Sheila's post in another thread has brought up some interesting questions

Thank you wwe. I know they just bought a new computer and I believe it is Vista. I was not sure by looking at the link which link to tell her to download. She has lots of pictures and I told her she should get a good editor...I'm lost as far as Gimp and what to tell her to download.
So before I send her a link I thought asking here first would be the best thing to do.
I also suggested that she join the board because of the photography forum. Her passion is taking pictures and she puts a lot of glitter on them from an online site but she doesn't have an editor for working on photos.
I'm assuming she is waiting for me to send her the link or a link for a good editor. There must be some kind of editor besides Gimp? If so please let me know and I'll send her them and let her decide..
Have a nice day... |
I am sure many of us all need to use one, after all we have camera's and stack of photos old and new. But you don't want to spend loads of money, and frankly speaking why should you?... There are good free programs out there! But which one is suitable for your needs, you may ask?!
Gimp has long been consider the best out there for those who can't afford really expensive graphics packages such as Photoshop and CorelDRAW but with Vista dominating the market at the moment it seems that there are some glitches between these two. Apparently it hangs when it is querying Fonts, but there is no need to worry as the fonts will be cached in the next time you open your Gimp.
Here's a helpful link for those with this problem

At the link below you can find a comparison of raster graphics editors sorted by availability, between Commercial software and Free or Open Source software. You will also find basic general information about the editors (creator/company, license/price etc.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_raster_graphics_editors
Each one of us here has used one or two (maybe more ) programs listed in the chart. Why not give your opinion on the programs you have each used. The pros & cons _________________

Thanks so much Samantha for those links...I know she will appreciate me sending them...
I see Faststone Image Viewer which i had before and liked it quite a lot.
I did have Microsoft Digital Image but since I've been learning Photoshop I've decided to stay with it. I figure maybe someday I may have the time to master it.
I thank you very much for your help... _________________

You are welcome Sheila.
That link should help your friend find something for her needs. But remember if she downloads anything from the net - always download in a folder and scan with all the scanners installed in the computer before installing the program.
I have used:
Microsoft Digital Image (formerly Microsoft Picture It!) - it came it my Xp Home Edition... it's ok to do small jobs on photos, as in sharpening, color correction, red eye, scratches in old photos - it's easy to use and understand, but I find it hard resizing - the dimensions I give comes out different in print & in pixels.
Corel Draw 7 - I couldn't understand heads or tails of it, even took an oline class and still couldn't understand it
Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Photoshop version 9) - as you all know I couldn't understand it either at first, but some features are intuitive to use - I took two online classes because there is so much in there to learn and I wanted to know what each feature does and now I simply love it and I am hooked! - I have notice that if I put it down for awhile I forget things - _________________

LOL, yea I tend to forget stuff...Photoshop is to definitive if that's the right now. So like you can do something time and time again, and it will never look the same. I love it. I tend to do allot of the same stuff just alter colors, and add in something new each time. I started learning the pen tool, but just not my thing. I have no need for it, so I don't sweat it. I guess if I needed it. I could use it after a few min of playing with it. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |
