I had did a complte re-do of my moms lap-top when I turned it back over to her(I had allot of stuff on there she wasn't goping to need, and i thought it would be faster just to do a restore then to uninstall everything, and defrag, etc...but anyhow...I got it installed everything was fine, I did an update(doing those update things) and now I can't play on it, it says I need to activate my vista...I did!!!! a billion times. I'm using the serial on the bottom of the pc...I do have net access as of right now as I somehow got it to connect. BUT...everytime i try to activate it says the serial is wrong or what ever. I tried over 10 times to enter it. And 5 times to enter the disk serial(the one i'm using now on my computer) and it keeps saying they are not valid or what ever...I have no idea what to do now. I could use the phone system, but will thatbe a waite of time? Will they then try to say I have an illgal copy? I dont!!1 I paid money for the disk from best buy over a year ago. And the lap-top has the vista sticker on the bottom so i know it's valid(I got the disk when i bought the laptop at the same time, and same place, except the disk was for my pc)
Thanks for the help!!! _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

I believe that the Windows Vista product id number used at the time of the EOM installation is what is needed in order to activate the computer, not the product id number on the Windows CD for your computer. If you reinstalled windows (or effectively did an update in place) using your Windows CD for your other computer and entered that product id number, that may be your problem, because activation pairs the original EOM Windows product key with information about your computer hardware. Here -
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/57cc0e65-f70c-49fd-bdaa-6da83d6a35af1033.mspx
it tells you how to troubleshoot Windows Vista activation problems.
If you still cannot get your system to activate, I suggest you call Microsoft and tell them exactly what you did - they will tell you why you can't activate and what you have to do. I have a feeling, though, that your problem is using the wrong (even though valid) product id number when you used your Windows Vista CD for your other computer on the laptop. You may have to use the restore disks that came with your laptop in order to fix this problem. _________________ Repa

The laptop didn't come with a disk I don't think...just a box, a charger thing, and the laptop... _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

I've found that you can use any Windows Vista CD (same Vista version as what was on the laptop) to reinstall windows on the laptop, but it will fail activation for the reasons I gave you before. Call the phone number on the screen that told you activation failed and a Microsoft operator will activate it for you.You must tell her (him) the legal product key off the tower or computer case. This person will then read you sets of numbers and activate it for you if it is a legal operating system still on the original hard drive _________________ Repa

OK, I'll do this within this week...yes it's legal lol...unlike my old XP ...thats the main reason why we got the disk was my XP wasn't legal. It was my uncles number from an old pc of his he wasn't using. Toll free does mean that it wont costm e right? Also, how longwill it take? is she going to ask me a billion questions as I'm an idiot and will prob talk my self into a hole...what all will she ask me, etc. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

It doesn't take long, a few minutes at most - you'll probably wait longer to speak to someone than it will take to get it done. Toll free means it won't cost you anything. Just tell the person that you had to reinstall windows, and it won't activate. Give the person the product id number off your laptop case, and they will do the rest or tell you what to do. If they ask you what you did to reinstall windows, tell them what you did. _________________ Repa

ok, IT'S ACTIVATED. I don't know how I did it, but I didn't have to call them. I plugged in my net cable, and hit that thing for internet access, then I cliked activate or what ever, then it activated. I did that before, but O well, it's now activated ,,,thanks. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |
