I need some help. please. I hope that I can explain this correctly.
When I make a change to a certain website in Dreamweaver, the change doesn't show up in IE or Firefox. Usually, whenever I make a change to any website in Dreamweaver, it shows as changed in IE, but this one won't. I have made changes to this same site before with no problems. I tried making changes to other websites that I can connect to, and there are no problems with the changes showing up in IE.
I don't know if I explained it correctly or not. I explained it to Fay, and she didn't see the changes either in IE, so it's not the cache. I'll use Fay's emoticon to show how I feel.
Did I explain it so that it's understandable?
Thanks in advance for the help! _________________

Ruth, after uploading the change from your computer to the website in Dreamweaver, did you go to the Remote Site side of the Dreamweaver window, double-click on the file(s) that was supposed to have been changed to see if the changes were actually there in the edit mode? If the changes aren't in the file, then the upload ftp is somehow failing.
If you haven't done this, check the file(s) on the remote side for the changes you uploaded. If they aren't there, try uploading them again, and watch the bottom of the Site window carefully to see that the file being uploaded completes as it should. Then, hit the refresh button and open the "updated' file on the Remote Site side and check it in the edit mode to see whether the changes are there, and that the entire page matches exactly what you have for that file on the Local Folder side. If not, something is amiss - perhaps a security setting is preventing the upload ftp from taking place in dreamweaver. Don't know, that's why you need to pay attention during the upload to see how the process actually proceeds and ends.
If you can't get Dreamweaver to work, see if you can accomplish the update doing a direct ftp to the Remote Site using IE and then when you get into the site (you'll be prompted for the correct userid and password before you get there), you'll be in Windows Explorer. Select View > Explorer Bar > Folders to get to the folders view of Windows Explorer with your local machine and the remote site in the left-hand column. Expand both your local machine folders and the remote site folders so that the folders containing the file of interest are visible in the left pane. Find the folder that contains the file you are changing on your local machine, and click on it to put the files in that folder in the right-hand pane of Windows Explorer. Locate the file you changed, and while holding down the Ctrl key, drag the file over and drop it into the correct folder in the remote site in the left-hand column. This will copy that file from your local machine to the remote site. Then, click on that folder to get the files in that folder into the right pane and open the file on the remote site to see if your changes are there.
Let me know what happens with both of the above if Dreamweaver still doesn't work. _________________ Repa

Thanks Repa!! I didn't even think of going to the Remote view! That worked! I switched to that view and got (don't know if it was the actual page from the website or not) a couple of pages that I wanted to make changes to. I made some of the changes and"put" it back on the Internet. The changes that I made are showing on IE after I refresh! From now on, for this one site anyway, should I do the same thing in Remote view when making changes?
I don't know how to make changes using ftp with IE. How do you do that?
Thanks so much for your help!! _________________

Ruth, as far as I know (I have Dreamweaver 4), after you have made your changes in your Local Folder, you need to have the website you are making the changes to connected (using the "Connects to remote host" icon) and showing in the Remote Site view, such that both the Remote Site and your Local Folder are showing. Then, you highlight the Folder(s)/File(s) changed in the Local Folder and select the Put Files icon to upload the changes to your website. After the upload is complete, hit the refresh button. Check the file(s) on the Remote Site view to see that the changes are actually there, and after that go to your website in a separate IE browser and check the page(s) you changed to make sure the changes took.
You can make changes in your Local Folder and then copy them to your remote site in Windows Explorer using ftp to get you to the remote site in a Windows Explorer view. All you do is create the ftp address to your website and put it in the address bar of your IE browser. It will look something like this:
ftp://www.yourwebsite.com,
or
ftp://ftp.yourwebsite.com
The correct format will be the same as that which is defined in Dreamweaver at Site > Define Sites > Edit > Remote Info. The text box to the right of FTP Host: is the correct format to use after the ftp:// shown above.
A login screen will appear in which you will have to supply the correct userid and password to access the site (also specified in the Define Sites table on the Remote Info page, although the password cannot be read, you'll have to know what it is). The next thing you will see will be Windows Explorer. From the menu bar, select View > Explorer Bar > Folders. Two panes will appear with your Local Computer and the Remote Site all located in the narrow left column. At this point, follow the instructions I gave you in my previous post. _________________ Repa
