Repa,
My wife was complaining that she hates Avast. She says since I put it on computer she gets a lot of "Server Not Found" when surfing. She blames Avast. I've recently gotten a lot of those"Server Not Found" notices also, but, I didn't equate them to being caused by Avast.
My question is could Avast be the cause of "Server Not Found", maybe because of some of the 'Settings"? I would attribute it to our ISP, but, I don't know. What's your take on this? _________________ Thanks!!

I can't see how Avast would have anything to do with it, and really don't know what would be causing it. What websites do you experience this with? _________________ Repa

I didn't think so either. But, that's what she thinks.
Some of the sites are, she was trying to get to our Banking tonight, & said she had to try several times. As for me, I've even had it to happen here at Geeks. It would be mostly late at night, trying to open various threads. Finally I would give up and turn off computer.
All, I could think of is the my AT&T/Bellsouth DSL ISP would be the cause. I told her I didn't suspect Avast could be the cause, but, said that I would ask you to see if you would know the cause.? _________________ Thanks!!

No, I don't know - it could be your ISP. I am suddenly getting the same thing in IE when I try to go to imageshack, but I can get there fine in Firefox. I'm investigating that now. This kind of problem is very difficult to troubleshoot. _________________ Repa

Repa,
Just turned the computer on for the first time today, and I am getting a whole lot of "Problem Loading Page, Server Not Found", as I mentioned when I first posted this. At these times, I have to try 3-4 times, to get the page to load, if at all. Very annoying.
The only thing that makes me think that Avast was the cause, is like my wife said, this started after installing Avast. I hope it is not Avast, I like it.
My question for you, Could it possibly be that my settings could cause this? Got any thoughts? _________________ Thanks!!

Hi Wc,
Did you install the Host files?
If you did, this would happen when visiting a no-no site _________________

Maybe it's his proxy if he has one. I know from when I used to use advant I had problems with the inbuilt proxy thing and it was a some gun to get to work,...I'd get allot of time outs and stuff like your saying. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

No, Sam, I haven't gotten around to it yet. This happens when I'm checking my email, as an example. _________________ Thanks!!

Just wanted to touch base on this. It seems that my computer works ok until the PM. I was online about 9:30 PM last night and was having connection problems.
I just don't know what I can do about this? Hope someone has a clue? _________________ Thanks!!

Most likely your ISP, or if you are on cable, you are probably losing bandwidth due to other people getting on, as you share the same connection with others in your area when you are on cable. Call your ISP and tell them about it and insist that they check it out if this has been a continuing problem for you every night. If it has just been in the last night or 2, they may be working on something, but should be able to tell you about it if they have, and when it will be resolved. _________________ Repa

I hope this post will shed more light on this. I was on youtube listening to some music, when a window opened from Avast! On-Access Scanner. It said, on the right side of the window:
It mentioned something about Instant Messaging, which I don't use. Here's what it said: The provider is currently running Avast on- access, protection is based on so-called resident providers. The resident providers are special modules that are used to protect specific sub-systems of your computer, such as the file system and the mail.
On the left was a kind of box with a scroll bar, and over top of this box it said: Installed Providers. Inside all were Version 4.8-1201. These were 1)Instant Messaging, & it had a box around it, high-lighted in light purple. Under it comes 2)Internet Mail, 3)Network Shield, 4)Outlook/Exchange, 5)P2PShield, 6)Standard Shield, and 7)Web Shield.
I should also tell you that while trying to connect to the different videos, it was slow connectivity. And, the task bar over to the right where the clock is, the task bar became a, or resembles, a stair step, with 2 steps, and the Avast Blue Ball with the (a) on it is gone from the task bar. I should also say that McAfee SiteAdvisor gave a green light for youtube & all the videos.
Is this something to do with my recent connectivity problems? Although, this "Server Not Found" stuff has been happening before I ever went to youtube.
Repa, I hope you know what this all means? _________________ Thanks!!

Not really. That Avast screen has never come on without me initiating it. That is the Avast on access scanner screen with settings for the 7 providers, all of which should be set to High. You should have 2 blue balls in your task bar - one with an "a" and one with an "i" unless you merged them into one ball. What happened after you rebooted - did this stairstep? go away, and did all the icons that were there before return? If not, can you provide me with a screen shot? _________________ Repa

What happened after you rebooted - did this stairstep? go away, and did all the icons that were there before return? Yes, to both questions.
If not, can you provide me with a screen shot? |
I was thinking, as I posted this, this afternoon, that I need to learn how to do the screen shots.
It's just a gut feeling, and I'm probably incorrect, but, I'm thinking that Avast has something to do with my connectivity problems. Of course I have no proof. And, Repa, you are the Guru, & I certainly am not contradicting you. I'm just wondering why the Avast Scanner popped up today. _________________ Thanks!!

Hi WC...
If you want to do a screen shot follow the directions below...I use Microsoft Office so I usually paste directly into an email. You can also save it using Paint or any other editing program...Just to show you how easy it was I just did a screen shot of this page using Paint...
Using Paint I hit File>Save As ...I saved this as JPEG...I usually save as bmp when using paint...
I save as: then I name it such as this one below I saved as Screen shot of Board and I would suggest you save as a bmp...I hope this helps you...
Assume you have an open window: By pressing <Print Screen SysRq> (beside F12) you copy the complete screen to your clipboard; by pressing <Alt>+< Print Screen SysRq> you copy the active window to your clipboard. You can the use ‘Edit’ -> ’Paste> to insert the content of the clipboard in your Word document or Outlook message.
WC...I use AVAST and still can't figure out everything but my computer is so much faster at start up, est...I feel bad I can't help you but I'm still learning it myself...Good Luck and my Warmest Wishes to You and Your family... _________________
