Hi,
If one does not download music off the internet, is there any reason to keep itunes? Does it enhance anything else? _________________ Thanks!!

Only if you have an Ipod
To be honest, I really don't know but I don't think there would be a conflict.
My computer did not come with Itunes, during the automatic updates of some Apple software I have (QuickTime) I allowed it... who knows... I am contemplating in getting an Ipod
Anyway... I don't think you should have a problem, as Apple themselves have the instructions on removing iTunes

Hey Repa,
itunes is taking up 72.59MB space, do you know of any reason to keep itunes? Do you have to have it in order for Quicktime to work? Does itunes serve any purpose other than for music?
I'd appreciate your take on this.! _________________ Thanks!!

Since you can download Quicktime 7.5 without Itunes here
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
I would assume that Itunes is not needed for Quicktime to work. You can try uninstalling Itunes, and if Quicktime doesn't work, you can get Quicktime 7.5 with Itunes at the same link above. _________________ Repa

Repa,
1) Since I asked about itunes, I clicked on >Start>AllPrograms>itunes to check it out. A window opened to Accept the terms of itunes, as if I don't have it on my computer.? I assumed that it is on my computer, since in Add/Remove programs it showed itunes is taking up 72.59MB space. What gives? Do I have it, or what's the 72.59MB mean?
2) Several years ago I used to listen to some radio online.
I googled bluegrass gospel stations tonight. It appears that there's no free ones out there any more. I clicked on the first one listed, that SiteAdvisor gave the green light to, to see if I could listen. Well, a small window appeared at the top of the page. It was wanting me to buy the music or something, anyway, I tried to close the window, but, it would not close. I used to close stubborn sites, such as this, by holding down Alt, & F4, on the keyboard, at the same time. Didn't work this time. I finally had to log off to get it closed.
How does one close these sites, in this day& age, without having to log off to close it? _________________ Thanks!!

If you opened Itunes for the first time, you may have to accept some agreement before you are actually allowed to use it, would be my guess. I've never used Itunes.
To close an application (or browser window) that is stubborn, open the task manager (Ctrl > Alt > Delete) and End Task from there on either the Applications tab or the Processes tab, depending on what it is. _________________ Repa

Yes... this happen to me too... but I did not continue as I am not ready to use itunes
To close an application (or browser window) that is stubborn, open the task manager (Ctrl > Alt > Delete) and End Task from there on either the Applications tab or the Processes tab, depending on what it is.
Also, choose to work offline and clean the Cache. If it is still stubborn remove the Internet USB plug. |

What about http://loudcity.com/stations/solid-rock-gospel or http://www.solidrockgospel.com/ or http://www.live365.com/stations/kahfluie
these are the first 3 listed on mine... the last one has Ads by c8.zedo.com but as I have "Host files" installed I do not get or see them.
Repa & I have been "plugging" the use of the Host files system as Ads can really do harm to the computers.
Just look at these screen shots.
This one shows clearly that I can see no Ads
Yet it is blocking 4... in which I can see by clicking on my "Back link" - if I am to click on "back link" it will show me the quantity of Ads it is Blocking - yet, if I click backwards the browser does nothing - because the Host Files tells the browser to not recognize it
All these Gospel Sites appears green in Site Advisor but many things "piggy back" on the Ads... using the "Hosts Files" system you can block these Ads - These Ads could be the cause that your browser "stalled" in the first place
If you have not yet installed, but you are interested in the Host Files see this thread http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore/geeksmore-about1398.html - however I do not recommend it for Vista as yet _________________

Hey, Sam,
That's the station/Site, you show in your Screenshots, that stalled my computer!
1) How difficult is it to install the Hosts file System?
2) How long does it take to install?
3) Also, does it work well with FireFox, that's all I use anymore?
4) And, Does anybody know if itunes does anything besides let you download music? Does it have anything to do with games, or listening to the online radio stations? If the answer is "NO", I'll probably get rid of it. _________________ Thanks!!

WC... I had a feeling, that is why I wanted to point out the Host Files to you - c8.zedo.com are floating Ads
Get the Host Files you will feel safer, another good thing to point out is that it will block undesirable sites as well. So for those who play games and like free things the Host Files will block you from what they have listed as bad sites.

| iTunes is an application that allows the user to manage audio and video on a personal computer. While iTunes is required to manage the audio of an Apple iPod portable audio player, users do not need to own an iPod to use iTunes. Users can organize their music into playlists within one or more libraries, edit file information, record Compact Discs, copy files to a digital audio player, purchase music and videos through its built-in music store, download free podcasts, back up songs onto a CD or DVD, run a visualizer to display graphical effects in time to the music, and encode music into a number of different audio formats. There is also a large selection of free internet radio stations to listen to. |
A - JĮ... you see... (I am still debating on an iPod or a Shuffle) _________________

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Be sure to read all of the directions first, and follow the instructions for disabling the DNS Client after you have loaded the new Host file.
Be sure you update your Hosts file periodically. You can sign up for an email notification of when the Hosts file entries are updated.
b]Note:[/b] Another way to get similar results is with Spybot. That may be the method to chose if you are not comfortable with the procedure in the link (WC, that is what you are currently doing when you run Spybot). But, if you can follow the procedure in the above link, that is preferred. _________________ Repa

Yeah, Sam, I clicked the link from Repa's post, but, there's so much on the page, I'm unsure where the link is to download Hosts.
Are these the ones I'm looking for??
For all other Questions, Issues and Solutions - see: The HOSTS File FAQ
For detailed Download and Extract Instructions - see: Download Help
Repa: I think I would be better off with Hosts, if I can get it done. _________________ Thanks!!
