|
|
I just got back from my neighbors trying to help him with a problem.
He had ZoneAlarm and some version of Norton Antivirus. He ended up having to contact Norton to get Norton Antivirus 2009 installed. The support guy told him he would have to uninstall ZoneAlarm. He then got NA Antiviurs installed. My neighbor then tried to re-install ZoneAlarm - it locked up on the configuration and he had to turn off the computer. After that it would lock up on the Welcome screen when he tried to reboot. That is when he called me.
I went over and we tried re-booting again. It locked up - none of the keys would work - ctrl-alt-deleted would not work. I had him turn it off again - and reboot again. I was able to get it to boot into Safe boot and I uninstalled ZoneAlarm. After that it was able to reboot normally.
We did some google searches and found where a number of people had the same problem and confirmed there was an incompatibility between NA Antivirus 2009 and ZoneAlarm.
NA Antivirus 2009 says it has Internet Worm Protection and Intrusion Prevention.
NA Internet Security says it has those 2 things but also says it has a firewall.
So, after all that, the question of does the Interent Worm Protection and Intrusion Prevention of NA Antivirus 2009 take the place of a firewall or does he still need a firewall? (One of the articles we found in the google search asked this question, but it was not answered.)

No, it does not. Of course, Windows has its own software firewall, so be sure that is enabled since you uninstalled ZoneAlarm. You did have Windows Firewall turned off when ZoneAlarm was installed, didn't you?
What I recommend and feel is absolutely necessary is an external firewall, like one found with a Linksys router. With that, the Windows Firewall should be sufficient. On any system, one should have a good anti-virus (I consider Norton to be a total resource hog and would never use it), a software firewall, a hardware firewall (router), and a good anti-spyware scanner with resident guard. Recommendations for what to use can be found in Sticky # 3 in the Tutorials forum. If your friend wants an alternative to Windows Firewall, he could try Comodo, which is free, and by all accounts, very good. I don't know if there will be compatibility issues with Norton, he'll just have to try it. But don't be lulled into thinking that a hardware firewall isn't needed if you install a ZoneAlarm or a Comodo. Be sure that Windows Firewall is disabled If he decides to install Comodo. You don't want 2 software firewalls running at the same time, as they will conflict with one another. _________________ Repa

Repa,
Yes, Windows Firewall was turned off.
This is not the first time he has had trouble with NA. He had trouble the last time he installed a new veresion of NA. I have told him that I use AVAST. But I don't feel confident enough to tell him he should change.
I myself have a router and just use Windows FIrewall, maybe some time I 'll change to one of the others. He does not have a router. I have mentioned a router to him before but have not really told him he needs to get one.
Thanks for your information, I'll pass along the information to him.
I am kind of curious as to what the Internet Worm Protection, Internet Intrusuion prevetnion actually do. Does he need to turn off either of those options when he installs the firewall?
Thanks,
Fay |

Usually there are installation instructions with firewall software that will address whether or not that is necessary. However, it never hurts to disconnect from the internet and turn off all scanners when installing any software after the software download has been scanned by an anti-virus scanner and an anti-Spyware scanner.
Sounds like the Internet Worm Protection / Intrusion Prevention are a bit like a couple of the active protections provided by Avast (look at the On-Access Protection Control Screen of Avast), only I think Avast provides more and better protection, and is very much less of a strain on system resources. Personally, I think he ought to take the loss on Norton and install Avast, but that is just my opinion.
You should definitely encourage him to get a router - I would never be without one! I cannot emphasize this enough!!! With a router installed, Windows Firewall is sufficient. The only con is that Windows Firewall doesn't block things from getting out of your computer that you don't want going out, but if everyone were to follow installing the software protections recommended in Sticky #3 in the Tutorials forum and this sticky in the Computer Security forum,
http://www.freepowerboards.com/geeksmore/geeksmore-about1398.html?highlight=hosts+file
the need for a more sophisticated software firewall other than Windows Firewall is much less than otherwise, because the chance of anything bad getting on your system in the first place is significantly diminished. _________________ Repa

This morning I called him to tell him what you said. At that time, he was on a live chat with Norton - upgrading to Norton Internet Secuirty which has a firewall. So guess he has made the decision to stick with Norton. Maybe he will reconsider next year when he has to re-new again.
Thanks for the information.

Well, he might be fine as NIS 2009 does get very good reviews, except for the "free" technical support which appears to be lacking and drives people to the "paid" support. You can do as well or better with the right freeware, but, to each his own. _________________ Repa
