Repa,
Please explain to me how I will be able to use my laptop after connecting the new router while doing the desktop recovery???
I have never used a router and I have printed all the info you and Ted posted way back for me to do the recovery but won't the destructive recovery remove me adding the router??? |
Connecting your router to use your laptop has nothing to do with your desktop recovery. Each computer is individually set up to connect to the router; the laptop via wireless, and the desktop via ethernet connection (note: you can do the desktop wireless too, if you have a wireless ethernet card in it; however, I recommend you use the ethernet connection for the desktop - it is much more straight forward to set up, and you don't have to worry about a "secure" connection like you do with wireless).
Doing a recovery on the desktop does not affect the laptop connection to the router, but you don't need to connect the desktop to the router at all until the recovery is completed and your anti-virus program is installed and ready for you to go out to get the latest virus updates. So, go ahead and connect your router to your modem and use it with your laptop until you do your desktop recovery. Then, connect your desktop to the router via the ethernet cable and establish your internet connection for your desktop.
You will probably need to call Linksys and get help with installing and setting your router up with your laptop for the wireless connection. They are very good at doing this, and will guide you through it over the phone step-by-step. If, when you are ready to connect your desktop and you have any problems with it, call them again and they will help with the ethernet connection. _________________ Repa

Thank you Repa
I didn't understand it. We had talked before about installing Zone Alarm and AVG on my laptop which has Vista and then someone posted that I didn't need Zone Alarm on the laptop because the security was good enough for the laptop. I can't remember if it was you or Ted, I'm sorry. BUT, I still need to install AVG on my laptop don't I??? I don't know anything about Vista as I have not even opened the laptop yet. My brother said it prompts you to allow every single thing. Can you tell me what to expect and once I install the disc I made with AVG on it, what do I do to allow it to install on Vista???
I hope this makes sense. I don't know what to ask as I have never used a laptop. I want to get it working so I can post regularly and then I can take my time on the desktop recovery and if I have trouble and need help I will have access to ask questions from my laptop. I have missed posting but I just can't sit here to enjoy my pc right now. The laptop will be nice because I can sit and get my legs elevated while using it.
Thanks Repa for always helping me.
God bless you and all our buddies on the forum. _________________

Your laptop should come with antivirus software already installed (probably Norton or McAfee) and ready to go. You'll need to immediately update whatever anti-virus software you have on the laptop when you connect to the internet. All you need to do is start it up and connect to the internet.
You can think about installing AVG later. If you decide to install AVG, you will need to download the latest version from
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
This version is compatible with Vista. Be sure you uninstall whatever anti-virus program is on your laptop before installing AVG. _________________ Repa

Does it have windows?
Windows XP comes with a firewall so I guess Vista should be the same.
Some manufactures comes with an Anti-virus (a limit subscription) _________________

Linda, if your computer doesn't come with an anti-virus program installed with a limited subscription (Dell usually supplies one with a 3 month subscription that has to be renewed and paid for), then go ahead and download and install AVG from the link I gave you above before you go anywhere else on the internet with your new computer. _________________ Repa

Wwe,
Avast is among one of the Antivirus we recommend here. And you can get it directly from the site.
I would like you to go over Sticky#3 "How did I get infected and what can I do to prevent it" - computer help - tutorials.
Follow the instruction's to help protect yourself further... if you have questions we will glad to help out.
Note of caution: Sometimes these freeware sites comes with viruses as well. Make sure you have done a thorough research on the site. _________________

Site advisor gives that site (freewarefiles.com) a Yellow warning: "In our tests, we found a small fraction of downloads on this site that some people consider adware or other unwanted programs." Perhaps you won't download one of the few that do contain malware, but you have no way of knowing until it happens. Just one or 2 infected files there can affect 100s of thousands of unsuspecting users. I would advise that no one visit this site. Stick with the known and trusted publishers of freeware that we recommend. _________________ Repa

As a matter of Information for all users: Most Manufacturers are paid by the Software Companies to load Antivirus and firewall and all that other stuff on your computer. A lot of the stuff they load is trial issue, which you have to update and pay for yourself.
When I bought My laptop just recently, I got a clean free laptop. I then hooked it up and put my own files and software on it. I loaded Office and Antivirus and my own free firewall. Stuff, I wouldn't have to keep paying for every year.
And you can do the same. Just tell the manufacturer that you don't want all that junk on your computer. If they refuse, find another maker. _________________ Ted /prophotoimages

My laptop has Vista and it came with a free 3 month trial of Norton. I immediately uninstalled Norton and installed AVG as i have always liked AVG and do not care for Norton. I also had a limited time use of Microsoft Office 2007 and I uninstalled it immediately and installed my Microsoft Office 2003. I was happy i was able to do this with Vista. My laptop is a Toshiba. We just got my husband an Acer as all he likes to do is surf the net and look on ebay. It also came with a 3 month free trial period of Norton. I uninstalled it as well and loaded AVG on his laptop for him.
I thought most pc's come with a free trial period of an antivirus program? _________________

I'm using AVG on my laptop...and avast on the other two...call this odd but the avast ones we tend to get more viruses. I guess if you look at it that could mean that there is more viruses encriped into tavast then avg. But last time my pc went down i put avast on it. and the other didnt crash but it tends to get them alot. So avg works better for me. ive used fit for along time
Theres my 2 cents...no need to follow it though. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

I've gotta give you a lot of credit Linda...I have Norton and it expires in one week...Of course it's a payed version as my computer came installed with Norton so I keep it up to date..but now want to try uninstalling it and installing what you use...See you have learned quite a bit...I'm a little scared I maynot be able to uninstall Norton...My computer is not new and it came with it from HP....So I have two choices..try and uninstall it and download the one you are using or go buy Norton this year again...I have 7 days to make up my mind...So good for you for getting that far...
I think most computers come with some sort of anti virus installed...It looks like both you and your hubbies computers came with an anti virus installed...
The Microsoft Office 2007...hummm...I really am not sure about that question...I would have thought if it's on the computer when bought it stays...See how much I know... ...In any case nice seeing you ...I'm sure the other's will be around soon to help...I do better with pictures...or images...
See...Oh Sandra one of our members made this one for me...She is quite good at this sort of thing...I like it a lot...
Ok..enough gabbing from me..for now.. _________________
