While this is far from new, as tech stuff goes, I can't remember how I got along without it before. I have an appointment calender with alarm, datebook, address book, calculator, spreadsheets, write-on note pad, several games, and a slide show of the grandkids all in one device that fits in my breast pocket. All of it can be edited and backed up from my computer and there are many apps that I haven't even got around to trying yet. It uses SD memory and many e-books and apps are available pre-loaded on these cards. With a 128mg card in the slot, I am carrying more computing power in my hand than that of the first lunar module. It also has infrared "beaming" capabilities so that I can privately communicate with others who have a similar device. There are wireless add ons, as well as a fold up keyboard available also. This is where the future of computing is going. I now see that there are similar devices with bluetooth and cellular capabilities. One of my "must do" projects involves loading a "mini Linux" OS onto one of the memory cards to see if it will run on the device.

Keith,
a Palm Pilot is one of the gadgets I'm looking at - looking and looking - and can't quite make up my mind if I would use it. Also, I'm not sure if I should get a Palm Pilot or the comparable  gadget from HP or whatever else is out there. Does the Palm Pilot come with wi-fi?
It looks like you get lots of use out of yours.

I have had the Palm M500 for about 3 yrs now and have been so happy with it that I haven't kept up with the newest stuff out there. I won mine in an online contest at a tech site, so I don't really even know what they cost. A friend of mine, who is a IT admin for one of the local TV stations, bought a HP and he claims that it is great. I know he has WIFI and I think it has cellular capabilities as well. He somehow uses Earthlink with it, so you might check into that as well. I haven't really been interested in internet access on that small of an appliance as my eyesight won't allow me to utilize it. I prefer the 15 in laptop for that if I am away from my desktop.

Thanks, Keith. I am sure one day I will know what I want Laughing
I always figured, being they are so small, they might not be very useful. It is nice to know that they are handy, and manageable.

The next time you are in the market for a cell phone you might check out the upscale models that include many of the features that were exclusive to the Palm like appliances before. If you don't need the spreadsheet and e-book capability you can now get about everything else in a phone.

I don't need the spreadsheet, but the e-book thing sounds really nice. Do you need a magnifying glass to read with, or can you make the print bigger? I'm having the same problems you do: arms too short, or glasses too weak.

The text size is adjustable in preferences and the books will scroll each page and give you a button to change pages. I have the "Left behind" series on memory cards that I intend to read some day. It allows me to pack lighter and still have reading material. I do have to get a holder for those little SD cards tho, as they are quite small and easy to misplace.

There are several sites where you can download free e-books, many of them classics:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
This last site even show a picture of a hand held reader,

Rike - getting pretty convinced!

Keith and Rike,

I want something to use at the library.  Would a palm pilot work at that? I do genealogy and am starting to access data other than my computer/internet. I want something that will take anything I throw at it. I am debating the laptop. Price and usage count alot in this decision.

For a lot of text input I would advise the laptop. I still haven't picked up the keyboard for my palm pilot and usually use the notepad stylus input. It is a little sloppy and takes a lot of page space, but my notes are short. Keyboard type text input is more difficult and requires the use of a "shorthand" type language that takes some time to learn. My main use for the Palm is it's address book. Each of my customers may have up to 10 contacts and they each have at least 2 numbers. All of these are searchable by company, name, location etc. Most of this is uploaded from my computer where I have the luxury of the keyboard and large screen for organization.

Thank you Keith for the input. It will be a while before I get the laptop.

Hopefully we will be moving soon so money is tight until all is settled. However, I do want to get the laptop so I can hit the library and Vital Records (Birth-Death etc.). Thank you.

You will find that the library records that date back very far will be in a tranparency format. You could do well with a digital camera that has the ability to focus close up. This would allow you to capture any finds of interest for later review. Be sure to check out the library's web site as well. Many local volunteers are converting such records to digital formats every day. Volunteering with such a group will put you into contact with many that have similar interests and will put your technical abilities to good use.

Thanks KEith.

I thought of that but with my health problems I need to be careful about scheduling anything.  Also, I will be moving to another county soon. About the digital camera, that is a good idea. Thanks.
