· Quote

Steps to help avoid Viruses, Spyware, and other Malware:

    1. Use an internal computer Internet firewall (Note: Windows XP with SP2 has a firewall already built-in and turned on by default) and install an external router/firewall (e.g., Linksys) if your ISP's modem does not come with a router/firewall built-in. Read Sticky # 3 in the Tutorials forum for suggested internal firewall applications and external router/firewalls. You need both!
    2. Visit Microsoft Update and Office Update at least once per month and update your system. Turn on automatic updating if you can't remember to do this yourself.
    3. Subscribe to industry standard antivirus software and keep it current. Read Stickies # 3 & 4 in the Tutorials forum for suggested applications and routine maintenance procedures. The applications we suggest are FREE!
    4. Never open an e-mail from someone you don't know.
    5. Avoid opening an e-mail attachment from someone you know, unless you know exactly what the attachment is. The sender may be unaware that it contains a virus. If you don't know whether to trust the sender to know that the attachment is virus free, don't open it.
    6. Instead of downloading email onto your computer with Outlook or Outlook Express, open and read your email at your ISP's email web page only from people you know, or use an email service like gmail or hotmail.
    7. Although spyware programs are different from viruses, some can behave like viruses and pose similar and other risks. Read Sticky # 3 in the tutorials forum to learn more about what applications are effective in preventing spyware and other malware from being loaded on your computer, and install them on your computer. Most of them are FREE!
    8. While surfing the Internet, avoid having applications downloaded and installed on your computer without your knowledge by surfing in a Limited User account, or install "DropMyRights" if you want to surf in an Administrator or "Owner" account. You can read about DropMyRights and how to install it in Sticky #12 in the Tutorials forum. DropMyRights is FREE!
