Hi.  First I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the tutorials and questions and answers.  It has helped me so much with my home computer.  I have a question about desktop icons.  My boss was messing around with her computer and now has little squares behind the names of the desktop icons.  She doesn't like them and wants me to get rid of them.  She has no idea how she did it.  She has Windows XP Professional.  I cannot seem to find out how to change them back.  Her settings are pretty much like mine.  I have changed her background to the same collor as the boxes for the time being.  Any help would be appreciated.  Sorry if this has been discussed before but I could not find the answer.

jafakf,

I am sorry, but I don't quite understand the look you are describing

could it be something like this

Mine has always been like that and I never bother to check to see if I can change it. I do have Xp.

From my screen shot... is that how it looks?

If she just did this recently, the easiest way to fix this is to just find a restore point prior to the time before that happened and restore her computer to that time. That will restore all previous settings to what they were before this happened. If it's not possible to restore to a time before this occurred, let me know and I'll give you something else to try.

Yes, Pepperpot, that is exactly what I was talking about, those little squares behind the names of the icons.  My boss does not like them.  I suggested restoring her computer to an earlier time, Repa, but she has changes made on her computer for our new accounting system that she says would be deleted if the computer is restored.   Rolling Eyes  So my only alternative is to try to correct this problem another way.  Would appreciate your assistance.

Well... what do you know... I got it... see?!! After all these years - lol Very Happy

1. Right-Click on MY COMPUTER icon (on your Desktop)

2. Choose PROPERTIES from the menu that will appear choose ADVANCE

3. In ADVANCE select PERFORMANCE SETTINGS > CUSTOM

4. In PERFORMANCE OPTIONS > VISUAL EFFECTS > check "USE DROP SHADOWS FOR ICON LABELS ON THE DESKTOP

5. Click on APPLY and that is it!

Hope this works for you

As you can see, I have my computer set to hardly any special effects. Reason being is that it's an old computer with low space.... not using special effects frees up space

Well, my next suggestion was to do what Samantha suggested above. You may have to do one other thing though, depending on what setting she has, and that is:  make certain that you do not have "Lock desktop items" enabled. If what Samantha suggested above doesn't work by itself, you can find this option by right-clicking on your desktop and select Properties in popup menu that appears. In the Display Properties window, select the "Desktop" tab and then the "Customize Desktop" button (below the list of wallpapers). A second dialogue will appear, and you will need to select the "Web" tab and uncheck "Lock desktop items." Now your icon text should be rendered with transparent backgrounds.

Hi Samantha, I checked on her computer and she already has "use drop shadows for icon labels" checked.  She also has everything else under custom checked as well.  I then tried what you suggested Repa, and "lock desktop items" was unchecked.  Did I miss something?  I can't seem to figure out what she did.  Thanks for all your help.

Why don't you uncheck everything and then restart the computer?

Then check one by one and see what happens.

What I showed above is all that was needed for me. I am sure Repa might have other suggestions though

Not really - I've researched this problem before, and the above suggestions work for some and not for others. It can be a very difficult problem to solve if the above suggestions don't work. I'll see what I can come up with, but it may not be before the weekend as we are in Alabama right now. If your boss is unwilling to restore her computer to before she introduced the problem and then go through whatever it was that she wanted to set up one step at a time so she can discover what caused this in the first place, then she may have to live with it - but I'll see what I can do as I have time. We are here to help whenever possible.

Thanks Repa and Samantha.  It didn't work but I talked her into restoring her computer to before it happened.  I told her it was the only course of action to take.  She agreed and now her computer is back the way it was.  She didn't have the faintest idea what she did to change it that way.  Anyway, thatnk you so much for all your help.  I'm sorry you had to spend all that time searching for an answer but it was very much appreciated.  Enjoy your time in Alabama.  It's beautiful down there.  Had relatives that lived near Talladega and always enough going to the race.
Thanks again!   Very Happy

Sorry we couldn't pin-point the problem, it is hard to know if a person does not keep track on their computer movements.

So what races are you guys talking about... horses or dogs?

jafakf... you must stop by when you can and teach us more about your corner of the world... I would love to learn about it!! Very Happy

Car racing, Sam. I go by theTalladega racetrack off interstate 20 everytime we visit our grandchildren in Pelham. Racing is a big event here in the South! People come from everywhere to attend!

Sorry, I forgot to say it was the Nascar race at Talladega.  Always a lot of fun.  Used to go there all the time.  Have you been to the Museum, Repa?  Seeing Michael Waltrip's wrecked Bristol car makes you realize how lucky he was.  The car is completely cut off right under his seat.  It's a wonder he didn't lose his legs.

I'm from the Midwest, Samantha.  Indiana to be exact.  Nothing exciting here but I love it.  Have lived in the big city (St Louis) but prefer the small town life.  Thanks for asking.  Where are you both from?

I'm from King, NC, jafakf. It's about 10 miles north of Winston Salem just off US 52. A small, quiet town in the middle of a farming community - mostly tobacco and soybeans. No, I haven't been to the museum, and not a big race fan, so haven't been to the races either, but I bet they are fun. I've heard about the tailgate parties there before the races. I did go to the stock car races in Winston Salem at Bowman Gray Stadium (1/4 mile track) when I was a teenager back in the 1950s and enjoyed them.
