk drive will have to be repalced.  It is underwarrany which is good but it also means I'll have to wait several days, maybe a week or longr to get it all taken card of.  THis should not have happened.  It is a seagate and only a year old.

Fay,

Strange because the new C drive I bought was a Seagate as well. It didn't last quite as long as yours before it crashed...Which is the reason Vern wiped the  old one clean and used that one...Maybe he wiped the Seagate clean as its my back up drive now...

Shoot the hard drives  Die PC than get them fixed....Wink

Well mine is holding on quite well...Repa did say it might last a year so maybe my luck has changed...doubt it but....Soon I'll call Vern and ask him if I should get this fixed...It seems a lot of people with Vista are having problems with their computers...Keeping my fingers crossed that my F2 key keeps working at start up...Smile

Sheila & Fay,

Our desktop computer is an HP and when it was only 6 months old, we had to have the hard drive replaced! GRRR! Luckily, it was under warranty! That's one that has the maybe major problem, but it has Windows XP.

My laptop is a Dell and *knock on wood*, so far, so good. (I shouldn't jinx myself!)It is running Vista. So, who knows...

Ruth,

thanks for explaining that to me. I wasn't sure which one you were having trouble with...I wouldn't get another HP as I've had too much trouble with this one...

A dell when I decide to get a new one...Good luck with getting it fixed if possible...Grrrr...know the feeling...

At least Fay's is in the hospital...I haven't gotten that far yet...

Keeping the fingers crossed...
