I can not get into Safe Mode...I've tried 3 times. I get that same window where I have to hit F2 to continue or F1 to enter Set Up...
From a dead start, what screens do you see and in what sequence before you get that window where you have to hit F2 to continue? Exactly when in this sequence do you start tapping the F8 key? I have to wait for the Azus (Motherboard) screen to disappear before I start tapping F8 to get into Safe Mode or else I'll end up in the Bios setup. On Granny's computer, I don't have to worry about that, I can start tapping the F8 key as soon as startup begins.
Have you tried continually tapping the F8 key immediately after you push the F2 key to continue to see what happens?
I don't know where Set up brings me? I also don't know if I go to F1 Set up if I can get out, or have to set something up. I almost wanted to hit F1 and check it out but thought twice.
Setup takes you to the Bios settings. You don't need to go there, but if you do, you can get out of it.
Is it alright to run CCleaner in Normal Mode...I was going to but thought it might be a good idea to ask first.
If you cannot get into Safe Mode (not a good sign), then run ccleaner in Normal Mode in both the Administrator and Owner accounts. The reason for going into Safe Mode for this and scanning your computer is that only the most essential programs and services are running, and malware is not running.
My thoughts on that Window that comes up after restart where I have to hit F2 to continue just after HP blue Screen appears. From past experiences with hard drive crashes.
What might fix this problem, if you want to tackle it, is to do a repair install, also known as an in-place upgrade of Windows XP. This will repair/replace the Windows System files with those on the CD without losing your current applications, settings and files. You will have to do all the Windows updates again as you will lose those, but that is a minor point if this fixes your problem. If you want to try it, you should backup all your important data and then go here and carefully follow the instructions given in the first post on the page: |

I have tried this once but will give it another try...
The first thing I see at start up: is a moment of black then the blue HP Screen... the Black window with white writing comes next (Sometimes If I hit F2 When HP Blue Screen is showing. I can past that Black window with white writing) then the normal start up windows follows.
I have tried everything you suggested...I tried hitting F8 before the blue HP Screen, during the Blue HP Sceeen & after the F2 screen. Yes I do know how to tap F8 for safe mode...It just does not work now... I will give it a few more tries...

I will run CCleaner in this account...I don't have another account set up...I am Owner, and this is an Administrator Account...(The Administator Account is only seen in Safe Mode)..I have never touched that except to run scans in Safe Mode...

I am not certain which CD you mean. I have a Window's XP Disk...I also have the HP Restore CD disks....
This maybe over my head...Remember I have a Back Up Drive: G Drive...Vern said it would automatically back up for me. (I did remove some Programs Files because scans were taking too long with Norton) that was a long time ago...I know D drive has a bad block...wish I could plug it...
If I right click on My Computer>Manage>Event Viewer>drop down to System...I get the folllowing error properties: The devide.\Device\Harddisk0\D. has a bad block.
I also get error warnings to back up data...I did not write everything down as this has been going on for a long time...basically the same information I get on that start up screen (black and white writting)...failure maybe imminent..This has been going on for a while as well...
I was hoping to get rid of the virus and clean the computer...I was also hoping for more time before a crashes...
I believe my end results options would be to buy a new C drive or possibly wiping the C drive Clean...then doing a clean install...
Like I said this is over my head; To do a repair install...
If you believe I should stop and take the computer to Vern so he can repair it please let me know...I really do not want to waste your time...and my time is limited (quite time to do this at home)...
I am up in the air at this point as what I should do next?
Thank you Repa...I wish I had more knowledge as well as time.... _________________

I was only giving you this as an option if you wanted to try it to fix the problem of not getting into safe mode after you finished verifying that your trojan is gone. You would use the Windows XP CD.
If I right click on My Computer>Manage>Event Viewer>drop down to System...I get the folllowing error properties: The devide.\Device\Harddisk0\D. has a bad block.
I remember this now, and also remember that you were unsuccessful in getting Error Checking to fix it.

Sheila, I suggest you just complete the instructions I gave you and don't worry about anything else - run ccleaner in your Owner account in Normal Mode and then rescan the computer with Avast to verify that the trojan is gone. You might also want to scan it with Spybot and AVG Anti-Spyware if you have them. When you are ready to tackle your hard drive problem, you might want to take it to your friend. I think that with all you have going on right now, you don't need the added stress brought on by trying something you are uncomfortable with. Since you could not repair the bad block using Error Checking, it really sounds like you need to either reformat your hard drive and install windows from scratch using your hp restore CDs, or replace the hard drive if that doesn't work.

Thank You Repa,
I will run CCleaner and Avast to make sure the Trojan is gone.
You are right I could not fix the bad block running error checking.
I really appreciate and thank you for your help...You do so much for us all here in the Computer Help as well as Photography...You have the heart and patience of a Saint...I hope you enjoy your grandkids this weekend...My best to Granny and you ...
I know in my heart of hearts this needed to go to my friend for repairs...I will post the results after the scans...If the Trojan is gone fine if not, that will be my Que to get this fixed...Actually it is sort of a relief...
Bless you, _________________

Repa,
This morning I did get into safe mode...You suggested;
Have you tried continually tapping the F8 key immediately after you push the F2 key to continue to see what happens?
I tried this again this morning and surprised it worked...just after I hit the F2 key I quickly hit F8 and got into safe mode.
The Administrator Account did not show CCleaner on the Start Menu>All Programs...I don't know why. I did run CCleaner it in my Owner Account...in Safe Mode...
I did learn something new today...
My next step 5. Set a new restore point.
6. Run another scan of Avast and see what I get...
I did think I was supposed to run Avast in Safe Mode? I will do it but first I will read everything to make sure I didn't miss run Avast in Safe Mode...
Enjoy your weekend ...I'm doing just fine...

My scans went fine...
I guess for the time being I'm alright...as long as F2 keeps working I'll be around...
I do have to scan the G drive (back up) but I'm feeling better I got this much done...
Thanks for all your help Repa...
If Kim calls or stops by will you send her home...I've been missing my friend...Have a nice day and weekend... _________________

You're welcome, Sheila. Hope you can get your other problem resolved without having to buy a new hard drive. If I see or hear from Kim, I'll tell her you miss her. I miss her too! She must be back in Hollywood again! Have a good weekend. _________________ Repa
