repa,
thank you for the info. I am printing this out. I hate to even say this and not sure if it's SP1 or not but my pc is running very slow. Shouldn't i wait a bit to see if this passes? I mean it is taking a long time for things to work. My sessions will be on like I have email, and the forum (craft or this one) and the green bar will sit partially full and never fills up.
I have not even been online lately and both times I have, today and the last post, it has done this which was after taking the update for SP1. I read where you said it may need to catch up with everything and I'm guessing maybe it can't unless I am using the pc? Should I just go ahead and run all my scans first to make sure nothing is found?
I don't want to set a restore point with it acting weird and so slow. Is that ok repa? |
I don't think your problem is malware. SP1 User reviews are not good, with some saying SP1 is even slower than pre-SP1. SP1 may have also undone some of the settings we went through to speed up your computer. And still, it could be your ISP. Keep your computer on for about 2 more days and see what happens. The restore point that was set by the system when you installed SP1 will take you back to pre-SP1 if things don't get better.
Samantha, if you see this, please feel free to tell us of your experience with installing Vista SP1 and whether you had any problems like Linda is experiencing. Did you have to go back and reset any settings you had pre-SP1? I'm kind of at a disadvantage here without a Vista machine to play with. _________________ Repa

My experience with Vista SP1 has been smooth so far and I did not find the need to go back to reset any thing.
I have not been following this thread so I don't know exactly what "fine tuning" has been done. But I would agree with you Repa, in that it could have "reset" something. Also my computer has 3 partitions, therefore it is configured differently to Linda's.

On the subject of updates.
Because of Linda's question I google Microsoft Silverlight (never heard of it - lol) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951213

To be honest Linda I only accept the updates that has "recommended" or "Important". Those that are "Optional" should not be a concern unless I am to use a particular application/program that requires something and then I would proceed to update.
Take for example this Silverlight - its a web browser plugin that provides support internet applications such as animation, vector graphics and audio-video playback. Silverlight competes with products such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex, Adobe Shockwave, JavaFX, and Apple QuickTime - why bother, most likely you already have most of those listed - no need to clutter the computer with more of the same _________________

Adaware found 2 MRu objects I think. One says MRu path C: etc and the other says MRu registry key, etc. I can't remember if I am to delete these since it says registry key and i do not want to mess anything up. Do I delete them???
MRU lists contain information such as the names and/or locations of the last files you have accessed. They are located in your registry. MRUs are harmless - you can either leave them or delete them, your choice.
Should I go ahead and scan with anything else since i've done these???
It isn't necessary.
I can't find the download for AVG antivirus repa. I saved the link and even went back and found your notes with the link but the page is coming up for AVG 8.0???? Does 8.0 include the antivirus and antispyware maybe and this is why it's directing me to it?? So at this point I don't have it.
I think you mean AVG Anti-Spyware, Linda. You don't need AVG Anti-virus if you are going to stay with Avast! If you can't find AVG Anti-Spyware in your My Downloads folder or wherever you put things like that, or using Search, you can still download it from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Anti-Spyware_d5287.html
or else Windows Defender will do until I can find something better.
repa, should I pull out my instruction sheet and just see if it reenabled the windows componants we disabled? I won't do anything but look at it.
That would be fine, Linda.
If your computer is still running slow by this weekend, you should restore your system to the point just before you downloaded and installed SP1 to see if it will run fast like it did before. You can always undo the restore if it doesn't help.

Hi repa
I meant to say AVG antispyware. I bet I loaded the wrong link. Sorry!
I haven't had much time on the pc so let me try to get some time on it through the weekend and if it's still running slow, I will restore it prior to installing SP1 to see what happens.
Have a HAPPY 4TH of JULY!!!!!!!!! _________________

Hi repa
Sorry I have had no time for the internet. I still have mold to clean in the basement due to the flooding. we didn't realize we had any seepage at all from the saturated grounds. It's not a lot but enough that it caused mold and we are having to move everything in the basement to clean the lower walls.
I checked and nothing that I turned off in previous instructions was changed after installing SP1. It seems to be running a little faster today so maybe it was SP1. I am going to go ahead and proceed with the last instructions you posted. I did not install AVG antispyware since I have Defender.
I will post back when I have completed the instructions. I pray everyone is doing well. Sorry I am absent all the time but it's just been overwhelming for me trying to get ready for the baby and taking Ash to all her appts and having all the classes at the hospital. I'm her partner. THEN there is all the cleaning in the basement too. I need 10 of me..lol Take care and I will get back as soon as I'm done with the instructions. thanks repa! _________________

Hi repa
Sorry I've been MIA. I still have not completed the last instructions but there has not been a lot of pc time. I have been very sick. Had more than one health issue hit me at once and other health issues with my husband and of course Ash is due Oct 21st and I'm her partner. I got sick and didn't know why and my basement is still torn apart and not finished. Just too much going on and too much to handle. Forgive my absence. I will do my best to complete my last instructions this week. Hope all is well with you and everyone else. the new look is awesome! I noticed it as soon as I logged on.
I love it! great job! Not sure who did it but it looks great! I will be back in touch as soon as possible.
God bless and take care. _________________

1. Right-Click the blue ball with the "a" in it and select "Start Avast! Antivirus" from the popup menu that appears. A small window will appear that runs a Memory and Startup test, and then eventually a larger window that says "Avast! - Simple User Interface" will appear. This window will give you links on how to use Avast.
2. You may want to spend some time reading these links - the ones that say "Select...." and "More Information." When you are ready to do the Scan, close the large window and a small window will appear on your screen that is the "Avast! Simple User Interface", although it doesn't actually say that, but if you look at your IE tab, it will say that there.
3. On the right side of the window, you will see 3 icons that, when you select one of them, will give you options for selecting the hard drives, removeable media, and folders you want to scan. Selecting the top icon on the right will default to scanning all of your local hard drives doing a thorough scan, including archives. Note: selecting the folder icon and then selecting the options My Documents and My Computer does the same thing - all hard drives will be scanned, but also removeable media as well. If you go here, you will want to deselect the removeable media (CD/DVD drives, Floppy drive, etc).
4. After you've made your selections, to start a scan click the large button on the left side of the small window. _________________ Repa

thank you repa
Looks like I need to make time somewhere so i can read this and learn to do it as I have never scanned the pc with it. I will print this and read it carefully and follow these instructions. I pray I can take some time SOON and complete the last set of instructions you gave me. It's all in my folder. I will check back with you on this as soon as I can. God bless you repa. I posted a rather long post in the general chat about having more health issues. It was to all of my friends here which most certainly includes you. I could write a book on what you've done for me repa. Please read it if you have time. _________________
