· Quote

Here it is Repa.

Recently, when we log off our accounts, instead of logging off immediately, this small window pops up.

It says:  End Program- NVIDIA Twin
This program is not responding.  To return to Windows and check the status of the program, click Cancel.

If you choose to end the program immediately you will lose any unsaved data.    To End Program Now, Click End Now.

When logging off our respective desk tops, this notice pops up regularly, if not each time we log off.    We've gotten this, maybe a couple of weeks now, not sure of time frame.   Thinking back, I believe we got it intermittingly, even before the last 2 weeks.   The first time or two that I saw it, I would Click Cancel, but, instead of it returning to Windows, as it says, it would just cycle over & over again, as if trying to end program, using a progress bar.    After that, I would just automatically click End Program, and that would make it log off the Desktop at that time, and return to the Welcome page, where the Accounts are shown.

Today, though, when I clicked End Program, it acted as if it was going to log off.  But, instead, after all the icons were gone off the desktop, and just the Wallpaper picture(I guess is what it is called) was all that was showing, and the computer froze.   All I knew to do was hold the On/Off button on the Tower in until it turned off.   I turned it back on, after a few minutes, and here I am now relating the experience to you.

Got any ideas on the Cause, and Fix?

This is for your Nvidia graphics [ video ] card as it supports 2 monitors, or perhaps a dual view on a wide monitor. Have you done anything before this started to add a monitor so you could display on 2 monitors at once, or set up dualview mode because you have a wide screen? If so, you may have to undo it to stop the problem.

There are 3 things you can try. Test each one in sequence, and then proceed to the next step if it doesn't fix your problem:

1. Right click on your desktop and click properties, then click settings tab at the top, click advanced button at the bottom, click on the Nvidia or GeForce tab at top, if you have one of the latest detonator drivers installed it should open a quick access panel on the left of that window, click "nView Display Mode", under nView modes in the middle of the window you should select "Single Display."

Note: depending on which version of NVIDIA GeForce you have, the directions above could vary. What you want to find is where the Display Mode for multiple monitors is, and ensure that you don't have dualview mode selected for a widescreen monitor, or dual monitors for more than one monitor. If you cannot find where these settings are, or can't make a change, proceed to the next step.

2. Click on start, then Run, type in msconfig in the text box and click ok. click on Startup tab. Untick everything in the list that relates to Nvidia. Items that you may see that can be turned off are: NVMCTRAY, nwiz, NvCpl. Apply the changes, click ok and reboot the computer. After you reboot, you'll get a dialog box saying you've used the System Configuration Utility. Just mark the box that says, "don't bother me with this again".
Check to see if this fixes your problem. If not, do step 3 below.

3. Click on Start, then Run, then type in services.msc in the text box and click ok. Scroll down the page that appears until you find NVIDIA Display Driver Service and double-click on it. Set the Startup Type to manual and set the Service Status to Stopped. Reboot and check to see if this fixes your problem.

Let me know if one or more of the above fixes your problem.

Repa, Let me add this info.   After getting my computer shut down yesterday, with the On/Off button, and then turning it back on, I remembered something.

That End Program window did not appear every time the computer was shut down, since it first began appearing.    I remember this after getting it back on Sat. 9/20/08.   After getting it back on, it didn't appear for the next 4-5 times we logged off.   So, to answer your question it appears randomly.

I'll reply again when I can try your fixes.

Tried #1.  Nothing you mentioned was listed on my menu.

#2.   No boxes relating to NVIDIA  were checked.

#3.   All I had listed was "NVIDIA Driver Helper".    Since it was all that pertained to NVIDIA I changed it to Manual, but, it would not allow me to set Service Status to Stopped.

So, nothing helped.    The End Program- NVIDIA Twin window has not appeared in a few days.

Anything else to try?

Well, very odd that you see none of the things I mentioned. That makes no sense! However, the NVIDIA Driver Helper has been known to cause EXTREME shutdown delays with this service active, but has no adverse side effect with it disabled unless you override your refresh rate. Set a new restore point just in case you mess something up, be sure you are in an administrator account (even go into Safe Mode if necessary) and see if you can stop the service and then set it to disabled. If you still can't change the Service Status to Stopped, don't worry about it if you can change the Startup Type to Disabled. Reboot and check to see that all is working ok. Let me know if this works.
