Hey, Repa,
I noticed in Add/Remove Programs that I have 7 Java entries in there. The original entry when it was installed, and several updates. They are taking up space. Do I need to keep all of them, or can I remove some? Do I need to list them in this post? _________________ Thanks!!

You only need the latest update. You can remove all the others. _________________ Repa

Repa; Let me ask this before I remove the excess java updates.
1) I don't know what the difference is, but, I've got 2 different java's. The first version on the list, has a dark blue cup and is named: Runtime Environment 5.0. It has 3 updates listed. As I scroll down the list the top one is:
1) Update 10;
2) then Update 11
3) then Update 9
2) Scroll on down the add/remove page & I come to the version that shows a light blue cup named: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 This version has 5 updates listed as follows:
1) java) (TM) 6 Update 2
2) java) (TM) 6 Update 3
3) java) (TM) 6 Update 5
4) java) (TM) 6 Update 7
5) java) (TM) 6 Update 1
A) I thought I should ask before I removed them. My confusion comes in because it's 2 different versions. Why do I have 2 versions?
B) Adding to my confusion is the fact that they are not in numerical order. Why is that?
C) I would ordinarily think that the update on top of the list, is the latest update, and would, therefore, have the largest number.
D) So, in light of all this above, do I remove all updates except for the largest number, or what should I do?
E) Finally, do you have any updates newer than the ones I've got? _________________ Thanks!!

I had noticed this as well, except I had many versions of Java, that I don't know which are necessary and which are not...
j2se runtime enviroment 5.0 update 11
java tm 6 up date 5
Java se runtime enviroment 6
Java se runtime enviroment 6 update 1
Sun Java system application server platform addition
And I had some kind of Java developers kit, which I did remove.
I don't even have the new up date 7 for java 6
All I really want is to run my groups/forums and go to pogo.com, which I can't even do because pogo tells me I dont have java plug in installed...hahaha.

Remove everything and install Java (TM) 6 Update 7. If you run into problems removing the old Java stuff from Add/Remove programs, there is a way to do it by editing the registry and deleting everything in the Java folder in Program Files, but it is a little tricky. Hopefully, you'll be able to remove all the old stuff from Add/Remove programs. Remove them in reverse order of when they were installed. Then, delete everything left in the Java folder and install Java (TM) 6 Update 7. _________________ Repa

Wait... this is the Vista machine right Sandra?
Vista does not have Add/remove, it has Uninstall
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Quick Tip about Vistas Uninstall
When you want to uninstall something from your Vista computer the rules are different than Windows XP.
In Windows XP its Add/Remove Programs, right?
Vista actually has a new way of doing things when it comes to uninstalls.
When you're ready to uninstall a program, etc. from your Vista computer, here's what you should do from here on out:
Go to Start > Control Panel and then under the Programs section, choose the option that says "Uninstall a program." Once you click on that, you will see a list of programs you have on your computer that can be uninstalled. Each one will have some information next to it as well. For example, you will be able to see the publisher's information (who created the software), when it was installed on your PC and the size of the program.
Once you look over all of that information, just find the program you'd like to uninstall, highlight it and then click on the Uninstall button. It will then go through the uninstall process and the program will be gone. _________________

I noticed I have a lot too:

<a href="http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u260/Pacoavenge/JAVA.jpg" target="_blank">
<img src="http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u260/Pacoavenge/th_JAVA.jpg"></a>

My concern is the larger mb belong to the "removes"? Am I missing something? _________________

I don't know why the updates don't work like updates for other programs, but they don't. However, all you need is the latest update. Remove everything and install Java (TM) 6 Update 7. If you run into problems removing the old Java stuff from Add/Remove programs, there is a way to do it by editing the registry and deleting everything in the Java folder in Program Files, but it is a little tricky. Hopefully, you'll be able to remove all the old stuff from Add/Remove programs (Uninstall a Program in Vista). Remove them in reverse order of when they were installed. Then, delete everything left in the Java folder and install Java (TM) 6 Update 7. You can get the latest version of Java here:

I just checked and it shows I need an update too...This is what it says...
Verifying Java Version
Oops! You don't have the recommended Java installed.
Your Java version is 1.4.2. Please click the button below to get the recommended Java for your computer.
NOTE: If you recently completed your Java software installation, you may need to restart your browser (close all browser windows and re-open) before verifying your installation.
Download Free Java for Windows
Windows Vista, XP, and 2000 Server
Version 6 Update 7
A screen shot would have been better...Do I really need to update this or can I keep what I have?
Thanks, _________________

Thanks, |
Sheila, you are way behind in your updates. You should update to version 6 update 7 asap. Java is something that can be exploited, and you need the latest updates - just like Windows - to prevent Java from being exploited by malicious hackers. _________________ Repa
