This short article details why I think this board is important, besides the comradeship. Please don't think that I intended it for anyone here in particular, just take what it says as a learning opportunity.

Keith and Rike

This board made a lot of difference for me. After reading that article I am glad to know I was never that bad. I got my first computer back in the late '70s, only because I worked for Harris and learned a lot from the Customer Support guys.

I am sure this board will make a lot of difference bacause the people here care a lot about anyone who has a problem, not just the members.

It's important to be aware of how our actions effect everyone. As we move into a global viewpoint this becomes even more critical.  The internet is a finite medium that is reaching critical mass rapidly. I would not want to be the one who blocks a child's educational opportunities in favor of forwarding a joke that all of my friends have probably received already, or the 1000's of spam letters that can be sent from my computer without my knowledge if I don't take the necessary precautions.

A lot of the confusion on the web can be solved with new standards for websites, but that only solves the address issues, not the bandwidth crisis and the cost of hosting and conveying so much pure junk. We can become responsible users of the web, just as we turn down our thermostats and insulate our homes to conserve energy. The answer is, just as it is for most things, education.

Unfortunately, there are people who will never learn, because they do not realize that their missiles "to forward this nice poem (or joke or what ever it might be) to all your friends" is just as much spam as any other unsolicited e-mail. Sometimes I feel guilty because I set my mail filter to move all such mail straight to the junk folder, so I don't get a chance to let those people know how to be a responsible internet user. But it was just getting too much: as soon as I would ask one person not to flood the world with unnecessary e-mail, five more would pop up. I think the only way to stop that would be to charge for e-mail, and one day it will probably come to that.

A nice and informative article Keith...It took me a while to read it. I agree so much has changed in the computer world since the early days. I've taken so many classes on computer safety and still want to learn more.

Ok...everyone when you do forward an email please use the bcc line. In todays computers it has to help some what. That article got me thinking...

Have a nice day everyone,

When I first began using computers again after a long hiatus, I was fascinated with the advancements in e-mail and soon got myself on every "buddy list" of the people I knew. The jokes were funny and the pictures were cute, or interesting. (Did you know that the easternmost and westernmost points of the US are both in Alaska?)

Once, when questioning my son about receiving a particular funny joke, I was told that he didn't get my mail any longer since he had blocked it. I was mad, to say the least, until he explained his position. He received mail from over 25 team members and about 10 bosses, plus a large variety of tech journals. He used his mail mostly at work and the mail that I sent him had to be put aside for more private viewing because he didn't know the content and how objectionable it might be to those around him. One person's side splitter is another's lawsuit. After amassing over 100 of these unread he knew he would never catch up on them and they stopped being enjoyable.  Since my pattern was to call his cell if I had anything important to say he assumed that he could safely block my mailings.

Since then I have found that he wasn't alone in his desire to see the spam come to an end. This has been more than a few years ago, and I still get at least 3 per day in my inbox after requesting that the senders cease sending jokes and pictures of kittens. I can only assume that the senders do not know how to remove me from their mail list, and this is the one class of internet user that I am least interested in receiving mail from. My time is not as valuable as my son's is, so I manually delete them, and occasionally look at some with "very" interesting content, but I no longer desire to spam my friends and relatives with every piece of junk mail that lands in my inbox.

If I had this board to refer to back then, I might have prevented the embarrassment of being told that my humor wasn't welcomed. It wasn't that there was anything particularly offensive or disgusting about them, ( I have some taste ) just that the sheer numbers were unmanageable, and the risk of infection from so many sources was so high.

My kids and others no longer dread, or block, my mailings because they can depend upon each being suitable to the recipient, ( I no longer have any "lists" ) and totally safe to view, even the attachments. I have a cousin and an ex co-worker who occasionally like a good joke or story, and another cousin who will accept all of the recipes that I wish to send. My daughters love family pictures and my son loves science facts. Each now gets selected mailings that they will look forward to opening.
