Gimp is an open source image manipulator that is often called the "poor man's photoshop". Some say it is more user friendly and prefer it over photoshop. They are probably comparing it to the version 7 which is a little geeky, even for geeks. You can get Gimp here and learn to use it as well.

I finally downloaded GIMP and love it. I am just practicing right now, but it is a great piece of software. I got the book GIMP 2 for Photographers also. Haven't had a chance to work with it because it showed up just before I left for Va.

As Novice said it: Most people compare Gimp to Photoshop and some prefer it.
It's also consider as the free alternative to the widely used Photoshop.
This is the official GIMP web site http://www.gimp.org/
It contains information about downloading, installing, using, and enhancing it. This site also serves as a distribution point for the latest releases.
So if you don't have Photoshop you can try Gimp for free _________________

Would someone point me out to which Gimp to download. A friend asked me so I would like to point her to the right one.
Thanks a lot... _________________

If she has XP, there's Gimp Shop. I have vista and it wont work on it, but Gimpshop will work on XP. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

Thank you wwe. I know they just bought a new computer and I believe it is Vista. I was not sure by looking at the link which link to tell her to download. She has lots of pictures and I told her she should get a good editor...I'm lost as far as Gimp and what to tell her to download.
So before I send her a link I thought asking here first would be the best thing to do.
I also suggested that she join the board because of the photography forum. Her passion is taking pictures and she puts a lot of glitter on them from an online site but she doesn't have an editor for working on photos.
I'm assuming she is waiting for me to send her the link or a link for a good editor. There must be some kind of editor besides Gimp? If so please let me know and I'll send her them and let her decide..
Have a nice day... _________________

Remember Julie that joined here about 4 months ago? ChainGangBaby was her user name. She did her sigs using paint.net. It looks really close to pscs3 too. Not as good, but it's easier to learn nevertheless. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

Thanks wwe...Yes I remember her. So paint.net is a free image program? I was just thinking of a program I had which someone sent to me...Faststone image Viewer...I looked through the links but can't find it here on the board.
If someone has it please let me know. I think it is a free program...
Thanks again Wwe... _________________

Yea it's free...ther's paint.net pro too...It cots. I had that one before lol...Someone I knew had the pro version and let me borrow it for a while. I didn't like it as I was so used to photoshop. I've tried several things like Gimp. Gimp Shot, Paint.net and Paint.net pro, and paint...I only can use photoshop for some reason. The other ones I can never get the hang of. _________________ if there was room for another God, and Almighty was ok with it, He would pick me because I'm just that darn good |

Sheila
Here is the site for Faststone: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
wwe,
There is no pro version of Paint.net, only one freebie version. Maybe developers version, but not pro. As they say on there site:

Jane I did want the link thanks a bunch.
I also have been looking for the link to Gimp from the other thread. I don't know if it is me or what but they make it confusing. ...
Download GIMP 2.4.7 – Installer for Windows 2000 and above. This is as far as I've gotten. I'm not going to dl it but is this right?
Thank You, _________________
